I have been ATI all the way from the first computer I bought myself at the beginning of my senior year of high school. My memory about this stuff is pretty detailed so I also include approximately what I paid at the time, which was usually high because I started buying the cards immediately upon release.

1994: 486DX2/66 w. 1MB ATI VESA VGA $?
1997: P166MMX w. 2MB ATI RAGE 64 $?
1998: P166MMX upgrade to 4MB Diamond Monster Voodoo1 $240
2000: P3 866 w. 64MB ATI RADEON 64MB VIVO (1st Radeon released) $600
2001: P4 1800 w. 64MB ATI RADEON 8500 VIVO (1st 8500) $450
2004: P4 2.66GHZ Laptop w. 64MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9200 (dedicated) $?
2004: P4 1800 upgrade to 128MB ATI RADEON 9800 Pro $Warranty Replacement of 8500
2005: P4 1800 RMA to 256MB ATI RADEON 9800 All-In-Wonder Pro $Warranty
2006: A64X24400+ w. 512MB ATI RADEON X1900XTX $640
2006: A64X24400+ add 512MB ATI RADEON X1950XTX in Crossfire mode $580
2008: A64X24400+ upgrade 2GB ATI RADEON HD4870X2 $590 (plus$60+tax lost on first buying and then selling off the single-gpu 4870)

The first Radeon was a bit of a waste because I paid through the nose and used it for less than a year. The Radeon 8500 was a fantastic value, because it was the fastest card on the market when released, and continued to do alright in most games through 2004. After almost the full three year warranty it started to lose video modes on me (bad DAC), so I got a 9800Pro as a free replacement in the last week before the warranty expired. The guys at Future Shop didn't even blink. This was pretty sweet because I was rather broke at the time and wasn't planning to upgrade any time soon. Getting the free upgrade to 9800Pro got me back into PC gaming bigtime, because now I could play Far Cry, HL2, Doom3, etc. properly. so for once Future Shop has put some good out into the world (yes I bought the extended warranty!)

I used the 9800Pro until early 2006, so the $450 I spent in October 2001 kept me gaming in decent style for four and a half years.

The X1950XTX CF Edition in late 2006 was probably a bit wasteful. I never really felt like the Crossfire scaled very well... in fact many games played better with one card for this second generation of Crossfire.

Anyone got a similar list?

Voodoo 1 thru GF2 I'm right there with ya, most of mine were Diamond as well (tho one of the GF was an ASUS, I don't remember the other). I don't remember what my 486 had, or what the P1 had originally... I think some kind of S3 card? /shrug I've upgraded a lot less frequently since then though. I've had an ATI 9500 and an ASUS 6800 OC, probably moving to an ATI 4850 soon.

It's kind of surprising the amount of carnage left in the wake of these GPUs when you look back... 3dfx, Diamond, S3, etc. Then there's companies that just went into specific niches (Quantumm, Matrox)... Had Diamond not had early success being an NV/3dfx partner the whole explosion of MP3 players might've turned out quite different!

4mb Trident chip
32mb voodoo4
Nvidia MX400
ATI 9700 pro
ATI x800pro
ATI x850xt AIW (i think)
Nvidia 7800gt (SLI)
Nvidia 8800gts 320mb

nV Geforce 4 MX 440
ATi Radeon 9000 pro
ATi Radeon 9800 pro
nV Geforce 7800GT
nV Geforce 8800GTS 640mb
nV Geforce 8800GTS 512mb
nV Geforce 9800GX2 1GB
ATi Radeon 4870 512mb

and i just sold the 4870 :p so in the market for a new one..

(sold all video cards I've had except for the X850XT and BFG 7800GTX cards, the X850XT is in a girl friend's computer to play MMOs)

Here I am, stranded in the 2005 generation of video cards again until I'm out of debt. Then I'll maybe pick up the GTX 260 rehash..

3 months after this post in Sept, I got a GTX 260. This is my 6th/current card. :D. Sometimes I run it @ 600/2200. Usually run it stock, so fast. Maybe someday I'll need more FPS, then it might get OC'd.

I was going pretty strong with upgrades on graphics cards and cpu/mobo's and then...*BAM* kids...now I stretch a system a lot further and I went with the latest "midgrade" offering this time around instead of high end, because, A) I'm a little cheaper these days, and B) the 4850 is plenty enough power for 1680*1050

Wow why so many recent cards?

My history has a nice little clusterfuck in the middle from when I went off the deepend as well. I upgraded a 9700pro to a 6800GT(long time coming it was), then got a x800XL while the 6800GT was in the shop, 7800GTX, x1900XT, 7900GT x2, x1900XT x2. You just lose control once in awhile. :) Now I still have that cross fire setup but am fixing to finally PC game again. I'm not going to buy another card after this upgrade though. No double gpu shit either I think it soured my taste on this stuff to begin with.

That doesn't even account for the weird shit I bought in that era. Like a Ti4200 with pentium cooler on it just because for $60 it was a nice piece to practice my volt modding skills on, without being TOO pathetic of a card at the time.

Cirrus Logic 2MB PCI in P-200 system
Rage Pro 8MB AGP
AIW Rage128 16MB
AIW 7500
AIW 8500
X800Pro
AIW X800XT
X1650XT PCIe
HD4670 512MB

3dfx Voodoo3 2000 16mb PCI (you could broil a steak over this card, jesus. this was my first PC upgrade other than RAM. I was about 11 years old I think.)

Creative 3D Blaster TNT2 Ultra 32mb AGP (had this thing FOREVER. Kickass performance for it's day)

Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 (Kyro II) 64mb AGP (worst card ever made.)

Gainward Geforce 4 Ti4200 128mb AGP (another great card)

Gigabyte Radeon 9600XT 256mb AGP (got it on sale soon after release)

Powercolor Radeon X800GTO 256mb PCI-E (what I'm currently running. Has a loud fan but otherwise I love it)

Sapphire Radeon HD4870 512mb PCI-E (shipping to my house via UPS at this very moment :) )

There it be... I'm glad I remembered the Kyro II, though I'd be better off forgetting it I guess.

My video card history:

Diamond Viper VLB - hand-me-down from my brother after he got himself a new computer.
S3 Virge - actually in my dad's computer, but I was on it so much that I considered it mine.
3dfx Voodoo3 2000 - another hand-me-down from my brother.
ATI Radeon 9000Pro - bought to replace the Voodoo.
ATI Radeon 9600XT - replaced the 9000Pro. Loved this card.
ATI Radeon 1600XT - this was my last-gasp attempt to keep my AGP rig going on the cheap. It wasn't cheap, though. And I got rid of my AGP rig very soon after I bought this card. Overall, a waste of money. Sold it.
ATI Radeon 1950Pro - my first PCIe card. And I loved it.
ATI Radeon HD4870 - current card.

Whatever in my old i486
nVIDIA Vanta 16mb
ATI Radeon 9700pro 128mb
ATI Radeon X1900XTX 512mb
BFG GeForce GTX 280 1G

ATI Rage Pro
3dfx Voodoo3 3500
Geforce Ti4200 (can't remember the brand)
Geforce 6800GT (again, can't remember the brand)
eVGA Geforce 8800GTS 640MB

And I will probably be getting a GTX260 in the near future.

I have very few graphic card

GeForce 2 MX200 PCI
Radeon 9600 Pro
GeForce 6800
GeForce 8600GT
GeForce 9800GTX+

They are usually big jump, except for the 8600GT, which I got merely as a replacement for my old system which the motherboard died, and took that opportunity to jump to C2D system (my cpu was even bigger of a jump, P3 > P4 > Core 2 Duo:p )

and took that opportunity to jump to C2D system (my cpu was even bigger of a jump, P3 > P4 > Core 2 Duo:p )
I also went from P4 to C2D a few months ago. :p. To be exact, 533FSB 3.06ghz P4 to E8400. :D (Before that it was just 1.7ghz P4 to 2.4ghz P4 to the 3.06).

I started late o_O;

My first card was GeForce FX 5700 that I put into my first PC, a Dell that I got for High School graduation. I met a couple great kids in college who got me into PC's and I have been obsessed with them since.

Next was a GeForce 6600gt I purchased with my first real PC build. A couple years later I picked up another 6600gt to run in SLI, and was surprised when I did not see any real FPS improvement, but damn, did it look badass.

Then I picked up a 7800gt from a friend and was amazed at tech available!

I then picked up a 8600gt and used that for a very long time and still am quite happy with that liitle guy :p

And now, I have my beautiful Sapphire HD4870 1gb card, my first ATI card, and I could not be happier! :D

Dang, I think a lot of you wish you had more girlfriends than you had video cards, lulz.

My system specs may be a bit off, sorry

Hercules 2MB ISA - Pentium 90MHz
Some 1MB PCI card that was faster than the ISA card but i ended up reverting back to the ISA card anyway because it could do 800x600 @ 16bit color i believe - Pentium 90MHz
Diamond Monster 3D (4MB Voodoo 1) coupled with the above PCI card - Pentium 200MHz
Asus Riva TNT - Celeron 300A
Orchid Righteous 12MB Voodoo 2 (2 in SLI) coupled with the TNT card - Celeron 300A
Creative 3D Blaster (Geforce 256 DDR) - P3 550 @ 825
Geforce 2 Ultra - AMD Tbird 1.2GHz
Geforce 4 Ultra - AMD Tbird 1.2GHz & P4 2.26GHz
Radeon 9800 Pro (wow, HUGE upgrade) - P4 2.26GHz
Radeon x1950xtx - P4 2.26GHz & Core 2 Duo E6600

I remember the Obsidian X-24. It was a bad mofo. It would be like todays 4870x2 or 295GTX.

3Dfx Voodoo3 3000
Geforce 2 GTS 64MB
Geforce 4 Ti4600
GeForce 5200 AGP (biggest mistake of my life)
