Hi i dont want to start a war or anything but i truely see pc gaming dieing further within the next few years. now before you bash me thinking im a console fanboy, listen. i love pc gaming, i want it to succeed more then console as i hate that in console gaming the quality of games is not good compared to the pc, im forced to play with a joypad and play online with only 16-20 people whilst i am use to playing 30+ on pc games.

i love the fact that i can download mods on pc games, from maps to even full blown mods that transforms the game into somthing completelet different(css game running on UT2K3 ).

i could even create my own mods, from changing the menu background pictures to playing DR DRE music in the main menu of a game.

i live for customization and consoles just doesnt have much of that.

Anyways back on topic, teh reason why i think pc gaming is dieing is becaouse of two reasons.

1. its easy to pirate games
2. EA's DRM

here is a full article about how drm/ cd copy protection is pretty much useless

http://draginol.joeuser.com/article/209

Now if i was a games company and i wanted to make money, what would i do? i would personally produce my games on consoles. if what i produce is a brillient game, i will get loads of profit from it, if its crap then so be it, not many people will buy it.

now if i was to produce for the pc version weather the game is good or not, i wont see alot of profit for the game due to piracy. i can stick as many DRM as i want, even make some of it online only, people will still crack it no matter what.

i personaly dont want to see pc gaming to die but i cant see any indication as to it surviving long. i recon in a few years time, the only game u can play on pc is MMO type games.

when posting here, try and think from the games companies views not your own. these people make games for money, to pay for there mortgage, bills etc so think from there angle for once.

cheers guys and i really do hope pc gaming doesnt die. we need a method of stoping piracy on pc gaming once and for all

I don't see it happening. If one thing were to change it'd be PC getting more consolized ports or side by side releases with consoles.

Also the whole DRM thing is just an arms race that the game devs/publishers and consumers are currently on the losing side of. Eventually a DRM scheme will be released that strikes a meaningful balance between being as non-intrusive as possible to gamers while also thrwarting pirates. Will it be in our lifetimes? Who knows?

Anyway, until consoles manage to attain the flexibility(modability, multitude of control methods, blah blah blah) PC's have had for LONG time I don't see PC gaming going anywhere. Atleast not for a while anyway.

I Totally disagree with you, it does not make business sence to drop PC gaming.

PC Gaming is allmost like a development force it has accelerated the need for faster graphics cards it pretty much inveted the idea of 3D acceleration, it pushed every part of PC mechanics to it's limit it's come up with PPU and many many other inventions.

These in turn will slowly filter down into the console market beefing up the console's performance.

I like to look at it like this, PC Gaming is the Formula 1 of gaming alots of good ideas get tested out in the forum and the few best ideas get played out in the "road market" or console gaming.

So on the hardware side there is deinatly a call for PC Gaming.

On the software side games companys are seing a steady drop in profits for their games and there is a drop in sales. Some of this is to do with piracy and there have been many many attempts to stop piracy (remember the sheets of paper with gid cord's) none of these worked succesfully and just like DRM they are quickly defeated.

part of this drop in profits tho is expectations the PC gaming nerd is a connisur of gaming he expects game to not only play well but look good aswell if only to justify the costs of a top-of-the-line gaming pc. unfortuantly this causes the costs of games to spiral out of control so being able to cheaply produce games is no longer possible and on-top of that PC games do sell for less than console games this is where I belive the erosion of profits is comming from.

But the pro's for this is the same with the hardware developers and software developers need to develop mature engines for games becuase if there is a fatal flaw in your game it's easier to patch on a PC than on a console where you need to include patch handles.

No obviously there are problems when porting from PC to consoles and visa versa, but these are genrally worked out before going gold.

Then there is the argument from people like myself who only game on their PC and to lop off this market would be rediclous, also remember there is the nostalgia of these comapnys alot of them started in the PC field and feel commited to it out of some sence of loyalty.

but most of all if big companys start pulling out of PC gaming their will find that the void will be VERY quickly filled with independant developers (like introversion) and it was not that long ago that the like of UBIsoft/Valve/EA were considered small and to give the indi's uncompeated access to a market with world wide distribusion and quick development cycles whould be allmost suisidal for the larger companies.

As I have said before PC gaming is important for consoles for it to exist without it consoles hardware would slow down and the console makers know this and encourage the games to be released on PC also to keep this market alive.

Well MMOs are the future of gaming and they work becuase you have to connect to a server to play the game. Even if singleplayer games are played alone and therefore logically offline, they should still make you login to a server to play. The way I see it this is the only way to combat the hackers.

not everyone has internet. the day internet becomes more affordable and globaly available throughout the world is the day you can therefore force people to be logged into a server while playing a single player game.

right now say if i want to game on my laptop. not everywhere has free wifi or internet

If nothing else WoW and other MMO's will keep PC gaming going for the foreseeable future. 10 million subscribers can't be wrong, can they? :D

personally, that day was when hl2 launched. they didn't even wait for affordable internets.

i had the net at the time, but i was pretty pissed when i had to connect to a server to unlock my boxed copy of hl2.

i can't imagine being without internet again, so it doesn't bother me so much anymore. it was just a bit of a shock to me at the time.

Business sence? Ok.

Anyway, PC gaming is fine. Less games will make it sure. The ones that will THRIVE are online. Single player gets pirated. Simple. I do not remember the last time I played a single player only game.

Lock the thread. This horse is dead.

There should be insta-locks on any thread with the words, "PC", "gaming" and/or "dead" in a topic title... Can I set the dead horse on fire or make it explode? :D

what if ur internet is down for a while or your on a business trip with your laptop and hl2 in it and u wish to have a go at it but realize, opps, my laptop aint hooked on the internet.

It's possible, but I haven't touched my 360 in about 6 months. PC I game on every single day for at least an hour.

Of course, With GoW2 coming out, I'll play that, but how long with it last, 4 days? Then my 360 will sit until the next FPS that is console only comes out.

Just my 02

Agreed.

Even if games do become more "console ports" in the future, there will still be games that are either target at PC and/or still look/perform well on PC.

Hopefully they do find that "balance" with their "protection methods", as to be less invasive/intrusive. I deal with it with titles I'm hardcore into, but it doesn't mean I like it or feel as if I should have to deal with pain in the ass DRMs.

It is indeed a bigger market than people think. Virtually everyone owns a PC, but not everyone owns a console, so when those people want to game, they game on PC. PC also has far too many advantages, with only a few "disadvantages" (regarding hardware/software compatibility issues) which isn't anything devs haven't been able to handle.

PC gaming isn't going anywhere, at least not for a long, long time.

PC GAMING IS ROCKING BABY!

Have you seen the games being released over this past month and the upcoming titles. I would have games coming out of my ears if I could afford them all. I will get them all. It will just take a while. ;)

Hardware is cheaper than ever and gaming video cards are cheap! THANKS to ATI!! :D

What you will see is more cross platform titles. THIS IS HAPPENING to all gaming platforms. It cost to much for third party developers to make exclusives games these days. So what you get with the PC is the same game but "usually" improved upon plus the bonus of free add ons and mods. Something you don't get with consoles. The problem with PC gaming is there are no promoters. This is where you come it. Tell everyone you know how sweet PC gaming is compared to consoles. Host some LAN parties. All the youngins at our LAN's prefer PC gaming once they had the chance to actually try it.

Check this out. A Square Enix game coming to PC!
NO I don't count their mmorpg :p http://www.lastremnant.info/

So buy your pc games, don't pirate. Support the exclusive titles you do see or the console devs who are trying out pc gaming (Capcom, Square) and keep on pc gaming. Stop letting the console fanboys and the ex exclusive pc developers (ID, Epic) rain on your parade.

I completely agree with you sir. The new COD, GTA4, Farcry 2, and oh!!!! the game that I have waited 10 freaking years for! Fallout 3

well i hope far cry 2 fallou3 etc dont have DRM shit in it or else im getting them on the console has stated by me before in those gaming threads.

as long as consoles have janky controllers that us old time mouse&keyboard warriors simply cannot use, PC gaming will never die

I really wish you people would stop posting this crap, it makes no sense at all. PC's are here to stay end of story.

Lock the thread. This horse is dead.

Next time you enter a thread where people discuss something you are sick and tired of then remind yourself to read the title and make the choice to NOT click the link ok? let alone making a reply. You might be tired of this subject but you are not everybody and it's a pretty damn hot topic even if it's been going on alot on here.

Lots of u guys are pretty confident too. Sure PC Gaming wont DIE but it's very likely to change and it's likely things will change a lot. So in some sense these threads makes alot of sense.

Anyway, to the guy who wrote that the internet isn't widely accesible enough to make require login authentication on singeplayer games, I really disagree. Where do you live in the mountains? You could login and verify your copy with a 56k modem. Seriously the net is available everywhere for a very reasonable price. Sure wLAN isn't that common just yet, so those who are moving around alot might be screwed, but seriously who plays triple a games on a laptop?

Its like, host a simple authentication server and screw over the few gamers without internet on their gamingrig and have everyone paying, or, keep releasing singeplayer games like they are now and get zero sales and a milion seeders on the pirate bay? But I don't know, this was just a rough idea for a change of direction. I have no idea if this would be feasible.

My RSI and carpal tunnel say, "I should have been playing consoles for 15 years."

Consoles get my vote.

Exactly my position..Ive played my PS3 more often than my 360..MSG4 FTW..:)

PC still has starcraft 2 and Red alert 3 coming out . at some point.

cant play those on console, or at least i think it would suck.

im going to the philippines this xmas and they just about have 56k internet there. also what if my home internet goes down for the only time im available to have a go at a pc game? im fucked yet again!

The PC earns more money than any other platform when it comes to games, the numbers for sales are skewed because most don't take into account digitial downloads and monthly subscriptions from MMO's and alike.

I think somoene posted stats recently that included this figures and it showed the PC on top.

Either way, Piracy has been around for a long time, and it's not "killed" anything, theres no hard evidence to show that piracy causes a significant loss of sales, you can only calculate the downloads and not which copies downloaded would have been a sale otherwise.

I've made countless posts on how consoles rely on the PC gaming industry to stay afloat in their current condition, I cba to post it again but basically if PC gaming does die then console manufacutrers like Sony and Microsoft are in big trouble.

Anyone who thinkgs PC gaming is going to "disappear" is "out to lunch".

Pc gaming to me is so far the best way in gaming.

Uh, it is the most popular as people have stated. It can even be financially feasible since some people don't even have TVs when they have a PC. 1080p TVs can be expensive if you go for a high quality one that doesn't look like total crap. Skewed numbers about retail only won't help your argument. Digital distribution & MMOs show a lot for how popular PCs truly are.

some PC gamers are so proud of the overall numbers of PC gaming, which is huge if you count MMOs, Sims, and other casual games. but I for one don't care for MMOs and Sims one bit. And success of MMOs doesn't help out the part of PC gaming I DO like at all. so whats the point of being proud of that.

oh thats right for the e-balls comparison of console and PC gaming, my bad.

exactly. right at this moment, pc's are only good for MMO'S, the sims type games,RTS and flight sims.

consoles are good at fighting games, rpg games, adventure/platform games, racing games, sports games and even FPS games which USE to be a pc thing.

pc's are not more popular then consoles in terms of gaming. look hwo many play gears of war on the 360 compared to the pc.

look how many play cod4 on the consoles then on the pc.

if they add keyboard mouse support for any console and release an mmo, for example, WoW.

PC gaming is beyond screwed.

PCs are where FPSes soar... no matter what, consoles don't have the precision control that PCs do.
