Why buy a new case?

I've noticed that quite a lot of you guys here buy new cases quite often. When you buy a new case, what do you do with your old case then? Just read about someone who changed case from a Stacker 830 to a newer case (don't remember which).

Sorry if my English is bad, I'm from Sweden.
 
For me... I get bored of one case so I change out into another. I have several computers so sometimes I move the old case to another machine. I try to keep one spare since I build a lot of machines... or I just sell them... Cases are like fashion... sometimes there is just something that looks nicer...
 
I started to build computers again after 5 notebook years. Since last year october, i bought 4 computer cases. First Antec Solo, then Lian Li PC-A09, then Lian Li PC-V1000 (so far all for one desktop PC) and now PC-A17 for server. Now after i finally settled about cases, i sold the PC-A09 and Solo. It was a money loss for me (the sell value of PC-A09 and Solo gave me a price of PC-A17), but it was worth it, now i know what i really need :).

Imho if you don't have computer to put into it, it's better to sell them ASAP - even if they lost value, those cases still have the warranty (even if i don't see any use for warranty in this case), thus their price is a bit higher than without warranty.

i was looking to sell my old TT Tsunami, but after i modded the side window to accommodate a 120mm fan, i doubt anyone would want it. That, and many of the screws are missing lol

Yeah, that is the lesson i learned with Solo - don't mix screws into one box, keep them in separate packages :). Otherwise you are needed to find the right screws etc when selling :-D.

And yeah, impossibility to sell the case after modding is one of the reasons which keeps me away from watter cooling (other one is that it is pretty expensive).
 
I think it's of a number of factors. Some are for looks wile others are for function. Function can mean a lot of things like size, cooling (air, water, phase, etc) placement of internals, bays, ect. ect.

for instance.

I had a centurion 5 case. wile i did like this case for the most part, I thought it was missing on some. then cooler master came out with the centurion 590 not long ago. the 590 hit on a lot of things the cent. 5 was miss on, and incorporated some thing I was liking on some other cases like the CM Stacker and 630s imo the Cent. 590 is almost a perfect case. I like it a lot, more so then I ever did with my cent 5
 
I don't really buy that many cases, but when I do it's mostly to replace an older case that's low quality or doesn't have sufficient airflow, or just when I see a new case that I think would work well for me. Most of the time, I keep the old case and switch an older box into it, and I either sell or get rid of the case from the older box depending on the condition or quality. If I don't have another computer to use the old case for, I sell it, chuck it, or give it away if I know anyone who needs a case.
 
main reason why i decided to get my TJ07 was b/c of the size and looks of the case. i only wish that i had put more effort into searching for a case the first time around.
 
I kept a Lian-Li PC-6085B through several PC rebuilds. I had it powdercoated, and with the two red-LED strips in the front, it was just too good to part with.... Until I decided to do a major upgrade to my watercooling system. Now my system resides in a PC-A16 (also powdercoated), in which I have cut many holes for cable routing and to accommodate a bottom-mounted 3x120mm radiator.

The PC-6085B is still around. Eventually I will finish reworking the new dragon-shaped-window side panel and put it on the A16, then the old dragon-shaped-window side panel will be reunited with the 6085B and I'll sell them together...

In other cases (har har), relatives and friends and neighbors for whom I've built systems, they get new cases either for aesthetics, or because I told them their old case couldn't handle the new system they wanted (poor cooling). Usually they give me the old case, and I throw it in a metal-recycling bin on the way home, 'cause it was ugly and/or bad anyway.
