A friend is getting a Q9550, now that they dropped, and is looking for a motherboard recommendation. I have been too busy tweaking my Q9450 on a asus commando for the past few months to keep up on the recent release of chipsets.

He wants a board that can provide very good oc abilities/potentials, without [H]ard cooling.

We have both been fans of asus boards for years and would like to keep our loyalty there, but I am open to researching other suggestions.

Thanks in advance. ;)

Aslo, has DDR3 become cost-to-preformance viable now? Does the 2000+ speeds there are finally reaching justify the cost yet? I know it didn't when I bought my board 8 months ago or so... :/

Any of the P45's should be able to take you to the max and DDR3 isn't to the point where I would buy it, especially when cheap DDR2 can still max out most chips and setups.

I second any P5Q line of Asus .... the P5Q Deluxe for $199 at newegg is good.
However, if it was me .. a p5q-e would be good enough or the p5q pro ... and its a lill cheaper

but seriously go with an asus p5q line mobo

Did you get a new Q9550? Can you tell us what stepping and batch you got? Intel announced a switch to the E0 stepping, but I'm not sure if those are available yet.

Thanks everyone, I guess the P5Q is where its at. I appreciate the input. I have always valued and respected the opinions I get here. :)

sethk -Its for a friend and he hasn't bought it yet, but i can let you know when he does (just pm me)...should be in the next week or so.

I just got a P5Q-E for my Q9450 ... it literally just arrived an hour ago so I haven't used it yet though.

If you want the best board to overclock with, look no further than the BIOSTAR TPower I45. It's going for 149.99 and features 2 PCI-E 2.0 slots as well.

My friend purchased this board and all he had to do was raise the FSB and leave every other setting on automatic. He has his Q6600 running @ 3.4Ghz this way. I'm sure he could get more if he actually tried.

There aren't really any confirmed "best boards" to overclock with. Results have been similar across different models and chipsets even. Plus, a single instance of anecdotal evidence isn't much of a case for supporting that claim. ;)

The P5Q pro is a nice chip, but overall the only thing it lacks is e-sata.
