Dell 2709W

Aw crap!
And i thought input lag was the only thing i would have to put up with. :(

I don't get this crap.

You would think that technology would only improve with these flat panels and that they would be perfected over time. The last monitor I bought was in 2005 which is what I am using now, the 2005fpw. This monitor is flawless. No input lag whatsoever, crazy off color hue tints, or uneven back lighting.

What is going on here?

How'd you guys get the AAA coupon to work? When I try to use it I'm told it's not valid for the segment I'm ordering from.

I have the 2005fpw as well and its superb. I wouldnt bother upgrading but 1680x1050 is starting to feel cramped. I wanted the Dell because of the connectivity and style but i might go with the Planar instead. I can live with the shortcomings of IPS, might not be able to stomach the PVA ones. :(

I was made an offer by my company's Dell sales rep that I could not refuse: Dell 2709W, shipped, for $538.31. I had to jump on that. Now that I've had it for a little while, I can give my honest opinion on the monitor. Disclaimer: I am an FPS gamer, as well as an MMO and RTS player. I'm not great on the technical specs, and I'm not the pickiest person in the world when it comes to monitors, but I know a good one when I see/use it and my opinion should count for something because of this.

First of all, this is my third Dell widescreen monitor. My first was a 2005FPW (I think that's the model), and my second was a 2407WFP. The 20" IS the best of the three, being based on an S-IPS panel. The 24" was also pretty damn good in my opinion, and the enhanced screen real estate was worth the minor tradeoffs made from going from a S-IPS panel to a PVA panel.

Now I have the 2709W. Color saturation seems higher (better?) than the 24". The display is not as bright out-of-the-box as the 24" (which is a good thing, the 24" blazed like the burning sands, out-of-the-box). When viewed at an angle, there is a slight pink hue to all whites and lighter shades of other colors. It is very minor on my particular monitor. The backlighting is perfectly even, as it was on my 24" and my 20". Zero dead pixels. The jury is still out on the touch-sensitive controls, but I think I'll get used to them in time. There's no ghosting on this monitor (there was a tiny amount on my 24"). Input lag: there is a tiny, tiny bit. I've been an FPS gamer since Doom was popular and I have played just about every FPS since then, so trust me when I say, the input lag is so minor it's barely noticable. I'm the only member of my immediate family that can even detect it. Lastly, I've heard concerns from friends of mine and others that this monitor may display a "screendoor" effect, being that the monitor is larger-than-normal for a native 1920x1200 display. The pixels obviously are noticably larger, but there is no "screendoor" effect; ie, the panel's pixels form a solid picture the whole way across the monitor without a mesh effect between the pixels.

Also, I watched Iron Man on it last night. I have seen blacker blacks, but this monitor is more than acceptable. Iron Man looked great on it.

So, all that being said,

Pro's:
It feels monsterous, even having stepped up from a 24".
Good color saturation and brightness out-of-the-box.
It has more connections in the back than any single person could ever possibly need.
No dead pixels.
No ghosting in fast-moving scenes.
DVD playback was good.
A good middle-of-the-road choice for people who like a large screen but do not have/want a $600 video card or an SLI/Crossfire setup.
Touch-sensitive controls?...

Con's:
Slight pink discoloration on light shades, when viewed from angles.
Traces of input lag do exist, though very very small on my particular monitor.
Touch-sensitive controls?...

Summary:
$538.31 well-spent, would spend again. :D

Thanks for the detailed review. I pulled the trigger last night, and am looking forward to stepping up from two dual non-widescreen 19" LCDs (one of which is an old Planar whose backlight is all f'ed up) to this beast. (I'll probably keep the working 19" around and maybe pivot it depending on how it all looks.

My apologies for not checking. I am at work right now, but I'll be sure to check tonight when I go home. :)

tnx for the review Ark, I also would like to know if it's a rev00 or 01, in case it's a rev01 have you got a crt to calculate input lag? Can do it, plz :)? Also can try the OSD ? some complained for a OSD's problem in rev00.

I just ordered the 2709w in italy and the delivery time is more than one month  I hope it's for the new production and they will send me the rev01

Shipped for 538.31 it's an offer that you must not refuse :) Now i payed it 630 euro with the special offer (normally is priced at 830 euro here)

Thanks for the awesome review Ark!

Do you guys think dual 27's are TOO big? Thats what I went with, hope I won't regret it! I need lots of space for multi-tasking. I liked dual 24"s so I figured what the heck.

There are a few left on ebay for $695 (free ship) and MSFT is offering 30% livesearch cashback again (up to $200 off).

If you're interested in getting one of these, you can't beat $495.

Sorry for the late reply, I got rapped up in a ton of shit last night.

My monitor is a Rev A00. So no dice on it being a newer one. :-/ Also, I no longer own a CRT at all so I cannot do an input lag test.

Well my order is still in production and it won't even ship until the 9th. So we'll see what happens. I'll post some pics when I get the monitors.

Ships on the 9th.. man.. that sucks.

Mine SAYS ships on the ...............6th WOOT!..

Yah I will do the same. I ordered on the 26 with a ship date of the 7th.

I am betting that Dell will ship a mix of A00 and A01. they do not want to say what the difference is, or that there even is a difference; so people don'r return A00 units to get A01.

What ever the difference is it will be small.

Just waiting for Dell to get off their ass and ship this thing. I ordered on the 30th, and it's not due to ship until the 9th.
Talk about taking their time. I remember the days when you'd receive the thing before they had a chance to update their website saying it had gone out.

Mine shipped today as Dell predicted. I ordered on the 26th. They must have come on the slow boat from China. They are dribbling them out like there is some kind of shortage. It does not make any sense to put something on sale and then ship them out one or two at a time after some kind of a manditory waiting period.

I remember ordering a precision workstation years ago. I was able to watch the production steps in near real time. A custom rig built to my specs was out the door and heading my way in a matter of three or four days. All of those back and forth communications to india must slow things a bit.

It was a good price; lets hope it is a good product.

Well mine shipped on Monday..well thats what dells site shows. Yet DHL picked it up on Tue. But will be here lol Friday DHL .. thinks. Yet I did get a "backorder" email from Dell the same day it shipped.

For the people who order from Ebay, has your lcd ship yet? If so, when did you order? Man, this thing is taking forever...

I ordered from Dell and they claimed it would and did ship yesterday. According to DHL it actually was picked up today, so Dell counts having givin shipping info to DHL as having been shipped. Whatever!

I will get it Monday I hope

Noticeable in white or light gray backgrounds. So if you're websurfing, chances are you'll be noticing it.

I haven't noticed this unless I'm very close to it. At normal 24" to 30" viewing distance this isn't easy to notice, and if it is, I have to specifically look for it. My only slight problem is that next to my NEC 26", the whites have a tiny tiny green cast to them, making the NEC's whites look a bit pink, but I haven't calibrated the Dell yet.

Does anyone know for sure if this revision even truly exists?

Mine is Rev A00 and it was built August 2008. Only for the 2408WFP was Rev A01 important due to a reduction in input lag and better sharpness controls due to poor, "halo'd" text. The 2709W doesn't suffer from this text issue at all, as far as I can tell.

There are no reported, or well known enhancements to 2709W with Rev A01 at this time, so either it doesn't exist, or Dell is for once staying tight-lipped.

Ok just got mine.. looks NICE! It shows A01 Sept 2008. I dont have a camera right here but later tonight I can if .. I dont know why anyone thinks its not a A01. I dont know what the difference is.

Have to.. test later..

Wow; that must be what the delay was about. I am still thinking that the differences will be minor.

DAMN YOU DELL :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Just got an email saying my shipment is delayed from Dell until the 16th. I ordered it on the 9/30. Talk about crappy service. More than half a month to ship an LCD? That's pathetic.

Lets take bets on if it will be delayed again.

My bet is yes. My bet is also that I get upgraded shipping because of this, or the price drops by the time it ships and I get my price adjusted.

Wow, It looks like I lucked out, because DHL says that mine is in route. It shipped on the 7th, ordered on the 26th. I guess with the $200 price reduction they are selling fast, or the new production run was small.

Sorry to hear about the delay; that is something close to torture.

Dave

Mine was supposed to ship tomorrow (ordered on the 1st) i guess i'll be getting my delay notification soon. *sigh*
