Dell 2709W

This is my 2nd monitor from Dell, the first had problems with colour leakage on right side of screen and is going back tomorrow.

However even the 2nd one isn't perfect, it's darkish around the edges but it's not as noticable as the first one.

However what can be noticable is this:

http://i34.tinypic.com/2egh15g.jpg

The left is lighter than the right. Though this isn't hugely obvious usually.

Confusingly however, I also get this:

http://i33.tinypic.com/2dkiki9.jpg

Left doens't seem lighter at all.

I also can't notice any very obvious uniformity issues using DeadPixelTesters coloured screens.

So.. should I try my luck with a 3rd one or should I just stick with this and stop looking for any fault with a camera? I think I've heard complaints about the Dells being light on the left than right, that seems to be a sort of widepread manufacturing thing?

Anyways what do your guys think with your 2709s?

Btw, I prefer Adobe RGB preset

Where was it made, and what rev? Mine looks completely even, except for the extream right side. The brightness rolls off on the right 3/4" of the screen. I think they all have this to some degree. Yours looks like it is a little pink on the left and green on the right. I read that this was true in some of the A00 units, and maybe in others as well. I think the difference in color is what makes the dark blue background in the first pic look darker on the right.

I think the units made in Mexico are more even, but it could vary from one batch to the next as well.

Mine is Rev A01 made in Mexico Sept. 08.

I think I would return it again; especially if you paid full pop.

Good Luck

Dave

Maybe its Me,or my logitech g9 mouse reduces the mouse lag some people claim to see,but however hard I try I cant pick this up.and im glad:)

Yah; I have the G5 and it is way better than the wireless lazer I ditched.

Mine was made in Czech Republic Oct Rev A01

Yeah I think I will return it. Will ring Dell again tomorrow. I find it frustrating to buy a big ticket visual equipment and it's messed up in someway (grr). Audio purchases usually go much smoother...

Trouble is though, there isn't a similarly priced alternative to the 2709 so I guess I will keep trying.

the above picture shows clearly the difference between the 2 side of screen..

Thanks swantek, I am looking forward to someone (10e) posting their calibration files and showing how to setup properly :) I too am running in Adobe RGB Preset for the time being.

Lag results for my October A02 Made in Mexico:
I used a vga splitter and 1:1 1280x1024 (max supported by crt)
Averaged around 47ms most of the time with 63ms difference showing up every now and then. Thats no better than the A00 but it doesnt feel laggy at all. :)

Excuse the grainy pic.
And thats the end of that. :D

Here you go.

My apologies HFrook. Haven't had much time lately.

Here is the link:

http://rapidshare.com/files/158883054/Dell_2709W-sRGB-08-10-12.zip.html

The file is for Custom RGB mode of 91R, 90G, 89B. I use brightness of 0 to 5, but 0 is fine with these settings for around 140 cdm/2 whites.

Here's a link on installing the profile:

Here's a link to a little program that you can put on your desktop and instantly switch between profiles (if need be) or re-activate your ICM profile quickly:

Have fun!

No apologies needed my friend :) Thank you very much, I can't wait to install my 3850 and these new profiles :)

10e: Do i need to uninstall Adobe gamma to get the wincolor program to show up? I install it but it doesn't show up in the control panel?!

Update: Never mind I got it, now the question is will this load everytime I start the pc? Or do I need to add the /L command to it so it loads when windows starts?

Update 2: Next time i'll read the manual before asking :) In order to have it load the wanted profile when windows starts, just add a shortcut to the startup menu pointing to the WinColor app. Then just add a /L to the target field in properties.

Wow man, now my colors are back to normal ! Thanks alot. I am running with the adobe RGB preset and looks great. Are you running with standard with 91/90/89 as the RGB ? Thanks again my friend.

Hi guys,

Been looking at this forum for a while before buying the 2709w. Got the A01 from Czech aswell but hope to be receiving an A02 as a replacement because my screen isn't straight. The right corner is about 1cm closer to my desk than the left corner.

10e....could you please post your profile again? It could only be downloaded 10 times and is not available anymore.

Thx too all for all the info here...i ended up getting a very nice deal on mine as compensation for the crappy quality of the screen of my new Dell laptop :D

to those who have used the 2709 and the 2408: does the 2709 feel less laggy? or not laggy at all? as compared to the 2408 which is noticeable?

Does this monitor has the anti coating screen that is grainy and sparkle?

My Dell 3007 does and I heard the same with 3008.

About the "sound" thing you can hook up a pair of computer speakers to the green headphone jack on the back of the screen and the screen will take the HDMI audio from the Xbox and funnel it to the speakers, or you can (as mentioned before) get a speaker bar for the monitor which fulfills the same function. Additionally you can use all the headphone jacks and connect them to a surround sound receiver similarly to a SoundBlaster Audigy's set up (or surround sound from a motherboard).

Hope that helps.

Just a quick question on running a cable from the audio out on the panel to the line in on the sound card. I have done this and am only getting sound from the left front speaker no matter what audio out port on the panel i plug into. Right now I have it plugged into the green (front:L/R) and on my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card I have it plugged into the Line In port. Anyone have experience with setting this up? I am sure its something simple, but I have searched google and FAQs from the Turtle beach site to no avail.

Its a lot less laggy than the 2408 i used, but that 2408 was a rev A00 and ive read that the lag has been improved in later revisions of the 2408. In general use with the 2709 its near impossible (for me anyway) to pick out what little lag is there.

Thx a lot for the upload :D

Looks a lot better!! One question though, the profile is called "Dell 2709W-sRGB-08-10-12-919089rgb-140cdm2.icm"
I shouldn't put the monitor on sRGB should i? Because then i can't set the RGB too 91-90-89

Also, does anyone have the monitor hooked up through displayport? I do but having it connected like that i can't use options like Autoadjust....is that because it's not necessary or something?

Sorry for the, maybe, noob question but i'm just figuring out how this all works ;)

Check your cable to make sure it is stereo and not mono. I should have two black rings on the plug that goes into the socket. I can not say for sure, because I am not doing audio through my 2709w, but it looks like the green socket is the right connection. I would say use the headphone jack, but there isn't one which is kinda of a strange ommision. I guess they put that on the speaker bar.

Let us know what happens

Dave

Thanks. That was it, I was using a mono cable.

I called it that because it puts the monitor into sRGB gamma mode. The sRGB mode of this monitor is one step shy of atrocious. It looks so DE saturated that it looks like the monitor is nearly black and white. Horrible! :)

Auto adjust is not available through any digital connection. DisplayPort is digital too, so that's why you don't see it. I have used it with DisplayPort and didn't receive any enhancements or issues so it is another useful connection.

Thx a lot for the upload :D

Thx...that's kinda what i thought indeed :) It's just that my lappy only has VGA and Displayport, no other connections. The profile looks very good! Getting a Pantone Huey Pro Calibrator soon and i'll check how close that comes. It maybe is a budget calibration tool but it's getting really good reviews so very curious how it'll work out.

Thx for the help so far!

so this means that there is no lag-improvement over the A00? Does anyone else agree?

Not at all. It is pretty much as smooth as it gets. That grain/sparkle/dirty effect is common on IPS panels used in those two models. This model uses an S-PVA panel.

LG makes IPS, Samsung makes S-PVA.

Does this monitor has the anti coating screen that is grainy and sparkle?

My Dell 3007 does and I heard the same with 3008.

Excellent. Thanks HFrook. I'll use another service in the future to keep this from happening.

Well I am sending mine back to get refund. Yes past the 21 days but they were really nice and said no problem. Even though getting disconnected, transferred 3 times to the wrong person did not make me happy.

Its just this is the 2nd one and out of no were I have BL in 3 corners. And the brighness/contrast is really messed up on these I think. Like with the BL I can turn brightness to 0 and you still see the BL. Turning contrast to like 20 then and only then does it start to fade with brightness at 0. Take contrast anything past 60% and never see any diff.

I've been experiencing a problem with this monitor ... not exactly sure if it's an LCD hardware issue, a video card hardware issue, a driver issue, or an operating system issue ... but here it goes. I frequently connect to my PC using Remote Desktop from work. When I return home, and jiggle the mouse to activate my monitors, sometimes I find that the resolution of the monitor has dropped to its minimum (800x600 I think) so everything is huge on the screen. If I open up the display settings, and slide the resolution slider to the native resolution and either click "Apply" or "Ok" to save this setting, it usually doesn't stick. I wind up having to drop it down one notch ... or disable the second LCD I have connected to the card ... then sometimes it'll stick. Is this just pushing my video card too hard? It's an EVGA 8800GT w/ 512MB running on Windows Vista Ultimate.

got myself a A01 2709W screen, this thing is huge after my old CRT MAG 786FD
i like the screen except i have a pixel which is stuck on red and the mirror effect of the screen edge border line.

I've been thinkin about this monitor. I want a 24-28" monitor for strictly surfing and pc gaming. I don't do any photos/console gaming/tv watching on it. I enjoy FPS games, but suck so I'm not extremely competitive, but the lag could get to me. I also play mmorpgs, which I'm guessing would be a non factor.

Does the A02 version improve things at all? I'm a bit hesitant from that respect, but this monitor is very tempting.

sounds like you should stick to a TN panel if you're only concerns are web surfing and gaming

I have an A02 rev and the lag is no better than the A00 or A01.

Just got mine. A02 revision.

IM IN LOVE!

Input lag? WHAT INPUT LAG! If there is any, it does not bother me the least bit - and i play CSS all the time

Hey everyone, long time stalker at [H] forum, but recently just registered because I finally took the plunge and ordered the 2709! So excited, hope I get 1 with no defects.

I was reading the prad.de review, and on the first page it says:

"The driver CD contains the monitor profile (*.icm), the driver data (*.inf) and the Setup poster and user guide in HTML format. When the monitor driver is being installed, the colour profile is automatically connected as standard and it is difficult to remove it again. It is simplest to copy the profile (2709w.icm) from the folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color" and then load the required sRGB or AdobeRGB profile via the image properties."

What is the driver cd? Should I install it? And what does the bolded part mean... it's hard to remove? Maybe if anyone that have the 2709 shine some light on the driver cd that'd be great. I've also noticed that 10e has graciously posted his profile here, so I think I'm going to use that when I get my monitor, so would I still need to install the driver cd in this case?

I know I'm asking soo many questions but wow, I'm just so excited to see this puppy in action. And let me tell ya, the registration process at [H] isn't the fastest around, but hey I think it's worth it =)

Hey Mike,

I set mine at 50%, but if 60% looks good to you, then that's fine too.

Where do I set the contrast at with your profile 10e? I have it at 60% right now and it seems ok.

Welcome Keiki,

I don't know what they mean. Any color profile is painful to "uninstall", but the files themselves are always stored in the following directory, and can be physically deleted:

\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color

They also make some comment about "video" black levels (with video devices like BluRay players/consoles over HDMI) that I couldn't figure out either. The rest of the review is quite accurate though.

You can choose whether to use the driver CD when you get it. I don't think it will hurt or help either way, and it won't interfere with the installation of the color profile.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up 10e.

I'll post some feedback when I get the monitor, I'm using A VX924 right now so I should be able to tell whether I'm able to tolerate the input lag or not pretty quick I think.. which seems to be the big question/problem everyone has.
