This year was horrible. The big titles for 2008 seemed to have either suffered from being console ports, or they were simply horrible to begin with.

Far Cry 2 - Terrible gameplay, never finished it myself, most people seemed to hate it. Activation limits.

Crysis Warhead - Supposed to be optimized and run much better on today's hardware... yet didn't. Activation limit.

Frontlines Fuel of War - Terrible gameplay, buggy as hell, multiplayer fell to less than 100 players online each night within the first few weeks.

Age of Conan - collapsed within a few months.

Grand theft Auto 4 - Runs like shit, and full of bugs for which Rockstar failed to accept responsibility. Activation limit (despite claims against the fact by developer), mind-boggling terrible DRM.

Fallout 3 - Console-itis, fans of the original seemed to hate it.

Any more to list?

Thoughts?

All you said about Fallout 3 is some fan boys hated it and you didn't list any games you actually liked. Might have been a bad year for you, maybe you should just stop playing games.

Your maturity is indicative of HardOCP. Thanks for the input. Next thread for you?

We see this thread every year, blah blah blah. Don't like it? Go become a game programmer.

Bad? Really?

FarCry 2 was a fun game once you stop expecting it to be some perfect open-world shooter. Get some explosives and just play it for some mindless fun with a decent story. Think of it as your typical action movie, it was more Shoot Em Up than Blood Diamonds, and that's fine. Plus it looked great and ran on reasonable hardware (q6600, 2gb RAM, 8800 GT; 1920x1200 no problem, settings on high, no AA/AF)

Left 4 Dead is my new addiction, mindless zombie blasting action.

Fallout3 is on my to-get list with Dead Space. Crysis was good fun and I'm sure there are some other titles that I'm missing.

If anything this seemed to be the year when PC gamers became elitist and decided that nothing short of Half-Life or Deus Ex is a good game anymore. When did it become cool to bitch & moan about the good ole days of gaming? It seems to have been right around CliffyB making his (really, really stupid) remarks and games being made for the PC and consoles (because if it comes out for more than just the PC then it must be a crap-port).

The fuck is that supposed to mean? If you feel like you need to dumb things down to address people here, chief, mayhaps you should find yourself a more high-falutin' forum to peruse. I like how your entry on Age of Conan doesn't even have anything about the game, just that it got crushed by WoW within a few months, which clearly makes it a terrible game. The focus on activation limits for almost every single other entry in your list makes me extremely curious as to how many of these titles you actually purchased.

Er, I mean...played.

Bitch, bitch, bitch! Why don't you just go outside and burn your computer?

I just got my new pc and i'm having fun with crysis, warhead, and farcry 2. Some people just set the bar to high on such trivial things.

So if we dig up 6 titles for the console that were horrible, does that make it a terrible year for console gaming too?

L4D - great
Witcher Enhanced Edition
Fallout 3
Dead Space - stop whining about the controls, they're fine
Call of Duty WaW - say what you want, I like it
Assassins Creed - the port worked great for me
Grid

Some I can't speak for but I heard are great.....

WotLK
Prince of Persia
PES 2009

honestly, how could you say it was terrible?

Quit gaming on computer... its obviously too complicated for you.. I don't know what else to say.. Take a break maybe, because it seems like everything pisses you off... Every one of those games except for AoC run perfectly, and besides GTA4, I've ended all of them as well... ROFL... Oi some people.

what are you talking about this year was one of the best years for video games, edit: nvm just realized every game i mentioned came out in 07.

FarCry 2 was a fun game once you stop expecting it to be some perfect open-world shooter. )

While true that blowing stuff up and setting shit on fire is a great fun... the fun lasts for about 30 minutes at a time. I played 50% of the game, it never really grabbed me. I haven't played it since. 5/10.

Left 4 Dead is my new addiction, mindless zombie blasting action.

Truth: An AMAZING LAN party game. Smack that zombie in the head, or steal one of his beers. I'm not so much a fan of random FPS intarweb gaming though. But its a great game. 8.5/10.

Fallout3 is on my to-get list with Dead Space. Crysis was good fun and I'm sure there are some other titles that I'm missing.
[/QUOTE]

Fallout 3 was decent, but doesn't hold the batteries from a candle to the originals. It had a similar problem to Oblivion: too much wandering just to fill up time. The combat also got repetitive. 6/10.

Dead Space: Amazing atmosphere. Cool Concept. Annoying camera view. My only beef with the game, other than it nearly made me shit myself a few times. To criticise: too much ooga booga from the closet scary (or just: wtf is that freaky shit)... not enough "atmospheric scary". There, I said it. Nevertheless: 8/10 (P.S. to the poo-pooers... turn off vsync, stops the lag, as with Pure).

The focus on activation limits for almost every single other entry in your list makes me extremely curious as to how many of these titles you actually purchased.

I may be wrong here, but generally pirates are the ones with no need to bitch about activation limits, because there are:
a) Cracks where the activation is removed
b) Mini-CD Images which trick the game
c) Cracked servers for online play
d) All of the above

So its only the people who purchase the stuff that get screwed. Amiright?

Witcher Enhanced Edition
Yes.

Other games of note:
Colonization (as an addict of this game for years, my only complaint is that they didn't redo the music from the old game. If anyone knows of a place to find such a thing (aka: not midi)... I offer cyb0r). 8.5/10.

Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor -- YES PLEASE! I rarely am in the mood for these games of late, but my god is this a masterpiece of masterpieces. Oh, and DRM free. *hug*

Sins of a Solar Empire - I love it, though I don't play it enough. Great idea, I'm a turtle though, so I'm waiting on the next expansion.

World of Goo - great, simple, but too short. Needs an expansion and a level editor.

Age of Conan - Epic fail on 1 front: Customer communication. I know a few people who talked to some Funcom execs, who really couldn't give a rats ass. If they'd had decent customer communication, this would have been a great game. Sadly Bugs and no communication = death to the game. such is it.

MMO Score: (the concept/implementation) 8/10
Actual Game Score after Customer Support: 2/10

iam wondering about 2009

kinda looking forward to Wolfenstein, rage and doom 4 tho, if there even out in 2009
HL ep3 and black mesa source also

eh release duke and be done with it

I have not paid too much attention to whats coming, but 2008 was a great year IMO.

No game is perfect but I really liked Warhead. Wish the story had followed what Phsycho did with Nomad around the islands but it was still fun and I Found it ran a lot better than Crysis. And I could play Crysis with very little tweaking and have a blast.

Left 4 Dead is a great game, best zombie shooter I have ever played. Not perfect but great fun and good to just screw around in.

I liked the origional Far Cry but the second one did not interest me much from watching the gameplay. The open world looked great, but I can get GTA for that so I did not buy it.

I do not own GTA 4 but it does not run like crap for everyone. When I first got GTA S:A it did not run super on my high end system of the time. Even on my current system the clouds will make it chug a little. Lots of games have bugs, but not everyone is experiencing bugs or problems. Rockstar will fix it in the end. Has not been out on PC for that long...

I dont pay to play my MMO's so no AOC for me.

Harping on games is very subjective and apparently a touchy subject, expand more on each game as to why you hate them so much aside from just the DRM. Publishers have a say in the type of protection that gets stuck into a game, not just the makers. So faulting a game for having DRM is not always the right place to stick the blame.

In a year with Fallout 3, it can't really be bad. Some games were a disappointment, but Fallout 3 made it for me. It's GOTY for sure.

Disagree with most of your opinions.

Far Cry 2 - I agree, the game is repetitive and impossibly dull. I never finished it. The respawn ruined it for me. An action taken in the game does not have any consequences, the world feels dead.

Crysis Warhead - Ran nicely on my PC, seemed smoother and better optimised. A fun high octane blast albeit way too short. The aliens still lack personality, KPA sections are still far superior

Haven't played Frontlines or Age of Conan

GTA IV - Excellent! Great story and challenging missions. Runs smoothly and haven't had one bug or crash after completing 20%. Brucie has to be one of the funniest characters in a game ever!

Fallout 3 - Great game, the wasteland is beautifully realised. Being a huge fan of the original games, I have to say Beth did a great job on the art direction and the atmosphere. The main quest is still way too short. DLC should keep me interested

Add in Dead Space, L4D, The Witcher EE, Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect it's been a more positive year for games than negative.

I didn't have any issues with activation limits in any of the games

Far Cry 2 for me was good fun, It ran well and looked great, the gameplay was straight forward but it was good old shoot em up fun, other than the crashes I really liked it.

Never played Crysis Warhead, I did say quite a few times in the forum that I didn't think the developers would pull magical performance increases out their ass, especially not while keeping the graphics fidelity high, I head it was better than Crysis but more compact which seems to be a good general opinion, and Crysis for me was pretty good so again I can't see it being all that bad.

Age of conan was pretty bad, the run to level 80 wasn't all that bad but there was no real end game and they didn't balance my class well (the assassin) so fights were unbalanced and not fun at all. PvP servers became gayed up and I quit pretty quickly.

GTA4, looks great, runs quite well for me, great fun, great game IMO

Fallout 3 awesome game, a huge fan of the first 2 and I think they did a pretty damn good job with it, I put it down after about 20-30 hours to play other things but will go back and finish it soon.

Don't forget the NVIDIA PhysX Power Pack for Unreal Tournament 3. That was my game of the year.

Fallout 3 was awesome! I loved it! Beat it like.. 4 times already. and still play it. Not because there are no other games, but it's that good.

L4D was great too. The mindlessness makes gaming late at night easy.

Someone go find 6-7 console games that sucked and make a thread that moans and complains about console games. Geez.. stop complaining about them. Dont like it, dont play it, dont buy it. Simple enough.

The games that I enjoyed the most this year was Audiosurf at 10$ off steam and the free browsergame cs-manager.com

I'm done getting fcked by EA and other organizations whom are busy raping wealthy gamers whom only continuously bends over whenever said organizations spits shit out on a regular basis. I'll come back to industrialized gaming when DiabloIII hits, I still have some faith in blizzard, but I don't have my hopes too high. Have fun spending your money on shit in 09 o/

It was a disaster this year. Too many games sucked and almost all them had problems with the protection. What ever happened to the days of innovation and trying new ideas. Exploring new ideas and ways of gaming. 2004 and back was the years of the pc. Not sure why so many games are crappy now. I think it has to do with consoles i think. With consoles, developers think they can get away with a quick buck. It use to be where games were patchable to fix performance. Now it seems like that doesn't even work anymore because the programming in games are so poor now. Games that could work on 1 core are now using 3-4 cores. Games made to run on cards 3 generations ago for consoles are running really poorly on even the highest end video card. Hopefully more people start modding games. It seems like the only way we're going to get a decent game is if the people create it.

Exactly. And the saddest part of all of this is that intellectuals even from [H]ard supports this movement, happily upgrading their PCs every 6 month to be able to enjoy the same game a console user is playing on his 4 year old console. It's making me sick.

I liked COD:WAW, and I liked L4D. I'm also looking forward to need for speed undercover (long time fan of the series). And also deadspace looks like fun.

depends what hardware you buy, I have my current system about 1.5 years now
(p35 chipset , q6600 (running at 2.8), 8800gtx , 4 gig ram) kicked out my x-fi card and using onboard spdif now.
I think if you choose the right hardware , it can last at least about 18months,
and yes that is still less than the console market, but if you take a comparison like gta s the pc looks better than the console version, on medium settings.

its called freedom of choice, if it is making you sick, go buy yourself a console then , nobody is stopping you . I can hear the "640k is enough for everyone" quote all over again.

ps. I am gonna upgrade my 8800gtx as soon as the GTX265 / 285 are available, and then in a few months an intel I7 . Just because I can ( and it does not make me sick, the opposite actually )

Agreed, many games havent been what we hoped but it has still been a good year for games (eventually).
I enjoyed Grid, Assassins Creed, Crysis Warhead, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, MOH Airborne, Flatout Ultimate Carnage, Kings Bounty: The Legend and theres more to try :)

Biggest disappointment is Farcry 2, the plot/gameplay is utter crap, what a waste of a game and game brand.

L4D - awesome but repetitive

Need 4 Speed UC - pure trash, a huge disappointment

Far Cry 2 - huge disappointment, very dull

It's definitely been so so. I'd say Crysis Warhead and Stalker CS were best.

....and Stalker CS were best.

How is the state of Clear Sky these days? I was a fan of the original, but all the reviews and bad word-of-mouth of Clear Sky kept me away from it's initial release. Has there been some considerable patches since then?

I'm thinking about checking it out on Steam.

Forgot to add spore to the list of suckage .

Fallout 3 and GTA are good games though. Kings Bounty is a good game too. I do agree GTA should run MUCH better than it does and the movement sucks.

I disagree with your opinion. I had a lot of fun with all the games you listed plus the ones you didn't list.

I thought it was good year, but there were alot of crappy titles.

I enjoyed ME, Witcher, and Spore. I am loving L4D, as long as I can find friends to play with. I know theres alot of WoW hate here, but WOTLK brought me back to my WoWCrack addiction.

I didn't bother with crapsys or FarCry, I looked at Dead Space but the camera angle was so obnoxious I didn't get past 10 minutes. Until GTA IV will let me run it and save games without having two separate "community accounts" im not going to bother with it either.

FarCry 2 isn't as bad as most people make it out to be. I haven't finished it either so obviously its not a fantastic game that kept me engrossed but I don't think it is as bad as many people say it is.

Crysis Warhead was fun. Short but fun. A much better game than the original Crysis though there are some things I wish they hadn't changed.

Left 4 Dead again has some issues but the gameplay was enjoyable. I'm also glad to see Co-op in it.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky was an awesome game. Truly one of the best from this year.

Age of Conan was very enjoyable for the most part. I typically can't stand MMO's but this was a good game. The devs just didn't make the right changes or they were too slow about making changes.

Yah none of the games on the OP's list were must buys for me either.

Right now I'm actively playing L4D and Lotro:MoM. I played WAR for a couple months but gave up on it.

I actually agree with OP to a certain extent. It wasnt a great year for PC gaming but could have been a lot worse. There were some sleeper hits ( Kings Bounty, Sins), and Fallout 3 was solid. Conan was an epic fail, to say that WoW was the cause does not hold water with me. Right now would be an excellent time for a Portal sequel to emerge..
