Enemy Territory: Quake Wars; Why don't you play it?

I've been playing this game pretty much since its release in Oct. last year. During that time I've seen the servers number and player numbers get smaller and smaller. Now its down to only about 230 ranked, no bots servers WORLDWIDE and averages maybe 2000 players a day WORLDWIDE. Thats just not alot of players currently playing on this planet.

I know that the game has gone through some changes and patches, but the basic concept and balanced (almost) warfare core of the game still exists. True even my play time decline with the much hated 1.4 patch, however, with the recent 1.5 patch (to fix all the 1.4 garbage) player numbers have not increased. This does not bode well for this game.

There hasn't been another online war game that's better than this game, including CS:S, any BF2 game and even Call of Duty 4 multiplayer. Quake Wars has it all, great fragging, aircraft, missions and classes, fire support, VOIP, plethera of munitions, deployables, and weaponry, stealth.

Some say this game is dying, and it might be true. But as fellow gamers, why don't you play this game? What about it is a turn-off? Balance, learning curve, maps? Please tell.

Games like this just aren't my thing. I learned that after playing BF2 for a while.

I actually liked ETQW but think it came out at the absolutely wrong time. IIRC, it came out right after UT3 and right before Crysis. I am guessing there were too many FPS's too choose from at the time. I think most waited for Crysis because most people spent money to fix up their PC to play that game. (which still wasn't enough in SLI)

at least that's what "my" reasoning was for not playing the full version. I had a great time in the demo and was about to purchase.. then Crysis was released.

I should have just bought ETQW's come to think of it. I didn't have one problem running it.

I have it. I haven't played it. I'm just not interested in it in any way.

Note: he's talking about avg online at once, not unique daily players.

ETQW is not dying. The numbers are similar to UT3, if not better.

Morning, noon, late at night (like 3am late), I have no problem finding at least 2 full/almost full servers with a <100 ping and decent match going.

Strangely I've noticed a lot more noobs playing the past week. I wonder if the console release actually spurred some PC sales due to the disappointing ports to PS360.

It wasn't that fun a game (to me, far too much bunny hopping), plus the doom3 engine just really isn't suited to large environments and vehicles and it shows.

Always part of the quake/ET flavor. Not everyone likes it. The game would be broken if you couldn't bunny hop. However it's not much of an advantage except avoiding sniper fire. Your accuracy greatly diminishes when you're moving. 3 head shots will drop anyone. It's a high skill game requiring quick reflexes.

Agree about the engine though. It was not that amazing by the time the game shipped. But after seeing fiascoes like Crysis MP, I'll stick with old tech and tried and true game design.

I hear Splash Damage hooked up with bethesda ?
I'd like them to do another sequel on the id tech 5 engine.

I need a good fps, been thinking about this one, interesting to hear peoples' thoughts, more please!

Been playing since it came out, absolutely fun game. If you don't care about the ranking there are new servers popping up running new custom maps to play on. Sure the graphics might be a bit dated, but it runs great and find a <100 server you will be happy with the play. 24 players, arty going off, vehicles all over the place...it's chaotic fun!

I played the beta a lot, but I just couldn't stand that engine, even when I was getting high fps after unlocking the fps cap, the game still felt bad. I have been thinking about trying it again though since they have patched it up a bit, but you can't really fix that engine.

I might buy it if I can find a good deal on it, it looks like a fun high skilled game with a steep learning curve.

EDIT: Only $30 on steam, buying it now and add me on xfire if you want to play. Xfire = sovernsectwarren

I think the game is just plain bad. I got the game for free and was disappointed. Amazed a game with such bad graphics would come with a video card. The trailer for the game looked good too.

I played it and liked it but didn't feel like purchasing it. I had already purchased other games and it for some reason didn't feel good enough for purchasing. Enemy territory was great and free. Maybe if it was just called Quake Wars I wouldn't feel like I was purchasing a game that should of been free.

Heres my reason, I played quake 4, and it turned me off, because of my fond memories of quake 2 and 3, which is a direct result why i didn't buy ET:QW, Then when it was apparently 9.99 at target, both of the targets here didn't even have a spot for the game, let alone the game itself. I don't want to pay 30 dollars on steam for a game that I am unsure of.

II'm grabbing the demo right now.

I just don't like the way it feels. Hard to explain. Just the alien vs army guy, and the sounds. the maps.. Just didn't it like it too good. Plus I played maybe a month or so, and then for somereasone couldn't play on my online account anymore after a reinstall.. So I just said F**k it. Plenty of other good games out there.

Be advised the demo probably no longer reflects the full game's true online gameplay environment. There's been numerous patches since release. I doubt there will be anyone to play with, but you can try it against the bots to get an idea.

good to know, i really just want to see basics like how it runs more or less, what the gameplay is like.

That's the problem. I would personally like more near full joinable servers. I see alot of the same people all the time, and that gets boring. You can look at the roster before joining a game and already know what to expect half the time. The core ETQW aren't going anywhere, I simply want to see more growth and support.

BTW I play on your server from time to time. You definitely love your Obliterator. ;)

DarkOps
DarkProdigy <--- both are my in game accounts.

Very true, and I wonder if this game is "too hard" for the inexperienced and casual FPS'r.

I think I've seen you. Your in game name is Stereophile right? Or is that someone else...

Well, play either RL guy or engineer most of the time, with a little medic or covert ops thrown in...:D:p;)

Nevermind, I will not be buying this game. It feels too broken and I don't like the whole click right to scope in deal, it makes it feel too easy to get headshots.

Not as easy as you might think....I've had snipers miss me all the time. Plus the smoke/ ion trail is a dead giveaway to their location for that nice follow-up shot.... :D

I played it during the beta and wasn't impressed at all. yes its a beta but you can always get a good feel for a game. the vechiles were horrible and the guns were pretty flaky. and the movement was glitchy.

I remember it being talked about on the BF2 forums that it was going to blow away BF2, blah blah. look how that turned out:rolleyes:

You do realize that this is all an opinion, right?

My problem with ET:QW was always the fact that I wanted Enemy Territory, not BF3. I have never liked a multiplayer FPS with vehicles, and it especially doesn't work well in ET:QW. If the game had been more like it's predecessor, W:ET, then perhaps I would have bothered to play it more.

I didnt mind the jeeps and small transport vehicles, but the tanks and flyers were dumb IMO. I did play during the beta from Quakecon up to launch, with the same map O_O and got burned out. Not much changed in that whole period, I enjoyed aspects but as others have said it felt too much like a bad BF3 to me. It had potential and there were aspects of it I really really enjoyed (artilery from afar was extreemly fun lol) but in the end it was just the same thing every time.

I think my total play time for this is about 9 hours since I bought it. It's a good game, it's just Team Fortress 2 is much more fun, and there are a lot more people playing.. I was also unable to run it for about 2 months because of a bug with the Steam version and XP SP3

I think it took too long to get released, and is suffering now because of its competition

I play it almost every day and it's by far the best multiplayer game I have ever played, mainly because I like teamwork, which all other MP games out there lack.
And the community is not dying at all. I never had problems finding a good server to play. In fact I have problems getting in to some servers, because they are usually full (I usually try to get a server where my ping doesn't exceed 100).
This game is certainly NOT for the casual BF players. I played BF1942 and BF2 and the demo of BF2142 and Quake Wars is much more fun and at the same time much more difficult to learn. To me, it was easy, because the roots of the original ET are still in ET:QW and I played ET to death.

People that said they didn't like it, most likely didn't even gave it a chance. Probably got killed easily, by experienced players and gave up. Well, QW requires a lot of skill and tactics on the field. Not to mention that if you're just good at killing people, you won't win any games for your team. QW is a true team based game. If you don't work with your team, to achieve the goals, you won't win any map.

Also, you can add me to your list of friends in the game. My nick is the same as here.

I most definitely think that's it. It's way too hard for the casual player and even BF players. Remember that SD even launched a patch (I think 1.2 or 1.3) that came with a small tutorial for each new mission that appeared on the battle field, that went as far as explaining in detail, something as simple as calling in a turret.

And Stereophile is DethDealer in QW :)

Funny question.
I installed it on my rig when I built it, never registered it.
Forgot it was even installed until you posted this thread.
I'm usually playing BF2 or studying.

I own a copy that I got for free with an eVGA 8800GT 512, but honestly, with so many other games around, I haven't gotten to a lot of ones I own, including ET:QW, although I did log about 25-30 hours total with it and loved it. Really just a matter of not enough time to play all the games. ET:QW is a great game, but I just haven't gotten into it too heavily. I do think for the casual FPS player or even intermediate one that it's fairly complex, but I had little issue in getting up to speed with it.

I try and keep away from online gaming. It's addictive and time consuming. I can moderate my gaming with single player games much easier.

I've seen what happened to my best friend and his addiction to BF2 and BF 2142 and the resentment his wife now holds against him. I don't wanna go there, EVER!

I was a BETA tester for this game, I don't play it because its bloody terrible.

I played first Enemy territory a lot.
But the new version didn't seem worth buying to me - the weapons were too futuristic and whole tech was not intuitive.
If you pleated first ET you knew everything from start but here you had to do some research to even know which weapons are what.
And since i only played demo it didn't have kind of helps or tutorials so I gave up.

I only wanted a fun and casual game becouse i got bored with more serious gaming after CS 1.5 and DoD. And ET was just that you jumped in had a lot of fun and when gifted with MP 40 you knew it will be good at short distance :D

unless it's drastically changed since the beta, the game was WAY to easy and WAY to quake DM with illusionary large maps, bad sound, and the same old feel.

In the beta, you could run around with a pistol like you you playing QUake 1 DM and just own the board (except vs a vehicle) with no skill required.

What bothered me the most about this game is they had the chance to take the crown in the large scale FPS combat genre and they failed miserably. They copied so many aspects from BF. They had a clean slate to work with and I think they could have done so much more and made it stand out but they didn't which was sad.
