Best free email to use?...Im sick of companies being bought = new email address

Its getting pretty old, it seems every two years or so a company is bought out and you have to switch your ending email address to that provider,

mediaone.net
attbi.com
comcast.net
verizon.net


and now the latest will be myfairpoint.net, add to that a couple more in the list above i forgot the endings of its quite the list for about 8yrs worth.

Gmail? Yahoo? anything else worth considering as a permanent email address?
 
I'd say Gmail. Otherwise try Graffiti.net. I've had an account with them for about 4 years, and even if I'm inactive for a couple of months, I go back and it's still there.
 
I've had my Yahoo Mail account for 10 years now. Never had a problem with it. I hated when they stopped the POP3 support, but their web interface is pretty nice.
 
I started a gmail account, seems decent , got it working with outlook 2007, now i just gotta take the plunge and decide whether to start moving all my accounts over to it.

I was a Hotmailer from 99 to 2006. I made the switch to GMail, and never looked back. I love it!
 
do you guys use these internet accounts for everything ? Would you trust this stuff for like your banking/utilities and all that good stuff or stick with the IP for that stuff
 
I've got a Hotmail account I created about 3 days after they went live, and 3 Gmail accounts, as well as an account with my ISP (or two), never really had issues with any of them, even the Hotmail one.

If I were to recommend a free web-based email service, it's Gmail, hands down. And yes, I do everything with web-based email nowadays; I haven't installed or touched a POP/IMAP email client in oh... well... what, 12 years now. Simply no use for that stuff anymore.

I actually never use my ISP's address because it'd be a hassle if I changed ISPs or, like you said, they got bought (which happened a lot here back then, Cablevision -> MediaOne -> AT&T -> Comcast).

I use gmail as my primary email address and forward/consolidate all my email there. The email I give everyone is either my Gmail or my own website's email, but that just forwards to gmail.

I also have a hotmail account I use for dealing with Microsoft, and I get all that mail through Gmail too (POP3 access via Gmail).
 
Gmail for sure. Went to it three or four years ago and haven't looked back.
 
Gmail is fantastic. I've sadly been in the mediaone, attbi (this one I had forgotten about!), and now comcast realms, and gmail blows all of that BS out of the water.

Between labelling and being able to quickly search your emails, gmail is undoubtedly the way to go. I'd highly recommend getting away from outlook (I used to use thunderbird), and just log on to the website. Accessing emails from anywhere, anytime is a joy. The only concern with this is if you needed to get one of your emails from your machine but didn't have internet access, but... who does that? :p.
 
My gmail acct gets a ton of spam. Of course, I suppose it doesn't help that it was posted on a pubicly accessible site where it got harvested (not my choice, it was as a tutor for a community college).

I've been pretty happy with yahoo for everything else. Their spam filters are pretty good. I just look thru my junk folder before deleting to see if there's anything legit that got thru, and if so, tell it to allow.

I only use my ISP addy for my bank and paypal (makes it easier to detect real stuff vs. phishing attempts) and a few trusted friends.
 
other than the email address never changing, what is so good about it though? Would my emails basically never get deleted? I think verizon deletes them after 500-1000 get built up.

at home i would use outlook which seems to work fine with gmail, but logging into the website all the time from home would just be a hassle.

I guess i should read the gmail site to find out exactly why it is better.

Look at it this way: Google knows a hell of a lot more about security and running servers than you do. If you're comfortable storing information on your computer, you should be comfortable letting Google handle it in Gmail as well. Their servers are thousands times more secured than your home computer is.
 
I technically have 4 email addresses, three of which are personal use:

My work email, only accesible at work, not for personal use
My school email
A spam gmail account
A personal gmail account


The personal gmail account and school email are accessible through Outlook on my laptop. School email goes out to everyone, banking info, credit card stuff go to gmail. Every website I register for goes to the spam gmail account.

You might want to try Hotmail again when you get a chance. It's been totally redesigned within the last couple years and a lot of recent reviews have rated it better than GMail.
 
I like gmail mainly because of the pop3. I haven't ever had any trouble with it. It was great when I moved and didn't have to change email accounts. I've never even used the one my new isp gave me.
 
Gmail for majority of stuff, yahoo for almost nothing, and isp provided for spam.

I actually have like seven gmail accounts, but I only really use one of them...
