Airports Want Shockbands On Passengers?

If this wasn’t posted by The Washington Times, I would think it was a practical joke. C’mon, are airports really considering wrist bands that shock passengers into submission?

The Electronic ID Bracelet, as it’s referred to as, would be worn by every traveler “until they disembark the flight at their destination.” Yes, you read that correctly. Every airline passenger would be tracked by a government-funded GPS, containing personal, private and confidential information, and that it would shock the customer worse than an electronic dog collar if he/she got out of line?

aye caramba. at the vancouver international airport, a polish man became unruly after over 10 hours of sitting and waiting with nobody to help him.. he ended up getting tasered and going into cardiac arrest because of it.

i can now just imagine some old man or lady getting lippy with the poor airline service and getting shocked

i can't believe anyone could even dream up something like this, oi..

WTF...isn't that a little expensive, plus a little unrealistic? And, wouldn't it be "easy" enough to get out of one if a passenger wanted?

I hope that computer system doesn't ever get a problem and accidently think it was issued the shock command for everyone onboard.

This can be misused if the wrong people get a hold of it.

and what ever happened to radio frequencies on planes?

What a stupid idea that's going no where

I'm gonna go crazy and just play devil's advocate for kicks. Sadly people more and more are abusing their "freedoms" thinking they can get away with just about anything. There's a reason this is even being debated, and it's because some people have decided they are kings or queens of the air, all other passengers be damned. Sure there are scenarios like the above where a tragedy happened, but let's not forget all the other scenarios we've read about where someone went crazy onboard because they had too much to drink or just because they felt they had the right, and it negatively impacted everyone onboard and possibly the safety of the flight. If we are moving more and more towards a police state, perhaps we need to take a look at why.

Discuss. :p

How much control is too much? Are airports that unruly now?

It just reminds me of the intro to HL2. "You there, pick up that can."

Yet another reason to avoid the "freindly" skies.

If the airlines really want to be sued that badly, let them have at it. Oh, and they would get sued.

wah wah how come every republican i meet wants to play devils advocate...

think about this... terrorists develop a way to trigger the signal.. bam the shole plane is disabled everyone is frozen... being shocked while they go about looting, raping, whatever they want... blowing up buildings... but hey at least grandma is knocked unconsious.

then what if the terrorists.. you know being terrorists... wait till their goal time... rip off their shit... and then go to town fucking up people?

what if the tags fail and everyone is shocked?

what if the shocking causes tampering with electric signals and causes the plain to crash?

stop being retarded... we need better airport security... increase their wages would be a start... people work harder at 20$ /hour than 10$/hour with no benefits.

If that's directed at me, I'm not Republican. I don't officially affiliate with any party. And you're kinda crazy.

well if this happens i can say that i would NEVER fly again ever
nor would any one else i bet
good way to kill the airlines and you better bet they will fight it too

what have be becouse treating innocent people like convicted criminals

we lets just put ever US citizen under what is effectively house arrest from the day they are born

if every one has one of these things on all that time that would end crime wouldnt it?

slippery slope

I don't see this as any method to stopping terrorism.

Does anyone here think that before a terrorist boards a plane they act unruly causing a commotion? Do they skulk around with their collar flipped up and a hat pulled down like some old cartoon?

They blend in all nice and calm. Joe cool. Once they are on the plane is so hard to coordinate their attacks to take down the 4 stewardess' at once ?

This seems like a very half baked idea that hurts the law abiding people more then helping them. Wait a second this sounds like our discussion on DRM but to a whole new scary level.

I can't wait to see airport traffic fall off from this and then the airlines will be hurting for cash begging Uncle Sam for a handout. What a joke.

Thats not a problem. The plane's equipment is shielding and this isn't a problem. Just like in Hospitals. However they feel it is better to be safe then sorry, so they just so no to phones and such onboard.

I can't wait to hack it and turn them all on super-shock and make it so they cant be removed.

How is a shock collar at the airports going to stop a motivated individual with nothing on their mind but killing United States citizen's?

It won't.

Just like how people seem to think all the current security in place will stop someone trying to steal/blow up a plane. If they want to steal/blow up that plane - They are going to do it. Of course, who's to say they are going to do it to a plane? How about one of the millions of shipping canister's that comes into our ports every day. I don't imagine it would be too terribly difficult to load one up with a shitload of C4, pay off the captain of the ship, and then sail to the US. Less then 1% of those crates actually get inspected.

People are stupid. Shit is going to happen no matter how hard you try to stop it. Fighting fire with fire has never, and will never work. Even the oldest of text's confirms this (The Bible).

Agreed, I'm not saying it's a good thing. Just wanted to put a different perspective on it. I think if more average people stood up/spoke up and said "shutup" to these people ruining it for the rest of us, then we can probably reign ourselves in rather then having to force "the establishment" to make more rules and restrictions.

How about a more cheaper and simplistic solution? Zero tolerance policies... you become unruly... you will NEVER ever fly again.... simple. You make any kinda threats or anything, police can use lethal force... screw tazers.

There.

What if you're off your meds or have an undiagnosed medical condition?

Because I'm sure it would be really easy to prevent you form getting on board with a thin sheet of semi-rigid polyethelene that you could slip between the electrodes and your skin. You know, like those flexible cutting boards. I could imagine you could make about 30 from a $6 5 pack of them.

Stupid ideas from stupid people who think they are smarter than everyone else.

Wake me when we have a scary idea form an actual smart person.

Nobody gives the shocker to my gf but ME.

I'm finding this all a little too much lately - yea we had a terrorist attack but it only (and i say only with the utmost respect) killed ~3000 in a nation of 299 million as of 2006. We've spent untold trillions of dollars on this bs and all we are doing is policing ourselves and being paranoid. Kick all the security firms out of Washington because all they want is a lucrative contract, not a nation where freedom and security can co-exist.

I work as a consultant and my job is about 80% travel - a good half or so is air travel. I already submit to an awful lot of crap at the airport but I, and pretty much all of my compatriots, will outright refuse to fly if this ever got even into a "trial" stage. I am quite sure there are plenty of people, business or leisure travelers, who will refuse to fly as well. Unless the airlines wish to see consumer interest drop to ridiculously low levels and their lawsuit rates sky rocket, I suggest they lock this "idea" in a vault some where and forget they even thought it up.

Consumers have the ultimate power in our society - the power to object, refuse and/or find another way.

What if you're off your meds or have an undiagnosed medical condition?

Their problem. If they deem to be a threat of airline crew and passengers, they should not fly, no matter what medical condition they may have. There are private jets and specialized services for these folks and if you are known to have such condition, even basic airlines can make special arrangements for you.

Ignorance is not an excuse. I'd rather have people off their meds not fly than me and everyone else having a tazer wrapped around my arm.... but that's just me.

Nobody gives the shocker to my gf but ME.

OOps ;) :D

Seriously... as if the airlines weren't having enough trouble making money... Seriously.... wow...

Airline Exec 1) "Hmm how should we increase our revune?"
Airline Exec 2) "Lets put electric dog collars on our customers"
Airline Exec 1) "That sounds like a great idea"

.... seriously....

I'm at a loss for words how anyone could be dumb enough....

Oh wait... I'm sure we'll have the "I'm not doing anything wrong, so I won't accidently get tazed" people in here in a min...

+1

a shock-colar system would not stop actual terrorists - only agrivate law-abiding citizens.

What if you're off your meds or have an undiagnosed medical condition?

Well, if you have a diagnosed condition, and you are not taking your meds, that's your fault. If you have an undiagnosed condition, that's your doctors fault, that means you should sure him for everything he is worth along with airport security.

I read about this earlier on the consumerist, I love the graphic that they doctored from the company's website (http://consumerist.com/tag/departme...his-remote+controlled-stun-device-to-yourself). There is immense potential for abuse and really very easy methods for tampering/circumventing a system such as this (ex. slip a non-conductive plate/band underneath the braclet). The more important underlying question in all of this, is what kind of a society are we becoming? Should we really be contemplating tazing people on planes to feel safe? and where do we draw the line? What if the kid in the seat behind me won't shut-up and stop kicking my seat? Can I ask the flight attendant to "taze" him for me (or can I hack the system and do it myself)? They brought up a better idea in the article I linked to, if you are that terrified, why not load the passengers up on gernies and knock them unconsious for the entire flight, you wouldn't have to worry about security, service, cokes/peanuts, etc... and you could pack them in like sardines (no legroom), after all they are unconsious.

this brings up a good point here
what about the elderly ? people with pacemakers? CHILDREN?

also all you have to stop this is show little Suzy on the evening news with thing thing on and the public will have a shit fit

i can get people over 18 but this wont fly (pardon the pun) with the public if there going to put them on kids too...

I guess I wont be flying then.
I am a human being, not an animal.

for your protection....

add this to the already lengthy list of why I will never fly anywhere again. Period.

Hmm, unless you're some type of new robot-human, you are, in fact, still an animal. I get what you were attempting to convey however.

This concept is so far down the slippery slope it's pathetic. Even at best, the 10 dollar an hour idiot manning the DHS stand is going to have a button to do this, that's a given. I can remember a time at the airport in Atlanta, where the DHS rep literally screamed in my face for not holding my wallet completely level and at shoulder height. There was no purpose in this, at all. Rather, they simply wanted to prove that they could make me hold my wallet level, at shoulder height. Hell, I was only traveling with my wallet (no bags, no carry-on, nothing).

Anywhere else that a non-police officer treated my like that, I would have dropped them on the spot. Of course, with DHS that would have meant arrest + no-fly list. Now, they want to give that person a button to shock me because they had a bad time with Cletus at the trailer park last night? I don't think so.

Even with a properly trained person, doing as they're supposed to, per regulations, it's now at the whim of those making the regulations what constitutes right and wrong, and once the control system is in place, it's all downhill from there.

Best solution: Armed Air Marshals on flights. Dressed in plain clothes, anonymously blending in with normal passengers. They already are some *some* flights, but they need to be on *every* flight.

1) Anyone that travels as a regular part of their work would object strongly, quit flying, or at least reduce their air travel significantly while they replaced their job.
2) Vacation travelers would stop traveling by air. Can you imagine someone telling you that you are required to put one of these things on one of your kids?
3) If either one ot two above happens, the airlines would lose passengers and revenue, so expect them to "ground" this idea permanently soon - it will never fly.
3) Any "qualified" terrorist" (and the threshold is pretty low) would find a way to either get around it or exploit it so it is pointless to implement.

Stupid idea... bury it quickly!

Before everyone loses all sense of perspective, look at the info again.

According to a letter from DHS official, Paul S. Ruwaldt of the Science and Technology Directorate, office of Research and Development, to the inventor whom he had previously met with, he wrote, “To make it clear, we [the federal government] are interested in…the immobilizing security bracelet, and look forward to receiving a written proposal.” The letterhead, in case you were wondering, came from the DHS office at the William J. Hughes Technical Center at the Atlantic City International Airport, or the Federal Aviation Administration headquarters.

In another part of the letter, Mr. Ruwaldt confirmed, “It is conceivable to envision a use to improve air security, on passenger planes.”

All we really know is that one member of the government is looking at this bracelet. There is no mention that airports or airlines have any interest in it, which makes the title of this thread misleading.

Let's not freak out because one guy wrote a letter to another guy.

I hope these methods of control are just a "fad" and that no such nonsense comes to fruition. Stories like these drain my optimism for future freedom.
