Apple has filed a lawsuit against the Victoria School of Business and Technology in Canada over the use of a logo that is shaped like an Apple. Rumor has it that some students are now afraid to give their teachers apples now because of the fruit’s striking resemblance to the company logo.

Apple's legal team is targeting a Vancouver Island college, Victoria School of Business and Technology, over its logo, which bares a slight resemblance to the Cupertino-based electronics manufacturer's famous logo.

An apple, since Newton, has always had a relation to education. Can't wait for somebody to say you can't use a light bulb to indicate an idea.

the logo looks nothing like Apple's logo. Someone needs to put down the pipe.

GUYZ. APPLE IS A TRENDY AND LOVING COMPANY THAT CARES ABOUT YOU AND YOUR INDIVIDUALITY, UNLIKE MICROSOFT.

Roflz.

Wow. I mean, yea, it's an apple and the little leaf is headed in the same direction, but the Apple logo is much more stylized.

Insert Apple stfu here.

Wow are they going to sue all producers of Apple juice next ?

I mean they put apples graphics on the box :D

Why haven't they sued NYC for being the "Big Apple" yet.

The schools logo is an apple, but it is very easy to distinguish from Apple's one with a bite out of it. This little lawsuit is pretty baseless imho.

Oh jeez, really? That is a new low. I don't think even Microsoft ever tried a lawsuit like this. Did they?

Apple does this sort of thing constantly. For all intents and purposes, if your logo features an apple-like object, you'd better be prepared to defend yourself from an Apple lawsuit, because it's simply an inevitability.

As for Microsoft? I can't recall any, no.

Mrmm, pretty damn close, they sued companies in the past for using "Windows" in their name, or some crazy crap like that.

like the line "students are now afraid to eat apples.." ,lol

would love to go to their HQ and throw an apple at them :D

They're working up a strategy to sue every homeowner who has windows on their houses.

A slight resemblance because both have a detached leaf? Otherwise they're completely different. Apple just wants a bite of their logo. ;)

VSBT is currently a large customer of Apple's, with a significant segment of its labs being Apple computers.

Hilarious. :D

Despite owning a mac an iphone, I personally hate Apples business tactics when it comes to their logo copyright. Who has given them the god given right to copyright fruit. Maybe I should go out and copyright the orange and sue everyone else... lol

I honestly can't believe some of the comments below the article. Many of the people seem to rationalize heavily in defend Apple. One guy even says:

"This is an obvious case where Apple is forced to react. In copyright law, you are obliged to defend your rights and you cannot choose who and when to react"

and this guy:

"This logo absolutely smacks of Apple Inc"

So thier businees tactics of selling you overpriced, overrated trendy junk is ok by you? You just dont like how they sue other companies? :D

despite almost 3000 out of 4000 users polled said the logos sufficiently differ.

Thats what got me. over 1/4 of the people polled think it infringes on apples copyrights.

Nah I read it as 1/4th thinks they look similar, not that they're infringing.

Hey it's an fricken apple. Can't do much in the way of logo design to make it significantly different from Apple's.

Can't the school just say it a different type of apple. Like Granny Smith or Red Delicious? I mean come because Apple using the name and logo they get own the rights of Apples? Apple's ego has increased 10000000000000000x compared to their market share...

While not an obvious case, copyright law is a crappy arena in that if you do not defend your copyright, you lose it. Apple probably loses more money and mindshare doing this, but they have to defend their copyright, even if it means that they just end up settling for nothing.

I hope they ditch their contract and dump their Macs in the trash.

Seriously. The logos are not even close. Apple = anal retentive dicks.

Defending the copyright isn't the same as suing everyone that uses an Apple as part of their logo. If it were closer to looking like the Apple logo, I'd say sure. But, it's an apple. That's as close as it gets. With such a common object (fruit) and many logos, especially schools where the apple is commonplace and where it is associated with, using an apple, this is ridiculous. And yes, I used too many comma's and that may be quite a run on sentence, but I really don't care, because I don't think Apple is right in this situation. Sure, I don't like Apple. But, this is why. And I agree that Appleheads are religious in nature, and I don't want to be a part of that. It's the Apple image and following that I don't like, and the business practices.

I love how a company like Apple can claim a fruit as a trademark and no one else is allowed to use it anymore without approval. Apples has long been associated with education and teachers, way before even computers was discovered.

Apple is pathetic... fail.

wow are you kidding me? it looks nothing like the damn MAC APPLE dude, wow..sueing someone for somethinig that LOOKS CLOSE TO IT? that's just retarded; i say no1 should buy apple products. expensive and cheap quality.
