Mike Nash, VP for Windows Product Management, has made a post on the Windows Vista blog stating that the code name “Windows 7” will in fact be the operating system’s actual name. There you have it. Love it? Hate it? Let us know.

And, as you probably know, since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7." But now is a good time to announce that we've decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7."

Love it. I'm tired of all these names like XP or Vista that don't end up meaning anything because they change strategy soon after release.

I like it, it's simple and easy, like REAL software updates. If you are on Vista run "winver.exe" and you will see it is Windows 6.0. This is excellent, I love the name.

I like it, now you don't have to search up a codename to find the products development history and it sure gets rid of confusion.

They should have named it something likne Window 12. I can already see people saying OS X is better because it has a higher number.

I like it. I still refer to the different versions of MS Office by their number.

Simple and practical; I like it.

Although this naming convention won't work well after Windows 94...

Lol, we're back to the old days of Windows 1, Windows 2, Windows 3.1, Windows 3.1...

I like it. Perhaps Service Packs will be Windows 7.1, Windows 7.2...

I'm guessing they're intentionally trying to distance this product from Vista.

Unfortunately they both look identical from all the screenshots i've seen, unless they're going to revamp the interface people will still assume this is another vista when they see it.

Makes it a lot less confusing. I don't know why they didn't continue from windows 1,2,3,etc...

Well, thank God! I've been wishing for this since 95. If nothing else, it shows the maturity of a product to have the generation number on it. Dropping the decimal makes sense as well. Windows 7 looks more professional than Windows 7.0 does, and removes the geek factor.

Now, let's pray that Intel's new naming scheme works out as well.

Wasn't the original name for the next Windows OS supposed to be "Vienna?" Seem to remember reading that somewhere.

I like the name. Sounds good, too... kinda flows a bit. Much better than the staccato "XP" or the silly "Vista".

lol@ the one who mentioned Windows 7.11 for workgroups... that was great.

8 is my favorite number, it should be Windows 8

lol they are all ready working on windows 8. it is scheduled to come out about a year after 7.
wait for eight! (ohh! That rhymes!)

No, in all seriousness, I could not care less what they call it. I just wonder how many man hours Microsoft wasted to come to an agreement on the name "Windows 7".

I also hope that Microsoft decides to go back to just a home, and a pro version. Vista had way toomany different versions, of which most people just needed the most basic version.

Seconded. But you know people will bitch for an MCE, and then the obligatory EU edition. :p

Kind of boring, but at the same time I like it. Brings me back to Windows 3.1 (never used the older Windows)

Thank goodness. I much prefer the scheme of naming by version instead of some stupid arbitrary title. Good old Windows 3.1.

Great name!

But it would be even better if it was called Windows MuchBetterThanThatOSXCrap. That would quiet down those Mac fanbois.

Windows 7 you will be assimilated!
