Considering the factory firmware is a pile of crap, I wouldn't question anyones motives for getting rid of it.Wouldn't the first question be what do the other firmware's provide that you're missing from the standard firmware? You haven't really provided us anything outside of you just want to put it on. What are you looking to gain?
I'm pretty sure DD-WRT supports up to V.8Also make sure any of these 3rd party firmwares are compatible with your WRT54G version.
Usually ver 1-6 will work just fine. Anything above I am not so sure they are supported at this time.

My input: be prepared to brick your router. it can happen, not likely though if you follow the directions carefully. just a word of caution. Also, these 3rd party firmwares are not w/o issues. i run dd-wrt on 3 different linksys routers and they do occasionally act stupid and require rebooting. that said, as long as this router isn't too critical, i'd install everything you can and decide for yourself! worst that happens is you lose $50... but again thats unlikely.
