How powerful is the X2’s Xenon?

I have been wanting to ask this for a while, but never got around to posting it ^-^.

The X2 has IBM (PPC) Xenon CPU with 3 cores which consist of 165 million transistors. It operates at 3.2 GHz. Now, compare this with the Intel’s E8200, which has around 400 million transistors and operates around 2.6 GHz.

We all know higher clock frequencies don’t mean faster performance; because all we are doing is shoving more electrons into a semi-conductor. That’s why multi-core was developed. But, what about higher transistor count? Wouldn’t this mean more operations per clock? So effectively, are the new E8XXX dual-core series more powerful than the X2’s tri-core Xenon?

X2? Do you seriously mean the Xbox 360? Because no one, ever, calls that the X2.

Its like comparing apples to oranges. 360 proc's are designed strictly for gaming, not multitasking compared to regular cpu's which are designed to multitask. If you want to compare them, i would say by default that the E8200 has better performance (considering all it can do at once). But, if were strictly talking gaming, then maybe the xenon will come out better. maybe.

But I though the Xenon was a general purpose CPU, similar to the ones found on Mac.

XBox 360? I've never heard anyone call it "X2" - mostly, b/c that's a silly thing to call it. XBox 2, maybe. X2, no way.

I always hated the name Xbox. But X1, X2, X2 seems a lot better. Also, the X, which meant to represent Direct X remains intact.

It's not. Each core is a simplied in-order, 2 thread processor. Despite the 3.2GHz speed, it compares somewhat unfavorably to a G5 at half the frequency. This is a test of the PS3, which has one PPE (same core as the Xenon, but only one instead of three): http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/2007/05/playstation-3-performance-may-2007/

A mobile Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz is roughly 3x faster than the PPE in the PS3. http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/2007/05/macbook-performance-may-2007/ The Xenon won't get perfect scaling, but at least in Geekbench 2 (integer and FP benchmarks) the Xenon won't be faster than a Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz. It wouldn't be surprising if each Xenon core was roughly equal to a Celeron 420.

Looks like both CPUs (Xenon and Cell) aren't as powerful as I originally thought.

I've never heard of the 360 being refferred to as X2 and hope I never do again. I think "360" works perfectly. X2 and I think of AMD processors or X-Men 2

That's just the PowerPC core (PPE) of the Cell chip being tested. The SPEs (other cores) in Cell are very fast. The in-order, 2 thread PPC derived cores are pretty weak considering the clock speed.

The Intel Atom has the same problem for nearly the same reason. What counts though is that it's fast enough for the task. I see very few argue that the XB360 or PS3 are underpowered.

The power of the PS3's Cell processor can be seen in the amazingly fast rate at which it runs Folding@Home. The fact that it can do certain tasks extremely quickly, however, doesn't translate to it necessarily being fantastic on a games console where multi-threading is a real challenge and many individually-weak cores seems like a bad idea. I'd like to see how much utilisation Cell really gets in games.

The main problem with the PS3 is the memory allocation. If they’ve implemented UMA, like on the X2, it would be much easier to take advantage of.

Regardless, that is just you making up a name for something, which makes it harder for other people to discuss.

i would slap anyone speaking with me that refers the to 360 as an X2. it took me 3 posts to realize WTF you were talking about.

X2 is the AMD dual-core Athlon64
edit: im sure X2 can be used to describe or name a number of other products and ideas, but it definitely doesnt mean Xbox 360

Look, I know you're trying really hard to make "X2" the socially acceptable norm for refferring to the xbox 360, but it isn't going to happen. Enough already, it sounds lame and you've missed the boat. The first person who coined the phrase "360" beat you to the punch and had a better idea to boot.

well...now you know what I mean;)

Stop calling it the x2, the only thing that even remotely makes sense is the athlon x2, since that is part of the model name. No one else calls the 360 a x2, all you are doing is confusing people, and to be honest it sounds lame too.

I can call it whatever I wish. It's a free country after all, and so is the net. And no, I’m not enforcing the name, it's just my preference.

Anyway, can't believe you guys are pissed off by something simple a name. Geez get a life.

PS: It wasn't like my OP was completely vague. There are several and numbers and words which completely gives it away.

Back to the OQ

you started this shit stain of a thread and you're telling us to 'get a life'......really?

ROFL :D

yes, it was vague, completely, and no numbers of words gave it away, esp. given the context, that is, the forum u posting at - this is Intel forum, not an xbox forum, m-kay?

I didn't start anything LOL

All I asked was a comparison of the Xenon to an Intel based CPU. And I got the answer by some intelligent people.

However, its people like you who picked a word and a number from my thread and started this pile of shit.

So yes, I stand by my post. Get a ******* life. Or just join the FOX news network or the Republican Party.

If it was vague, then you clearly don’t know the X2's Xenon processor, which means, you should’ve just passed this thread, instead of acting like a complete ********.

It's a metaphor

He means, like in a free country, the internet also allows the term free speech and opinions of any user regardless of their true intelligence.

Sarcasm is wasted on some people... That post was also in response to you, not the post above me. ;)

am i missing something?.....aren't you the op? you did start this thread right? and you started it with a term that no one uses to describe the xbox 360 cpu. you called it an x2 because...you though it made your balls hang a little lower, who knows. then you get a little shit for it, so what. people get shit on for anything on the net. and your response to getting shit on is to tell everyone to 'get a life'.....what a fantastic rebuttal. this part about the fox news/republican party; whats that supposed to mean? you're the poor enlightened liberal, just trying to get his life-affirming ponderings out to the world, and we're a bunch of oppressive conservatives trying to stifle you. wow, you sure take your self seriously. oh, my friend, when the revolution comes you're the kind we strap bombs to.:D

Sarcasm encoded on written media/format is never a good idea, simply because it can be easily misinterpreted.

Sarcasm should only be used vocally when you’re with a group of people who you identify with. Simple logic really;).

did someone say shit stain

Don't worry it's all covered I'm going to call the 360 the X2 now too so it's all good.

But really xbox is ok X would have been better, and Xbox 360 is just stupid as hell. I mean 360 represents a full circle or returning to the same point in a life cycle so technicly the xbox is the xbox 360.

I don't think the X2 could really be compared to PC processors but the X2 is probably faster that the X2.

Is there point in arguing with a closed minded fool? After all, a person who argues with a fool is a fool.

To this date, you haven’t answered my question. So your options are invalid. Too bad you’re behind the computer, because in the real word, you won’t even last a minute.

I do however can promise you one thing. When the revolution does come, you won't be there to witness it.

super, you're awesome, i am staggered by your intellect.

UUmmmm I don't know if you know this but they Renamed the revolution to the Wii. I'm am surprised you didn't know that the dam thing is selling like hot cakes.

hehehe shit stain.

Next thing you know my PS3 is called the PS360 -_-

BC my PS3 made a come-back with BluRay and better titles, oh-snap! :D

Any reason why you decided to put emphasis on the words SEMI and DUAL-CORE?

and yeah... Don't call it X2... And don't use that "free-country" argument anywhere, you only get to use that argument once in your teenage years... How does this sound: we all are living in a free-country also and have the right to call you annoying for using the word X2 instead of XBox360.

Too bad you’re behind the computer, because in the real word, you won’t even last a minute.

Sigh... Yeah... This does really show the level of your intellect and maturity.

I recall reading, I don't remember where, that just the one PPE is equal to an Pentium IV at 1.53ghz. The xenons PPE is somewhat beefier then the ps3's from what I recall.

And X2 should never be used to describe the xbox 360, be it in writing or verbally. That didn't stop you though.

Logic obviously failed you when you thought I actually ment that the Internet is a country.

OMG this is just too funny!
in a sad way, come on guys, stop picking on the 13 year old, he just made a bet with a friend and now is trying to prove hes right. all of his highly intelligent and witty remarks point to that. (well, the 13 year old part)

But arguably, the Cell is the single most powerful CPU out there. Unfortunately it is very difficult to program for and is already old by tech standards.

X2 = Athlon X2, end of story. you want proof? google "X2"
Search results:
X-men 2
X2: the Threat - hehe Xenon is an alien race in that game, judging by the title given, i thought this was about a game, and for the life of me could not understand why it was in the Intel forum.
Athlon 64 X2 - oh look at that.
