2008, a terrible year for PC gaming.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky was an awesome game. Truly one of the best from this year.

Totally agree. In the poll I made for GOTY I'm the only one who voted for it! Underrated I tell you!

It's not really suprising to know that fans of the original FO games would bitch about FO3. The originals have been so massively nostalgia hyped that they're approaching the gravity of an internet discussion over which D&D/AD&D ruleset is superior. Well, maybe not quite *that* bad but you get the picture.

^^^ 'essential games of 2008', like Starcraft II, Alan Wake and HL2:EP3 ;)

Between FO3 and The Witcher+EE, I'm happy with 2008. I'm really glad I made the decision to get FO3; I was starting to buy into all the angst before the game was released.

Then again I'm the type of person that can play a really good game for several months without getting bored. YMMV

This year was average at best for PC gaming, in the sense that we got a lot of good games without anything epic.

I was about to argue with you until I realized STALKER:SOC, Crysis, CoD4, and TF2 were all pre-2008 games that I didn't play until this year.

Far Cry 2 was a disappointment but I still enjoyed it.

I was looking forward to GTA4 but with everything I've read I'm going to pass until it hits the bargain bin. Doesn't matter when I get to it if the multiplayer is dead out of the box.

I still haven't opened STALKER:CS since I heard it was buggy. Planned on waiting for patches to get into it. Maybe it will salvage 2008 for me.

I'm really enjoying Left4Dead at the moment. It's been a long time since a good co-op pc game came out. Haven't played one since Hidden and Dangerous 2.

CoD:WaW blows very hard. Thank god they put out a multiplayer demo...what a joke.

Mixed year for me I guess but at least Dawn of War 2 almost garauntees I'll have something to do in 2009 :)

2008 has been better than 2003... lets just be thankful for that.

2003 was one of the worst years I've ever seen for PC gaming. The only good releases for the PC that year were Splinter Cell (didn't like it) Rainbow Six 3: RS (decent at best) and Tron 2.0. Max Payne 2 was arguably GOTY.

Stop whining.

This year was average at best for PC gaming, in the sense that we got a lot of good games without anything epic.

I think it was a bit better than average. We simply got more titles this year than we have in most of the "off" years. I agree that nothing truly epic was released but there were a few solid titles including this year.

Two of my favorites of 2008:

Sins of a Solar Empire
Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor

This year was one of the best years in a very long time for PC gaming. I have NO idea what in the world the OP is smoking. What on earth are you looking for? A repeat of 2007? I remember buying my 8800GTX the day in came out and having basically NOTHING worth playing on the stupid thing for an entire year.

Put down the crackpipe, son.

I thought this year was basically "sticking to the guns" of PC gaming. A decent influx of Real Time Strategy games/4X games, First Person Shooters, and Western RPGs. Games like Sins, The Witcher:EE, and Crysis Warhead being example exclusives. MMOs do continue to run the PC market, for better or worse. Multiplats are a mixed bag, though they usually tend to be that way. Haven't been seeing too many great simulation games though I'm not exactly in the mood for looking at them.

Also, the indie game scene has grown to flourish moreso on the PC this year than the PS3 or Wii (360 is debatable but I'd lean to PC). I'd wish the PC version of Braid would come out though.

Eh, it hasn't been great, but was better than last year. I honestly think that there are many good games out now, however they do not fit my boat.

Good games of 08?

Far Cry 2 - I liked plenty about it, besides it is very pretty.
Warhead - didn't finish it, was decent though
LOTRO: Mines of Moria - as good as MMO's get
Age of Conan - was fun for a bit, shame that it failed. Worth the money though
GTA IV - bugs aside, pretty fun and looks better than PS3
Fallout 3 - fun game, not my type though

2008 was about as good as 2007.

"Personally making you sick."
Well, there's a couple options.
A. Don't read the forums.
B. Suck it up.

I love gaming on my pc. And I disagree w/ the OP as well, all those games rocked.

lol this is hysterical.... PC gaming for me for 2008 was actually NON-EXISTANT.... because I spent all my gaming money for the PS3 and walked out a happier person:
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja: Storm
Socom: Confrontation
Little Big Planet

those were my three happy buys of the year not including World at War.

So for me.... im just gonna wait on Star Craft 2 and Diablo 3 before I jump back into PC gaming, cause I cant keep up with the expense of updating my hardware every 3 months to support the "next big title"

i disagree. i've never gamed on my pc as much as i have this year. cod 4, the witcher, oblivion, some painkiller some titan quest some crysis and some tmn.

I have to agree that 2008 was a disappointing year for PC gaming. Not only were there very few games worth buying, there were even fewer that truly captured my interest. Dead Space and Left 4 Dead were the only really good PC games for 2008, IMHO.

Here's to hoping that 2009's crop of games approaches the quality and quantity of 2004! :)

2008 was a very boring year I would say

Stalker CS was the only game i really enjoyed for the whole year

that and Mount and Blade

i felt like this year we got consolized

With the way video cards have been released its more like upgrade every 2 years. Anybody that thinks they NEED to upgrade every 3 months is very mistaken.

Exactly. And the saddest part of all of this is that intellectuals even from [H]ard supports this movement, happily upgrading their PCs every 6 month to be able to enjoy the same game a console user is playing on his 4 year old console. It's making me sick.

And all we ever get from you do-nothings is whiny forum posts. Go code the next Doom to run on an iphone with lifelike 3D graphics (not likely coming from someone who can't even grasp the differences between a PC and consoles) and then preach to us about how we need to stop upgrading our PCs. Until then, kindly stfu.

Did not find this year that bad, but it could of been better.

Some of the games i hated:

Frontlines
Farcry 2
Need for speed Undercover

I think thats all the games i really hated this year.

all the o.p.'s hardware must be working, so he cant start a thread about how xyz company customer service treated him so horribly. so now he will just bitch about games for no reason. dont like them? dont play them.

c'mon everyone should know the OP,dethred, by now......

This is a typical dethred thread.

Well, all of the below are worth buying / playing on PC for me - 24 of them, all best on PC IMO:
Alone in the Dark
American McGee's Grimm

Dead Space
DROD RPG Tendry's Tale
Devil May Cry 4
Space Siege
Elements
Fallout 3

Stop the FUD and drop the crack pipe. PC hardware isn't released in 3 month cycles. I'm still gaming on a 8800 GTX and it's moping the floor with the consoles.

I agree completely. PC gaming is becoming a stale genre and will continue to be unless developers go out on a limb and try something new.

I mean games like CoD are just getting old.. in a couple years they will have Call of Duty 8: Alien Encounters.. good riddance

So that means console gaming is also getting stale since most of the PC games are ports.

This forum is awesome. I make a thread using a very neutral tone, and by page 4, everyone is bitching and moaning at eachother. Actually, by post two it came to that.

Here's where the glory began:

The fuck is that supposed to mean? If you feel like you need to dumb things down to address people here, chief, mayhaps you should find yourself a more high-falutin' forum to peruse. I like how your entry on Age of Conan doesn't even have anything about the game, just that it got crushed by WoW within a few months, which clearly makes it a terrible game. The focus on activation limits for almost every single other entry in your list makes me extremely curious as to how many of these titles you actually purchased.

Er, I mean...played.

I wish there was a laughing smiley. Way to contribute to the fact that almost every thread on this forum degrades into a prepubescent shout fest.

The forum for the most part isn't the issue. It's whenever you give an oppinion that doesn't fit some folks when you get replies like that. Than things degenerate.

I kind of agree with you though. 08 was a relatively mediocre year IMO. Fo3 WAR and WoW were my 3 favs this year. WoW coming back in at the end. Everything else just looked rehash of the same old stuff.

I love PC gaming. Console games just kinda dominated my new game purchases this year.

No shit. This guy is dumber than a dodo bird.

Why do PC games have heftier requirements than console games? Let's see...

Maybe because nearly every game on consoles is rendered at or below 720P resolution (1280x720 being the main resolution) and then upscaled to 1080P, whereas a $600 computer can render many games at 1440x900 (900P) without any problems. Buy a ~$800 machine and you can game at 1680x1050 (1050P) and ~$1000 guarantees 1920x1200 (1200P).

Is it really that hard to figure out why you need to upgrade your machine every so often to continue to game at your native resolution? Seriously, if you aren't going to accept that the PC has always been a step ahead of consoles, then you sir need to sell your gaming rig and get a netbook so you can check your emails.

I'm not shouting here; I am telling you that you are an ignorant, holier-than-thou reject. Don't start a rant and expect people not to interject with their counter-rants or to state their opinions on how pathetic you are.

I second.

2008 wasn't too bad - 2007 was alot worse. The lack of titles pushed me into getting an Xbox 360 which I still play GOW2 on to this day.

AMEN

You know why 2008 was so terrible? Another long year without ANY DAMN NEWS ABOUT HL2 EP3. Seriously Valve, did you go on vacation and forget to tell us? I guess thats what I get for expecting something from someone who treats deadlines like a millionare treats pennies. Dicks.

Or perhaps they've been busy with Left 4 dead and updating TF2?

I agree, but they shouldn't have let their "bread and butter" go. Half-Life is what made Valve what they are if you ask me, so please throw your resources into your old school fans too. The thing that bothers me the most isn't the fact that its taken so long to get the game, rather the fact that we havent heard anything about it at all. We have zero legit news other than some basic concept art and speculation on steam forums. Please take your time to create a good game, but at the same time, go give an interview or release some development videos to tease us with.
