Putting CFW on your PSP Slim - Having trouble figuring it out? Look inside for info

Sweet! It took about a month, but we got our sticky back! congrats to everyone that's been helping out/jumping in/following along!

Ok, I just got another PSP its a slim with 3.93. It came with 2 batteries, 1 slim battery (fits just fine) and a fat battery. All I know is that it doesn't fit underneath the slim's battery cover so I'm assuming that it is a fat PSP's battery.

Would I be correct in assuming that I would be able to hardmod that battery to turn it into a Pandora's Battery to use in my attempt at putting CFW onto my PSP? Or do I have to look at some sort of code or number on the battery to determine if it is a fat battery?

If so, I'm going to head out right after work and buy a 2nd memory card :)

It could also be an extended battery. If the front says:

SONY (PS symbol)
PSP
Battery Pack
3.6v
2200mAh

Back:

SONY
Model PSP-280 _ _ _
Battery Pack 3.6v- - - - 2200mAh

If it says what I just listed, then it's an extended life battery for a PSP fat/PSP Slim. When I bought mine, it came with bulged out covers for the battery pack, which are larget than the normal PSP Slim covers. You would be correct to say that the battery doesn't fit under the cover of the Slim battery. THat would be the case, if you did not get the extended battery cover with the extended battery.

As a side note, My PSP Slim is silver, so I am using the silver extended battery cover with mine. I will have the black one, and it's never been used. If your battery in question is the same as mine, and you have a PSP Slim, I'd be will to send you the black one if you'd be willing to shoot a few $ over PP to cover shipping. PM me if interested.

press release from November detailing the battery that I am talking about, and what it looks like: http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/11/sony-introduces.html

yeah, the extra battery that I have is an extended battery then. Thanks for the offer but I dont plan on using it much, I'll primarily use the slim battery. But what I want to know is whether or not I can use it as a Pandora's battery?

Yes, and no. Refer to page #1 of this thread for instructions on how to make it a hard-modded battery. Although some refer to any battery that allows you to load CFW on the PSP as a "Pandora's battery," I draw a distinction between the old fat batteries that actually had code written to them. The slims that you have to hard-mod. A true "Pandoras battery" is a soft-mod operation that can be reversed when the CFW load is completed. It is not possible to soft-mod a Slim battery, only a hard-mod will suffice (although, if done correctly, it can be reversed).

So, to answer your question more directly...

q: "But what I want to know is whether or not I can use it as a Pandora's battery?"

a: No. it will never be a Pandora's battery, because you can't write any code to the EEPROM on the PCB inside the battery. Only Fat batteries support this modification. Slim batteries (extended or regular) can only be hard-modified in order to acheive the same result. Your battery will function (once modified) to load CFW, and unbrick a bricked PSP, however, if that is your intention. The correct term for what you will have when you're done modifying it is a "tool battery," or "unbricking battery."

Yes, I know...bitch, bitch bitch. :D

Also, my personal suggestion is to mod the slimmer battery, and obtain an extended battery cover for the extended life battery, and use that as your main battery (the extended one). Just a suggestion.

added list of names to post #2 (previously reserved) for those that have told me that they used this thread to get CFW loaded on their PSP. If anyone else has a success story, please let me know, and we can add you as well. Don't discount using the guide for any reason, I can make a category for anything. Once I get enough informaiton, I will convert it to a spreadsheet formation, with categories.

FOR THOSE OF YOU ALREADY ON THE LIST - If you have any interest in giving me your PSP model #, or any other details, I can add that into the list as well, for later conversion into spreadsheet format.

Thanks to all that have been contributing!

I took your advice and I just modded the slim battery. Boy was it a pain in the ass to open up. Now I just have to go and get a spare memory stick to turn into a mms. I have a 4gig right now but I'd rather not use that and pay for another 4gig, and Gamestop didn't have any memory cards which was lame because that was the only place I had time to go to. Guess I'll get it tomorrow and finish it up

If that offer is still good I'd gladly paypal you a couple bucks for shipping of the bigger cover, but I just moved and the mail carrier hasn't taken the slip that tells them I live here now so hopefully in a couple days they'll have taken it and then we can exchange info.

wish me luck tomorrow haha

yes, the offer still stands on the battery cover. I'm glad you took my advice on which one to mod, and hopefully you will be too. I wish you luck, and I hope that we will get to add your name to post #2 (successful CFW loads). Let me know if you need any additional help!

as long as the psp turns on (light turns green) and the screen doesn't turn on that means you have a successful pandora's battery right? Because I didn't see one of the links on the first page so I followed a youtube video that cuts the leg that is diagonal from the one shown in the link that you posted.

Also, it says I need an AC adapter, do I really need one or could I just use the other (nonmodded) battery that I have.

yes, green light and no video display=good battery for flashing. you will need the AC adapter to complete the CFW load, along with a successfully formatted Memory Stick Pro Duo, at least 64MB in size, but not bigger than 4GB.

thanks, just 90 more minutes till I can go pick up the final pieces to finally get a hacked psp again.

Awesome! thanks for this thread, I'm up and running 3.90 M33-3.

Getting all of the "real" information together was the hardest part. It was all out of date, and as you can see from post #1, in a lot of different places. Glad I could help. You are being added to the list of successful conversions. Congratulations! If there's anything else that you need assistance with, please let me/us know!

I was confused for a while where to put the emulator files then I found an app (called Emu_Emu_Easy_installer_al l_FW) which installed the emulators I wanted but when I go to the memory card and select any of the emulators it tries to load then gives me the error message

"The game could not be started (80020148)"

I can play the .cso's that I have on the memory card and UMDs. What is the issue with playing emulators?

I just went into recovery mode and changed the kernel to 1.5...that didn't help. I also formatted flash1 and reset settings and that didn't help either.

[EDIT] I just installed an SNES emulator using this : http://dl.qj.net/PSP-Tribe-Emulators-installer-v4.0-HardBird-Editio-PSP/pg/12/fid/16428/catid/171

and it works however it only had an SNES emulator, no NES, GBA or GBC emulators (the other 3 that I wanted...any idea?

Unless you're running a fat, kernel 1.5 will not help you, as the slim does not work with 1.5 kernel. the emulators go into the GAME folder. See Post #11 for screenshot of the directory structure, and where emulators (and any other program) should be placed.

Emulators sometimes are not particularly compatible with some CFW versions. You might try looking at my list of emulators on post #1 and seeing if you don't have a different version that may be causing issues. What emulator, and what versions are giving you trouble? I have seen the error that you are listing with multiple programs that I had personally tried. Some just don't work, but usually it's a version issue.

I've been trying to use these 2

NesterJ 1.20beta2
gpSP v.9

I have an SNES emulator working now so now I need to find good versions of NES, GBA, and GBC. I'll go look at the first post

you will likely have to find the emulator for each system that is compatible. as far as I know, there's no all in one. Each system requires it's own emulator. Oh, and before you go asking, the only N64 emulator is Daedalus, and it's in beta...and works almost never. I would try Google to see if there's a newer version of the emulators that you're trying to use. Optionally, looking for another emulator may be in order. I do not have emulators listed for the systems you are looking for, I don't think. If you find ones that work well, submitting the links would be great, as we could use the information to build a list of working emulators for 3.90 m33-3.

ok sounds good. if I find any I'll let you know. And yeah I had Daedalus on my old fat PSP and I tried running Majora's Mask...terrible experience.

ok found GBA and NES emulators that work.

NES Emulator

Gameboy/Gameboy Color/Sega Master/Game Gear Emulator

Thank you very much for those. I am adding (and crediting you) these to post #1. Please let me know if you find any others.

note - added (to the bottom of post #1) a list of known working emulators, as promised. If anyone else has submissions, please let me know!

I have updated post #1 to fix formatting issues/colors/sizes/fonts/category layout that I have been unhappy with for a while. I hope this makes it easier for all of you to read. Credit to whom it is due, Incinerator has provided us with a list of working emu's and links to the pages. I have updated the known working applications list with links, and guide info as well. If anyone has any suggestions for color combos, or layout, please let me know. I make no claims of being a webmaster.

i like EMU's as much as the next guy, but these threads have a tendency of getting locked pretty fast when you head down that road, i would prefer to see a list of confirmed working, (fat vs slim) home brew (pimp for example, or IRshell on the fats) and what the homebrew dose, what you may need to make it work,

like for example

pimp streamer. came with 0.90 and 2.01, running 3.80 m33-3 0.90 works, 2.01 dose not

snex9xtyl 0.4.2me wont work under 3.80 m33-3, requires a 1.50 back loader

daedalus works under 3.80 m33-3, sketchy sound, will not load under 1.50 back loader

GBA Emulator UO GPSP Ka works under *unknown* (need to find your own BIOS)

ect.

IMO names of 'homebrew' are ok, telling what is needed to get it working, ok. telling where to get true homebrew, ok, telling where to get emu's = google skill +1. if you have a name, you can find it. but you do it on your own terms...

i would also say that info about getting certain roms to run correctly should probably be marked taboo, becuase the answer google or buy the system.

just want to see a helpfull thread stay open instead of being taken to the depths by a lock.

Wer have been given a green light on posting Emulator links, as long as the thread doesn't start going down the road of pirating. Keep it clean, people!

I have added a guide section for converting DVD video to the PSP in MP4 format. I also received a PM yesterday, from an unfortunate reader. TUrns out he nuked his battery when attempting to open it with an xacto knife. Based on his experience, he had a recommendation on how to open the battery casing, and I have included that information in the guide under the battery mard-mod section. Sorry for the loss Cat1yst, please let us know if you continue to pursue getting CFW on your PSP, and we'll add you to the list of successful mods when you reach the end game!

I wont give up easily! :p
I should be getting a new battery monday....
I will try to take a video of my adventures to help you guys out

Oliver

Trace cut...but messily :p

Windows Vista will not work with this. There's maybe 1 or 2 guides telling you how to create a Pandora's Battery without the need of the computer( apart from transferring files to PSP.) but they are only for PSPs with custom firmware.
I'm sure at least one of your friends will have Windows XP, so ask them if you can use their PC and install TotalNewbi there.
EDIT: Look at the extra step in the guide, click the link and install that. The UPMS doesn't require a PC apart from transferring files.

Looking at the dudes link now...but hopping on my moms lappy when i get back for newbie

Ill keep you guys posted

Bingo.

PCB method cut and made a pandora's battery that way

Made magical memory stick through win xp and it worked like a charm
Battery cut filled with .07 lead from mechanical pencil and worked like a charm
3.90 m33-3 updating now

woot!:D:D:D

EDIT...I dropped my psp when i was updating to 3.90....looks like i get to do it again...W00T

All fixed now....got electrical tape all over it now :)

awesome Cat1yst! I'm adding you to the list in post $2 on page #1. Good job man. Sucks you nuked the first battery, but I guess that's how you learn, huh? Good to hear that you were successful in cutting the trac on the PCB, and not removing the entire pin. I had read that method before I did mine, but forgot about it when I was actually doing my mod. Wish I would have remembered, then I'd have two batteries.

Congrats again...now go get you some hombrew apps!

anyone else having emulation issues on PSX games? My copy of GT2 had issues until I changed the version of PopStationGUI that I was using to the version 3beta (link on 1st page). Anyone have comments on this?

look above at my post....what firmware are you running?

Here's some stuff to add:
List of working apps and emulators: http://forums.qj.net/f-psp-homebrew...de-the-ultimate-3xx-homebrew-list-131575.html
How to stream videos/ games from your computer to psp using USB: http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/about40419.html&p=1
Probably the best guide I've found for installing homebrew or unbricking your psp: http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/about119276.html

Note that the streaming of files/games to the PSP via USB currently requires 1.5 firmware on a fat, and WindowsXP. Windows Vista (any version) and PSP Slims are not supported.
As this is a PSP Slim guide, I will not be including that information in the resources section. If the supported models changes, I will certainly include it. I was intrigued by the idea of doing this myself, but the lack of CFW support that runs on the PSP Slim makes it useless for the purposes of this guide.

Thanks for the link regarding 3.xx compatible apps. I will likely add this information to the first post, as a resource. Note that I will list it as unsupported. I am not attempting to rip off the work of others. If we get confirmation of a working app here, we will list it. I will not accept the word of others, and sign off on it without testing it. I do appreciate the information though, as it gives me another collected resource to look through.

Third, PSP hacks does contain some really great information. Much of the general item knowledge in this thread was obtained, in part, from the information contained on those forums. As stated above, great resource, but I will not steal the information of others, or link to other discussion threads unless they contain information that I have personally tested and verified myself. That does not in any way discredit the PSP-Hacks information, but do not intend to send our forum members off to join somewhere else. What would be the point of putting it all together for the [H] crowd, if I did that?

I know this all may sound like I am ungrateful, and I assure you that that is not the case. I really do appreciate it. Anyone Googling "PSP Hacks" will obviously turn up the website of the same name, and it is a very good resource. I just wanted to give concise information for the [H] crowd in a format that I thought was thoroughly written and understandable. Thank you for your contribution. I will make sure to note your name in the field where I post the link.

updated apps/emulators section with information from kfc469, credit given. Thank you for the information!

One more thing. I have a ton of emulators, so i went searching for a way to bundle them all together a while ago, and found this: http://rapidshare.com/files/101077398/Emu_Loader.rar.html (about 45mb). It's just an app that you launch and then it lists out all of your emulators so they don't junk up your program list. Here's the link for more info on it: http://www.neoflash.com/forum/index.php/topic,4993.0.html and here's a screenshot:
snap0019wt2.png
.
I have personally used this for around 2 months now a love it. All the emulators are included in the download (includes Quake and Doom) as well. To put in your roms, just go into the folder for the pack, find the emulator you want, and put them in the proper ROM or GAME folder. All of the folder names match the name that comes up in the gray box on the right of the screenshot whenever you scroll to the emulator for a particular system. Enjoy.
