Would it work installing from a Vista Ultimate 64bit DVD using a Vista Ultimate SP1 32bit CD-Key (I know 32 and 64bit cdkeys are interchangeable, but unsure if the SP1 vs Non-SP1 throws it off).

Well, just to clarify. I am talking about a Vista 32bit "Evaluation" version (which is apparently a full version - but I haven't tried it yet). So with OEM Vistas, you can't go from 32 to 64bit with the same key correct? That is only for retail?

Yes you can.

The key doesn't care, in and version, whether it is 32bit or 64bit. The key only determines home premium, ultimate, etc.

Alright thanks.

I was unsure since I remember my XP Pro cdkey didn't work with an XP Pro SP2 CD, only the normal XP Pro one.

Vista keys are 32 bit / 64 bit interchangeable, meaning if you have a legit Vista key, it can be used to install the given 32 bit edition it is designed for or the 64 bit edition as well.

XP keys are a bit more tricky in that XP Home keys don't work for XP Pro, XP OEM keys don't work for retail and vice versa, XP MSDN keys don't work for OEM, that sort of thing.

I see, I thought Vista might have that same issue.

Thanks!

I have a vista home premium 32 bit disc / key, what's the easiest / cheapest way to get a 64 bit install disc?

You can buy one from Microsoft for about $10, assuming you don't have an OEM license. If you go the Microsoft's main Vista x64 page, there is a link at the bottom.

Just a follow up : i borrowed the 64 bit install disc to vista ultimate from a family member and put in my OEM vista home premium 32 bit key and it gave me a 64 bit home premium install. so, the key does work on both versions, even if it's not the exact right install disc and even if the key is OEM

That's because the discs are the same, aside from the x86 or x64 platform. The key you enter determines the license type and version installed.
