French Preview of 4850 Up

Thanks for the link. The 4850 seems to beat the 9800GTX with AA in most tests. Without AA, the 9800GTX seems to pull ahead a bit in more tests.

The 4850 beats the GTX 260 without AA in: Rainbox Six: Vegas, GRID (also with AA) and Bioshock.

Very promising.

Test system was:

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770
Asus Striker II
4 Go DDR3 1066
Windows Vista SP1
Forceware 177.34
Catalyst 8.5
Catalyst beta for Radeon HD 4850

am i gonna have to get a 4870 for a dual slot cooler? i refuse to use video cards that dont back vent.

Strange, it sucked in CoH. Yet it does well in some of the other games.

I can't read french, did they not test it with AA in DX10 on Bioshock, or would it just not run?

EDIT: never mind, beaten to it. Damn, though...definitely making it harder to wait on the 4870...

Wow, the 4850 does look great!

A sub $200 beating the 9800GTX across the board with AA enabled. It even beats the $400 GTX260 in some games.

Not so rough translation of the conclusion:

"This short overview of the Radeaon HD 4850's performance is rather promising. Contrary to what some whould have thought regarding it's quick time to market, befor the official release date, the card is very attractive. Available at 159 Euros, it offers a price/performance with which no card from Nvidia can match. Without anti-aliasing it provides a level of performance similar to the 9800 GTX, but this card can be found, in the best case, 220 Euros, often more.

Antialiasing is one place where the card shows its strength when compared to the 9800 GTX, somtimes signifigantly in situation where memory utilization is importannt, the Geforce having more difficulty here. With its new GPU, AMD appears therefore to have finally corrected this default with the HD 2000s and 3000s and retaken its traditional strong spot.

Come back next weee for complete testes of the HD 4800s!"

I knew that master's in French lit and time at the Sorbonne would pay off one day!!! Take that $30 Statford loan!

It looks like we have a winner for this gens mid-range card.

Everyone with a reasonably sized wallet, order now.

Shame you can't do crossfire on every motherboard :(

I just started the route of SLI'ed 9600GT's because I can't crossfire. Bummer.

Just to sum it up, it looks as if it is a 3-10 FPS above the 9800 GTX in most of the tests. Bring on the 4870!

This means that:

4850>9800GTX, thus the 4870=GTX 260 (more or less).

Therefore, the 4870X2 will blow the GTX 280 out of the water for a smaller price.

Plus, it seems that ATI finally has the AA advantage!:)

Not just win, but absolutely cream nV this round unless the GTX 200s are reduced significantly.

This probably also means dirt cheap G92s.

I was planning to get a 8800GTS as it gets cheaper, but the 4850 is turning out to be the better bang for the buck card.

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised Ati is pricing it that low.

In a few cases it's beating the GTX 260 but in others is lagging behind even the 9800GTX, maybe the pricing is due to inconsistant performance, thats my best guess but based on these results they should be charging more.

wow, close performance and/or sometimes faster than a 9800GTX with AA on.
all for $199, this is going to be a killer mid-range card.
Cya later 8800gt for the bang-for-buck spot.

Not necessarily, how much is the 8800GT running these days?
$150? Less?

Don't forget the 9600GT, too.

im glad the 4850 trades blows with the 9800GTX, but it would have been awesome of they released those cards 3-2 months ago and the 4870x2 was the one being released next week.

What is really surprising to me is that this card actually beats or comes close to the 260 in some games. I find that amazing as ATI's low-mid level card.

Anybody heard if this card overclocks well?

+1.

The 4850 (along with the 3870X2) is displaying very inconsistent performance.

I am afraid as well that the 4870 will thrive to performance above the GTX 280 in some games while dipping down to 8800 GT performance in others.

At least when you go with Nvidia, you get fairly consistent and predictable performance.

performance inconsistancies from game to game should be ironed out after an official driver release or two.

Maybe you didn't read the part "Catalyst 8.5" and "Beta drivers"
