26" + for photoshop and pc/xbox360 gaming

Basically I'm looking for a panel that will serve me well in photo shop, as well as pc/console gaming, and some occasional movie watching. Dell 2709W UltraSharp seems to be the best choice for me so far. I was considering the Planar 26" but I heard the black levels aren't that great.

I heard that the response time on the Dell isn't that great, is that true? I am coming from a dell 2001fp with a 15ms response time. The 2709 is listed with an 8ms, so that must be a world different than what I am gaming on right now.

Is there any other monitors I should be looking at?
 
The 2709 has lag, which isn't good for games.
It also has some gamma shift, which isn't good for Photoshop.
I'd go with one of the 24-26" IPS displays, such as the Planar. The NECs have a bit more lag, but still less than the 2709.

There are so many ways to calculate "response time" that I tend to ignore that specification. Lag is a different issue, and the 2709 has more than the 2001.
 
The review confirmed the two things I mentioned about this monitor.
Input lag is mostly noticeable with mouse cursor movement. With gamepads, it will make very little difference.
 
Gamma shift and lag kinda scares me. Is the gamma shift and lag really that bad on this monitor? The 2709w actually lags more than the 2001fp?

I'm not 100% sure on that, but the 2005,2007 and 3007 series all have about 1 frame of lag or less. The review anodize posted said 3 frames for the 2709. That is not as bad as the 2405,7,9 series

"For most users, a lag of this sort is harmless, since it is not or is hardly noticed in normal work on the monitor. However, every person reacts differently and every PC system has different "basic lags". Both factors affect the threshold beyond which an input lag is noticeable."

Assuming you have a system that is up to date, you shouldn't see any lag under normal environment. For FPS games, 3fps can definitely cause some suffering. Although some reviews report less than 3fps.
As for gaming consoles, I remember 10e saying his 2709w is perfect with console games with no visible lag.

"Lag" is how long it takes before a pixel starts to change, and "response time" is how long it takes to change once the change has started.

Response time specifications tend to be unreliable because there are several ways to measure it. White to Black, or Black to White? How close to white or black does the pixel need to be before it is considered mostly changed? Some monitors overshoot the target to change faster. (if you want to go from 100 gray to 150 gray, the monitor may change to 180 gray before going back down to 150 gray, because more drastic changes occur faster). It's a mess.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the reviewer said anything about cursor movement. I just added that as my own observation.

3 frames is 3 frames, no matter who is using it.

I have done tests on lag, and even video cards vary in the amount of lag they add. Heck, one port on my video card is slower than another. The only way to truly test it is using a splitter cable.
 
From what I've seen in the 2709w thread, I think it looks to be a fine monitor.
I have one next to me which was ordered for my brother that is still sealed. I will be getting an LG 30'' later this week so I will see how the 2709w turns out compared to a 30'' S-IPS.
 
Thank you for the clarification on lag vs response time. So I'm assuming from the comments here that the lag on the 2709w is that its about average. Now about the gamma shift...how big of a issue is that with this monitor? Will this really effect the viewing angles of an image in photoshop...or watching a movie from my bed?
 
I'd say go with the Planar.

I'm still digging my DoubleSight DS-263N though :D. I'd heard OK things about the new 265W from DoubleSight, just more problems if you're thinking about hooking up things other than a computer to it.
 
Alright, did some research on the planar. People are saying that there is color banding issue when you use 1:1 with an xbox360. The reports that stated that were from a year ago, so did planar release any new revisions that fixed the issue?

Gamma shift on the 2709W is much less than on previous S-PVA LCDs. If you are watching it from a distance you will not notice it at all. You have to be real close to the display to see it. Even then it only shows in purple or some blues.

I upgraded from a Dell 2407wfp and I was pleasently surprised with the reduction in gamma shift. The other issue my 2407 had was black crush and the 2709W is vastly improved in that department also. The blacks are the best I have seen on a computer LCD. The 2709 is the first computer LCD that I actually enjoy watching video on. I added an USB HD reciever so I can keep an eye on sporting events wile I pay bills or browse the web. It is pretty cool. The only real problem with this display is 2 to 3 frams of lag and that is not a big deal unless you are a hardcore gammer. People that have no experience with the 2709W should not pretend like they do, Samsung has improved their S-PVA screens quite a bit over the past couple of years.

I got mine for $720.00 shiped to my door.
