I know some of the users of the DC section here are aware of our somewhat low ranking in the dc vault. I don't know how much anyone cares, or even who can update our teams list on that site if we decided to add a team. However, I was thinking, it wouldn't take much to get our ranking up pretty well if that were what we wanted to do. All it would take would be actually having a team for a lot of the entries that are blank currently.

I know this would not be a move "for the science" because frankly, it would be an exercise in ego boosting and that is about all, but it would be nice to be higher. We have most of our eggs in just a couple baskets here, between WCG and FAH. Maybe we could make a team in a couple of these other projects and get a decent boost.

That's just a thought though. Opinions?

This is just me......

I've got enough to keep track of running one project. So I'm sticking with F@H, however with this same philosophy, there is nothng keeping some one from just running on another project. Some people like to run multiple projects.

The one thing that I do worrie about is that we as a team might loose our edge in what we do best. F@H and WCG. If we spread our talent to thin on a dozen or so projects things could get "sticky".

There really is only one "official" project here, and that is FAH. There are a growing number of us who also run WCG. Beyond those projects though I don't really see a big desire to get involved with other projects here. As for our DC-Vault ranking, I don't even understand how that is calculated.

There is a HardOCP team for Spinhenge, and if we could get the [H]ard|OCP team added for the GPUGRID our DC-Vault rank would jump alot.

As for our DC-Vault ranking, I don't even understand how that is calculated.

And I don't really even care :p

I've got a big enough "epeen"(at least that is what the wife tells me) I'm fine with the [H] dominating F@H.

interesting way to keep track of the entire team stats for all the projects.. but i dont think i could spare thinning out my small farm of cpu's for multiple projects..

Holy crap, big time  I had no ideer about the "DC Vault" thing.
I look at it this way : I'll probably always be enamored with Stanfords F@H project and I'll probably always use a F@H client. The main reason I went over to USCs BOINC WCG project was because, at the time, WCG CPU client was much more stable than the CPU F@H WinSMP client. I needed a windoze enviorment to run the F@H GPU2 client and the CPU WinSMP client, at that time, was very unstable. I didn't want to have to "baby sit" my boxes and it seemed I'd have to using the windoze CPU SMP client. I ran the F@H LinSMP CPU clients and I was well satisfied. ;)

Now I have switched over all my boxen to WCG so I can help our team out with the challenge thing.

I don't know what anybody else thinks and if it affects my folding, I really don't give a shite. I'm aware of the porting of GPU2 to Linux, I'm aware of the VM deal and I'm aware of other DC type programs. One, I don't want to hassle with the porting crap or the hardware requirements for the VMWare shite and two, if I coulkd keep all my eggs in the F@H basket I probably would. :D I'm not implying in any shape or form that other DC projects are less valuable. I just go along with the old sayin' "united we stand (like one DC project), divided we fall (spread too thin trying to do too many DC projects)

Thanks to all for DCing :p

Folding and WCGing for the CURE

I agree with jws2346 ...."united we stand (like one DC project), divided we fall (spread too thin trying to do too many DC projects)" I'll keep on folding as long as I can.

I agree with all that but as in my case I built up points in other DC project from years back before I even knew about FAH or WCG. I just wish that all my efforts past, present and future could be for accounted for on the HardOCP team stats.
I currently only contribute to FAH and WCG and once in awhile when things get to hot in my basement I let a few GPUGRID unit off the chain to let my room cool down so I can return my video cards back to FAH.
I think we should be supportive in whatever DCing projects people want to be envolved in, and we should try to support there efforts for the team in what ever way we can.
It's OK to have your own preference of DC project and I think it should be OK for everyone to be able to choose what is right for them.

There are a few who occasionally look at the DC Vault stats like myself, Alan and possibly others. I'm actually a bit disappointed that we don't have a more respectable standing than our current position suggests, which is not even in the top 100. A deplorable standing if you ask me. :(

Having said that, I can't estimate to what degree our involvement in one or two additional projects will affect our DC Vault position. Maybe it will bump us into the top 100, I honestly don't know. Part of the problem lies with this team's history and how we have had only official participation in no more than two projects at a time (one at present).

Although the lack of official support has never been an absolute impediment to involvement, it has limited this team's exploratory efforts in 'alternative' projects for whatever rationale of the time was not viewed as viable (ex. SETI). Traditionally, [H] team members frowned upon projects that had little potential benefit for humanity. This has also been my own position in regards to personal DC involvement.

All of this does not imply we don't possess the necessary resources to tackle many other projects if that became an objective. Indeed, if ARS can maintain the #1 spot for near a decade, we can certainly do better than we have done to date. I remember reading on ARS' forum when they had lost the #1 position to us in F@H, the consensus of their multiple team leaders was far better to drop in F@H than sacrifice their overall standing. Different team, different philosophy.

There used to be a button in the top corner that gave you a form to fill in the blanks on it. Its gone now. We also have a team in SIMAP, but he wouldn't add with only one user on the team. Quick summary, I don't know how to add to our team page now. I've also tried to get GPUGRID/PS3GRID tracked, that would give us a nice boost the way we shot up the charts there.

And not to single anyone out here, but seriously, if you aren't interested in a thread's topic, there's no law stating that you have to comment in the thread. If someone is running SETI, LHC@Home, or whatever, it's their right. I've seen enough trashing other projects here. I buy the hardware, I pay the electricity, I'll run whatever the hell I want on my farm. OK?

/rambling incoherent rant

This is truth.

All of my previous posts (if you where ref some of the stuff I said) where about my personal position, and where I'd like to see the team go.

I'm not a team leader, I don't even think I get a vote. (not to mention not having a right to tell someone else what to do with their hardware)

No matter where the [H]orde goes in the future, I would like to see us do what ever we set our sites on the best we can. We do F@H better than any other team, almost twice as well. We have the skill and the know how to get the most out of out boxen.
This is also becoming true with WCG. I'm not a fan so I don't run the client, but thats does not mean I don't notice a job well done. My nomination for HDC-er of the month was for his contributions to the WCG, and getting us going.

Fold on brothers (and sister if leslie is lurking)! What ever your DC of choice.

I fold on the boxes that get reasonable (GPU) points for the team, but since we found out that f@h is a personal VJ project and not supported by Stanford I really don't try too hard for that DC project.

I WCG on some systems, again for the team effort.

Since it's been voiced that Stanford has absolutely no ownership in this whatsoever, I've been very skeptical that this "Project" is even doing what we all believe it was supposed to be doing. "Canned" answers via PM to people inquiring about proof just further puts that doubt in my head.

Take a look at my contribution & ask me if I was dedicated to F@H. I personally feel that I have been deceived and my personal investment in time & equipment was all for nothing!

Mr. Pande, I hope you are getting everything you want out of this project and will eventually become very wealthy!

The above post is simply wrong. It's important to keep in mind what are the facts and what is rumor. In the end, all of this comes purely from a discussion about my not raising the points for the classic client. Here are the facts:

- All of FAH is owned by Stanford. Stanford owns the software, the copyright, the Folding@home trademark, everything. I (and my team) have no ownership stake in any part of it and see no profits from the calculations of FAH donors. This is discussed in detail in the FAQ.

- Stanford's Office of the Associate Dean of Science directly supports FAH financially, paying for our server room, networking charges, etc. He is very aware of FAH and I report to him in my capacity of Chair of Biophysics and in terms of FAH issues that need to be resolved.

- To date, FAH has resulted in great achievements, both in terms of quantity (see our numerous papers http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Paper) and quality (numerous awards from the scientific community http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Awards). This has all been open and public.

I hope that clears up the facts. I think that rumor originated from a phone call of a folder to Stanford's offices then misinterpreted the answers. You are free to check the facts with Stanford.

We need to stop bringing this up. It is just not true ....

Like I said, it wasn't directed in any direction in particular. I'm just sick of seeing all of the hate towards anything different. Someone posts a question about SETI, and gets 15 responses that pretty much say "SETI sucks, you should run F@H." Someone asks a question about LHC@Home and gets 15 responses along the lines of "STFU and GTFO with that crap. Run F@H." This is why we're #4157 in SETI. Everyone who would be running it under team [H] gets ran off so they run it under another team. They're not going to quit running SETI, they're just going to quit running it for the [H]orde.

Besides that, do we really need a history lesson on what happens when you start telling people what they should and shouldn't be running? Or what projects are or aren't OK to discuss here?

I completely agree with your concerns. I apologize if my post may have expressed a tone of undue disapproval. I only summarized what had occurred in the past, not where I think the team should be headed in the future.

I'll stick with the two projects I am running, F@H & WCG. As others have said, we could spread ourselves too thin and frankly, I have trouble keeping up with the info from just these two.

You'd be surprised how little it takes to make a strong presence in some of these other projects. Hgradio, Razor_FX_II and jim03 have pretty much made the [H]orde a big time player in GPUGRID already. And the way the DC-Vault is calculated, just having a team in every project gets you into at least the top 20 it appears.

Alan, I noticed the same thing a while back, and tend to agree with your take. I, too F@H with GPU and WCG with CPU because I got tired of the F@H SMP Win client, and jumped on the WCG bandwagon for the hell of it. (Besides, in F@H, I'd never be able to say that I'll be mowing Xilicon in a few weeks :D ) - but my thought is that my little dual core isn't really going to matter to our overall F@H or WCG standings - picking one of the Vault projects currently without a [H] presence that I have personal interest in would increase the ranking rather quickly. Maybe we just form some sort of a disavowed commando subteam here where we go take down the blank projects a bit at a time and see what that does for our rankings. Added bonus is that this small group can learn a bit more about these other projects in case F@H or WCG have issues down the road - always nice to have alternatives, and I frankly, my folding prioities are simply:

1: DC for Science
2: DC for the [H]orde

Count me in for any planned Vault infiltrations! After all, WCG was just one of these "other" projects several months ago, right?

There seems to be a lot of them from what I saw the other day. ARS is involved in every one monitored by the DC Vault - crazy.

A 'special forces' subteam sounds like a good idea for exploratory missions and it has been attempted by a few teams before. There are disadvantages however, and that can be discussed if and when this idea evolves beyond the conceptual stages.

Agreed with everything in your post. After the holidays, I'm thinking of experimenting with some of the DC projects I'm interested in as well, on the few computers I have currently not doing anything. I've wanted to do this for a long time and been procrastinating about it. I just have to find out how team creation is accomplished within the various projects and further investigate the science info on their home pages. Then, narrow down which projects are the best endeavors to run for my particular interests/hardware. That will probably take a long time from the looks of it.

Anyway, it's high time this team is given the universal DC credit equal to its potential as the largest ubercomputer in the world.

All of the top 10 teams have a presence in all projects, getting into the top 20 requires considerably less. And by a presence, I don't even mean top 10 in each project, just a having some points on the board.

Many of these projects are small enough that a couple people could make for a decent presence. Look how fast our GPUGRID team shot up the chart with pretty much 3 contributors. But like I said earlier, I don't know how to add teams to our page or if you even can anymore. And with so many of them being BOINC based, its real easy throw a few points in a dozen different directions, especially with an account manager to manage your entire farm.

Being ranked #123 isn't nearly [H]ard enough. I was doing F@H, WCG, GPUGRID, SIMAP, Rosetta, POEM, Climateprediction, proteins@home, DIMES, and LHC before I went WCG-only for the race with Anandtech. Spread out among among all that wasn't getting us ahead, but it did seem to stop our descent further down the list. :D

Team creation in most BOINC based projects is pretty simple and identical from project to project. We actually have more teams than are currently listed. I missed one or two last time I hunted them down to get them added, and SIMAP wouldn't get added because there was only one user (and still is only one) on the team. It would be crucial that we coordinate before running with the idea so we don't have another project with 3 teams like we managed in WCG.

(Besides, in F@H, I'd never be able to say that I'll be mowing Xilicon in a few weeks :D )

That, and in F@H, I would never be able to compete for a spot in the top 20 PPD list. Or to put it another way, I'm #1 on the team in SIMAP and POEM, and have the top RAC in climateprediction.net. :D

I will agree with that. I would be up for helping out on a couple small projects. I kind of always wanted to try the SHA-1 Collision project. Might not take too long to move up the ranks in that project. Also would give a nice boost to a lesser known project. Maybe we can organize something after the WCG challenge is over (not that I would completely change projects). :)

[H]ard DC Commandos ?

I like it.

If not that, then maybe something Viking themed to signify the raiding we're about to do. And then "Immigrant Song" can be our theme music. :p

Does anyone know how to get our teams updated in the DC-Vault? Can the GPUGRID be added?
I think we should answer some of these questions to begin with so when we do go after a project we can see the results in the DC-Vault.

Yep.. cool name indeed. I have no idea for a Viking name but maybe a Pirate name would work as well.

[H]argh Matey.. ;)

Cool idea the "raiding" party. I'll throw a few cores in for the effort. :D

@alan: I saw your attempt to get GpuGrid added to the Vault on the forums. I'll go sign up there and give a hand as well.

I'm working on GPUGRID, and once I get a few new projects to add to our team page, I'll get them added on. It's all done manually, so I'd rather do the form all at once rather than one project at at time. I'll start a running list of what we have and what we still need. I already have a few teams started that aren't submitted yet.

Get a load of some of the badges on there. KAMCOBILL's in particular.

Cool, thanks alan2308. If you need help with anything just let me know.
I joined a couple of the teams your on to add to it's user list which may be a requirment to be added to the vault.
I'll be in your rearview mirror soon.;)

I jumped on Spinhenge@Home, so that'll make 3 of us once I get a unit completed. Plus SIMAP, POEM and proteins@home with 2 members now.

Yeah I'm in on those aswell now. Just sent in one to POEM. Will have to wait until SIMAP and proteins@home start there work units back up to get one in.

This is what I currently have. If anyone wants to roll with any projects that we don't currently have a presence in, I'll do a unit or two to get some members on the list and points on the board. It might not be right away though, since I don't want to spread myself too thin during the race with the creampuffs. And of course, if there's a team that I haven't found yet, I would love to know about it and get it on the list.

And here and here are what the projects are.
