I really need at least 8 cores (3d rendering) so I was thinking about getting Asus Z7S WS
with two Xeons. But now when i7 is around the corner maybe I should wait 2 months?
But will there be soon also i7 dual cpu option?

the only i7 chipset out right now is the x58, which is a single chip solution. there hasn't been any big announcements regarding other chipsets, so an 8 core i7 platform is more than 2 months away.

But there is no chance that on quad core i7 will be faster or same speed (when rendering scene in 3d) as 2x quad core 2.6 xeons?

i7 will have a higher IPC. Faster per core. So should be faster.

On the other hand, it's bonus 4 cores from hyperthreading, is only pseudo cores so most likely not as strong as dedicated cores like a dual socket system would have. So maybe less performance. *shrug* can only guess without direct comparison.

You'll probably have to wait for the Gainestown core, which is aimed at DP servers. But we don't know more than that it wil be introduced in 'Q1 2009', whenever that is.
If money is no object, you could always look at Dunnington. 2x6 cores is probably the best you can get for 3d rendering now (unless you want 4x6 corse ofcourse, which is possible).

Remember Each core have its own Cache now and Much larger L3. I am sure INTEL did a great job with I7 as Core 2 DUO. LOVE U INTEL.

The Xeon version of i7 (Gainestown) is DP capable. The Tylersburg chipset would be the equivalent version for Nehalem that you're considering for the Core 2 version of Xeon. It's due out in about 3 months.

Beckton-EX (native 8 core Nehalem-based Xeon) is a MP chip due out a few months later, but those will be very expensive.
