how big of an upgrade would this be?

e6600 @ stock clocks? If you can get rid of the e6 for a good price and jump on the e8 for a lil more then it would be worth it. Just don't expect any really noticeable/drastic or mindblowing improvements. Aren't there 65nm vs 45nm comparison reviews out there?

yes, my current processor is not overclocked, this one would not be either. that isn't where i would buy it, was just a link for comparison. the one i linked is on sale today for 149.99 elsewhere. was just wondering how big of an upgrade it would be.

I'd go with the upgrade and overclock it (if even a small OC like 25%)

Even at stock you'll notice a bit of an upgrade but like the guy above said, it won't be a mind blowing difference.

What do you plan on using it for? Gaming? Video editing?

thanks for the reply... it would be used primarily for "general" computer use and light gaming (world of warcraft addict). my current processor is really plenty fast for what i use it for right now, that one i linked was just on sale for a good price. so i figured i'd see how much of a jump i'd get going to 45nm and a slightly higher clock.

higher front side bus and more L2 cache, you'll notice a difference, especially if you encode due to the SSE4.1, also as others have said, the chip overclocks like a dream. Expect 4.0ghz at close to if not stock voltage.

Well I wouldn't get the upgrade. I'd save the money right now (look at the economy...) and then use it if you need it in a few months. I see a ton of deals but unless I need it I don't bite.

If infact you did need a performance boost you could OC your cpu to 2.6 in a matter of 2 minutes with stock cooling (and probably stock voltage). If you really tried to could get your CPU to 3.0ghz+

To put it in perspective, I have my e2180 (stock 2.0ghz) running stabily at 3.1ghz with stock cooling and an idle of 30c (avg of 45c when I use my computer, not at 100%). So that's like a 60% overclock on stock cooling.

hehe.. yeah i hear ya. i definitely don't NEED it. ;) also, not interested in overclocking. even if only slightly.

Well either way you should just keep what you have now until it gets to the point of it not doing a good enough job for you.
