Top 10 most terrifying enemies

What?! No mention of the Crimson Zombies from the GC version of Resident Evil?

Trying to run across a hallway and squeeze through the next door with a few of those running at you is pretty scary without any ammo :p

yeah, but I could count the amount I killed on one hand... (even If I lost three of my fingers)

You missed a few. There are probably ten or so of the things throughout the game and that really is the right level for being scary. Rare enough that you relax just in time to stumble across another one of the bastards.

This guy!

These cocksuckers.

Every time you heard the bastards start a charge, you'd end up blazing away with an entire mag.

I agree!

Also... the first time I saw a Cyber Demon Lord from Doom, I just about ran out the room. *shhhhhh- THUMP! ...shhhhhhhhhhhhh- THUMP!*

Also bander snatchers from Resident Evil were pretty terrifying.

the fast zombies in HL2 scared the shit outta me the first time i saw one flying toward me. same with the cloaked baton dudes from FEAR.

The spider bots in Deus Ex, anyone? My flesh crawls every time I hear them in-game ... the sound alone scares me shitless.

I can't say as they are necessarily scarry, but I can't stand any of the goblins in Oblivian Elderscrolls. They keep trashing on my wood elf chic.

I don't usually play scary games, but these are the ones that I remember being freaked out about:

1) The first time I saw the Licker in Resident Evil 1
2) The first time I heard the manhacks in HL2
3) Pretty much all of Ravenholm scared the SHIT out of me, but especially the first time I saw the fast zombie
4) Alma. Come on. Obviously.

what game is that from ?

Lickers werent in RE1. But while we're on the subject of RE1, in the original version (the one w/o autoaim) Hunter duos were fucken scary. Fighting them was so not in your favor. They would leap on reaction to you raising the gun. You couldnt shoot them out of the air. There was usually no room in the corridors to avoid the jump in and it would take like half life. And if one of them landed behind you, you're pretty much dead. It was especially bad with Chris since you hardly had any inventory space for healing items. Very unforgiving fight.

I think the bees are much more frightening than the dogs in paperboy (from the link on the first page of this thread).... or death even, death is in paperboy, fuck the dogs man

The Cyber Demon in Doom 1-2, i mean, once he awoke you could hear his footsteps anywhere in the level! It freaked me out when i was 4 years old playing with my dad and it still freaks me out at 18.

Oh, and this fish creature in Half-life. jumping into that resovior and never knowing where that SoB was until you turned around.

Oh shieet, here I was humming along in this thread, even passing the previous mention of the Cyber Demon until you mentioned that critical detail, the footsteps. That was scary as hell

Somone said the Yeti from that skiing game, that thing always scared me because youd only see it for a few seconds before you toast, I always thought I COULD get away but was never ABLE to, looking back i think thoose bastards made it impossible to get by him.

in hl2 ep 2 you fight the green guardian and hes chasing you throughout the level, every time you got close to a hole to sneak into i knew he was less than a foot behind me. Gave you the same feeling as knowing the seamonster from hl1 was right on your ass.

Im currently playing "Pnembura" or whatever it is called im only 30 mins into it and it has scared me more than any other game Ive played so far, I still dont know EXACTLY what is down here with me but I can tell you whatever it is, is scaring the shit out of me.

ok I didn't like that either, although I haven't played HL1 though. Don't know why.

I'll play black mesa when it comes out. But I'll be sure to play HL1. I really enjoyed HL2.

i really doubt black mesa source will ever come out. i don't think the mod team realized the scope of re-creating an entire game.

IMO anything pales in comparison to the things you encounter in Penumbra. Even S.T.AL.K.E.R. with the damn bloodsuckers. The setting makes them god damn terrifying.

Judging by the looks of things BM: Source will be released alongside They Hunger: Lost Souls, Duke Nukem Forever, and Charles Manson.

A shame really. I'd love to play They Hunger: Source.

While I'm not a hardcore gamer, just a Quake fanatic over the course of 1, 2, and 3 (4 sucks, period, but then again, it wasn't really an id Software product either, go figure), but the one most memorable moment ever in my game playing over the decades has got to be in the original Unreal - not Unreal Tournament, etc, but the original Unreal game.

There's a part not too far from the beginning when you're deep inside a mountain going through tunnels that loop around like a spiral, taking you to the very end of the tunnel where the power center happens to be, you throw two switches to disable a force field, then make your way back out. But there's where it gets interesting.

As you're leaving, you get to a long narrow stretch of corridor and click... you hear something. Then you notice a barrier of sorts has appeared that blocks your forward path, and of course you make your way back to the other end of the corridor and click, you hear it again. As soon as you round the corner you find yet another barrier. So you know something's about to happen...

Then, like it was taken from some bad B-movie, the lights in the corridor - from the point farthest away - start turning off. One at a time, with a loud "thunk" 'thunk" "thunk" sound effect that, when using the old 3D soundcards in those days (back in what, 1999 or so) with the Aureal soundshaping was freakin' scary as hell. The reverb and the sound effect itself just got louder as the lights directly overhead went out and then the outage continued on around the corner.

Obviously leaving you in absolute darkness.

Whip out a flare and toss it, but that didn't really do much. Turn on the flashlight but there's nothing to see. And then you hear it... and I mean "it" this time.

Lights out, the flare burns out, you turn off the flashlight to save battery power, and then you hear that "growl" sound and wonder what the hell is about to---

And then the Skaarj Warrior comes out of an opening in the wall and wastes you. :D The growl, the lighting effects, all of it, man I swear I have never ever been "scared" in a game before but that damned moment in time - and it only happened that one first time I experienced that corridor - is something I'll never forget. Sent freakin' chills up and down my spine, gave me goosebumps, had the hair on my skin standing up straight I kid you not.

Absolutely awesome game all around. The other aspect that got me was the AI that Steven Polge whipped up. Polge, creator of the infamous Quake "Reaper Bot" which provided hours of inhuman death and carnage fun for many people, was hired on to handle the AI for Unreal's Skaarj race and he did a damned impressive job with it. They actually learned your style of play and then learned to counteract it and kick you sorry ass all over the place.

There was a level later on in the game where you're in another series of circular corridors, with rooms (circular rooms, go figure) that each housed different functions. You'd have to go to one, complete a task on the ship's computer, get the weapons/health/ammo, then move to another, etc. What made this so unique was as I was collecting all the "stuff" I ended up hearing that damned "growl" once again and knew the fit was about to hit the shan...

So I decided to barricade myself in one room that had a lot of weapons and ammo. I'd stay in there, and as the door opened I'd just waste the creatures as they tried to get in. Well get this:

They learned what I was doing, seriously. The creatures would taunt me by running up to the door to open it, stand in the doorway for a split second, then turn around and step back while one of the other creatures behind him opened fire on me inside the room. I freaked out when that happened, but it wasn't over yet.

They would sacrifice themselves to keep the door open! One would run up, open the door and step just a bit forward to block the door open and I'd waste it - the body would fall in the doorway and jam the door open, at which time several Skaarj would raid the room hoping to get at me. Man I swear, I have NEVER played anything since then that gave off the same type of AI that almost seemed more than human by how it reasoned out the process to get me.

Did they end up getting me? No, I actually wacked the 20 or so Skaarj that were on that level, and relatively quick too. But I made a fatal mistake... you'll love this.

I saved that level before I started it, so I could always do it again if I chose to, I had a habit of saving all new levels as soon as I got to them. What does that mean to this little story? Well, I thought the way the Skaarj had tried to get to me was so cool, I decided to try it again and see how they'd change knowing the game's AI did truly learn over time.

That was the fatal mistake, because I didn't save the game at the point after the first run-through where I actually beat them and moved on. And because of that, as soon as I restarted the level from the beginning, I'd have to beat them all again to move on.

Well, it took about 47 attempts to do it again. :)

46 times I tried to kill those damned bastiges the same way, barricading myself in the room with tons of weapons and ammo, 46 times they learned even more ways to get in and waste me, 46 more times the game learned from my mistakes, 46 more times I got pissed for being stupid enough to not save the game after the first defeat, 46 more times I watched them sacrifice themselves to kill me dead.

Boy that was fuckin' great gameplay I swear. Nothing else like it since, either...

/me looks over at his Unreal CD and thinks about giving that game a run-through again... who knows :)

Wow, 6 pages and nobody's mentioned Warmech from FF1?

It's not that Warmech was scary looking or anything, but if you ran into him on the bridge to Tiamat, you pretty much just hit reset because you were going to die.

Headcrabs in HL/HL2
Toxic Headcrabs in HL2

Cherubs in Doom 3

Octabrain in Duke Nukem 3D...probably the only thing to make me come close to crapping my pants

God, my friend and I were kinda drunk and decided to play this last week..... i swear we screamed and dropped the wiimote like 10 times, and when the first one of these came alive .....shit. Ridic. The dogs also scared the hell out of me.

Dude, I totally forgot about him until you mentioned it. He has to be the one enemy that is above other that freaked me out. Even the whole level, Ragnarok, leading up to him freaked me out, as Max Payne is discovering all the books he read and the things he writes about..... :shudders: That was probably one of the creepiest levels in a game that I've ever played.

worse for me was the damn crying baby mazes. lets say i had been smoking something, and i couldnt fuckin take that shit. was terrible.

Wow...

I can't believe no one mentioned the aliens from Enemy Zero; maybe because it was for Sega Saturn and no one played . Hands down the scariest enemy ever. You can't see them until you kill or are killed by them. I can still remember the eery beeping of the gieger counter like alien detector. Beep...Beep...Beep...AAHHH!

Also the splicers in Bioshock are pretty terrifyig too.

I agree with the polygon monster from Out of This World. That thing creeped me out...you couldn't shoot it so you had to run...and it would always stalk you.

Apart from that I also liked the Resident Evil 1 enemies, the STALKER invisible guy posted above and anything in Penumbra (especially when you can't shoot at them!).
