Best aftermarket cooler for 4850/4870?

This little exercise has made it apparent that provided it has the proper amount of ramsinks and VRM sinks, ANY cooler compatible with the HD3870 series will also be compatible with the HD4870 and HD4850. We tried the Thermalright HR-03 GT, Thermaltake DuOrb, Coolink GFXChilla and Arctic Cooling S1 Rev.2 and every one of them fit without any problems at all.

Need advice on which is the best.
 
The accelero's you have to trim the fin or something to get the CF strips connected
 
They only looked at the Thermalright HR-03 GT, but mentioned in the article that others were compatible.

That is why I came here. It wasn't conclusive enough for me.

I know they reviewed the accelero S1 as well. They have a graph showing a comparison of several coolers, don't have the URL handy. The accelero s1 v2 seems to be not only the best bang for the buck but pretty much the best out there period.
 
The HR-03 is the best out of that bunch, although it's also pretty expensive(about $45 without a fan). The Accelero is the second-best, and it's quite a bit cheaper, although it also comes without a fan. The differences between the two aren't major, but if you have the cash to burn, you may as well go with the HR-03. If you're trying to do this on the cheap, the Accelero would definitely be the way to go.
 
I was a bit sceptical about the S1 Accelero but bought one as they were dirt cheap and fitted it to my 8800GTS 512mb. WOW! idle temp dropped from 56c to 38c and that was on passive, no fan. At load it went to 48c. I bought the added fan kit too just in case the passive cooling couldnt cope. I decided to fit the double fans, they are silent and dropped the cooling another 5c.

When my 4870 comes tomorrow I will definitely get the S1 for it.
 
If you want cheap and don't care about looks the Accelero gets good reviews.

If you care about looks, then the Thermaltake Duo Orb or the Zalman VF1000 both perform excellent.

However as a 4850 owner, I found that forcing the fan to operate at 50% speed kept it below the audible level of my system and dropped me to 42 Idle and 55 Load Oced to 690/1120. To me that is more then acceptable without having to void my warranty.

I would be careful with Accelero S1 on a HD4870 after reading that it cannot cool down the VRAM enough. Here's the link regarding the possible issue. LINK

I am still waiting for some reviews for the newer VGA coolers from Thermalright and Arctic cooling.
 
the shit thing about the accelero is that you cant get a longer crossfire cable like you can for sli... so you'd have to butcher the fins to get the bridges to fit through.

im waiting for some full cover cooling... i HATE using those gay little ramsinks... they get on my tits.
 
The new Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo is due out in mid-August according to a guy I talked to there, and it looks pretty good.

That's the unit I was going to go with but came across a good deal on the GFXChilla, so I decided to try it out while I waited for the AC. I'm so thoroughly happy with it that I see no reason to change it.
 
I have the S1 v2. for my 4870. On stock cooling, my idle temp was a whopping 77C. During load (ati Tool) it was 90C. Ambient room temp was 25C.

After I installed the S1, my idle temps dropped exactly 30C. It idles at 47C. During load, it was 57C. A HUUUUUGE difference.

I'm not running it passive though. I have a Azenx Bliztorm slot cooler on it (70mm exhaust blower & a 70mm fan in 1 unit).

There are 2 major issues with the S1 v2 and the 4870. The first is the VRM heatsink. The mounting holes do NOT line up with the pcb card. I had to mod it by cutting off the end of the VRM heatsink and use Artic Silver EPOXY to attack the VRM heatsink.

The second issue was that the memory heatsink that sits at the bottom (closest to the PCI-E edge) would not allow enough room for the heatpipe. Either put a single low-profile hs on it, or slightly move the heatsink away from the heatpipe. If you DON'T. then you run the risk of the actual S1 heatsink not sitting flush against the GPU.
