Xigmatek HDT-S1283

The heatsink cut me DEEEEEP, it's very sharp. I also have a A05 running a push-pull setup. The xigmatek is getting fresh air from outside the case to the heatsink, then the stock fan is pulling air/pushing air over the ram towards the hdd and powersupply which is then pushed out by the front fan. Overall this gives me excellent temperatures.
 
I ordered the original s1283 over the red scorpion. I'd rather not pay for LED fans, in my experience they crap out within a couple weeks, plus it's slower rpm..the reviews i've seen have them at identical temps too.

The scorpion had a free-shipping discount w/ Hardforum (Under [H]ot Deals)

Otherwise I probably would have gone with the regular version... in the end I pay $35 for this, and like $5 for my 775 mounting kit...
 
There's more to the method than just the two lines. I strongly recommend reading the entire article: Best Thermal Paste Application Methods. The methods discussed in the article will further increase performance.
I read the entire article. I used their method for the S1283 for 3 days, the 3 lines for 3 days, and the single line on the hs for 3 days. The single line runs cooler in my tests.

I will say that I did fill the gaps on all 3 tests.
 
Has anyone gotten the bolt through kit from Xigmatek? and if so about how long does it take for them to get it to you? It happens that I ordered a 1283 but didn't read about the necessity of the bolt through kit over push pins. I'd like to build this weekend, (read as: GF is out of town) so if Xigmatek can't get it to me by the end of the week, is there a place I can rush order it?
 
sidewinder computer has the tr 775 bolt-thru kit for $5 plus around $1.50 for USPS 1st class shipping. Arrived to me in 2 days, plus USPS delivers on Sat.
 
My 1st class stuff from Sidewinder takes about 2 days... order on monday, get it wednesday, ordered another thing on thursday and got it monday (but I ordered pretty late thursday night)

So yea... :D I'm going to be shopping at sidewinders a lot more for the sheer fact of cheap shipping. It's really annoying when you go to order something small that's not available locally, and you get charged $7-8 for shipping...

My 1283 is keeping my Q6600 at 3.4Ghz right around 50c at full load so the 1284 will have no problems with it.

They are s775 compatiable, but they use the stock Intel push-pin system that some people really don't like to use. If you get the bolt-through kit you can replace the push-pins.
 
Re: the TR 775 bolt thru kit, I assume it's this one... It's OOS atm. FWIW though, even the push pin arrangement works fine, keeps my quad @ 3.6/1.475v at well under max temps. I was seeing 55-60c range, 2xF@H SMP load, altough I saw on the order of 63c or so the other day when it the the mid-high 80s (F) here in town. I'd still feel more confident in having the bolt thru mount though, it's not as if I'm swapping CPUs often or anything to worry about the extra effort in mounting.

I'm assuming the "free" bolt kit provided by Xigmatek includes the backplate as well, as the pay-for-play-yet-unavailable as of now option has one? I got my 1283 about a month too late though, but ~$7 shipped once Sidewinder gets back in stock would be easy enough an extra expense to swallow. With anything that has such a high mounting pressure, I would not go without a backplate anymore... After killing my 1st IP35 Pro the other week, I was greeted w/ a fairly massive bowing of the PCB when I removed the board from the case (the Apogee block that I have is the original revision w/out the blackplate).

[edit] Oh, one thought on the upcoming 1284.. I wonder if the quad pipe arrangement will be worth it?... Ie: the layout of the pipes cover the heatspreader completely, or not, thus perhaps not making full use of the extra pipe, whereas the 1283 seems to be fine in that respect...
 
Just remember to not use the stock thermal paste with normal copper heat pipes, that silicon type crap can corrode the copper. Use AS5 or AC MX-2 and as for the nickel/copper issue, I'd rather have copper for better heat conduction.
 
Yeah this thing rocks, just installed it with mx-2 and tr bolt thru kit. Dropped temps 10c right away. Only difficulty was screwing in the first two spring screws, you have to let the HS just sit on the cpu, letting the paste get all out of line because its not secured and its moving around while you work. But its doing fine, not as big as i thought so it wasn't any problem fitting it in a cm590.
 
OK you eager little beavers, Benchmark Reviews has talked with Xigmatek this afternoon, and they have received two of the Achilles S1284 CPU coolers. We'll be getting one of them, and the test results will be published ASAP!

For this product, we will test with the standard push-pin clips as well as with the new Crossbow mounting system... and of course use vertical and horizontal mounting positions just as we did with the recent Best CPU Cooler Performance - Q1 2008 article.
 
My contact hasn't received pricing yet, and the unit won't be available for sale for at least another month.
 
Agreed that this thing rocks. Dropped my Q6600's load temp 20c at load over the stock heatsink (70 down to 50). I used the single line across the CPU and filled the gaps in the heatsink base prior to mounting it. I'm using the TR bolt thru kit from SideWinders and AS5.

Anyone know if the Thermalright AM2 Bolt-thru kit works for the S1283? Not feeling very confident with the tool-less clip method...

Yeah go for it, I'm not anything close to an authority, but when I had the AMD clip deal it seemed pretty good. As much as I like the Intel C2D's I just wish Intel would scap the IMHO push/pin crap. :mad:

OBTW From everything I've read and heard the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 is one dynamite cooler ;)

 
The fan that comes with the Xigmatek is inaudible over the other fans in my Rocketfish tower. The other fans are 3 Lian Li 120mm fans and a the stock fan on a 9600GT. The Xigma stock fan is PWM as well, so you can have your motherboard keep the speed low unless you need it.

So basically unless you already silenced everything else in your PC, I would not worry about it. Its a 120mm fan so it spin slow compared to running a 92mm for a CPU cooler.
Going to have to disagree with you there, the stock fan was extremely loud compared to the rest of my computer (which being in a Lian-Li PC-65B case, has two 80mm fans spinning at low speed right in front).

had to replace it with a Yate Loon, other than that, excellent cooler. :D

I'm assuming you got a faulty fan, because it would have to be one really lousy 120mm to be louder than a pair of 80mm's. Also I'm hoping they will sell the new version with a bolt-thru kit included, or at least the option for it. Nice looking unit, and for the price/performance you just can't beat it.
 
Very solid cooler. I haven't noticed much of a noise increase since switching from stock, but I don't have the best hearing and I never really have too much trouble toning my case noise out when gaming or watching TV or what just browsing. It's a bit louder, but not much IMO.

Keeps my Q6600 at 32-35% idle and 45-47% load at 3.0gHz depending on the ambient temp in my apartment.

Easy to install with bolt thru kit. For price and peformance I'd say that it a great deal. I paid $36 shipped for mine, however I have seen deals as low as $26 before.

I think that the S1284 is expected to retail near $50-60, which isn't so bad when you consider the combined cost of the TRUE along with an aftermarket fan... and the shipping for each.
 
Why would you be excited about the 1284 when it did worse than the 1283's in that review... ?
 
Has anyone ever fitted a small 40mm fan directly onto the aluminium base of the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 to have air blowing onto it, to see if that would help with cooling the cpu a little more ? (In the same styling as fitting a 40mm fan to some boards northbridge/southbridge)

Or possibly managed to fit a chipset heatsink to it by some way to see if it would bring temps down a little more ?

Would be interested to know if anyone has before I buy another 40mm fan and try it myself for the sake of it.

anyone have a copy of the rebate form for the Xigmatek heatsink? I'm talking about the $5 rebate for the Red Scorpion.... there is a $5 rebate there currently for the RS but it is only for when you purchase it from 5/7 to whatever date they have it; I bought mine before 5/7

Well this is another huge disappointment. It seems they were more worried about looks than performance. I had a few builds waiting on this updated version and now I'll just be ordering some 1283's instead.

Does anybody else think this company lacks urinalysis testing for the people that worked on the 1284? Why would the updated version not cool AT LEAST as well as the old? I had high hopes for this model, but now I can't help but to think that these guys are idiots. Perhaps someone will enlighten me on whatever it is that I am missing here. Why would anybody pay for this version for any other reason that it looks "cooler", because it damn sure isn't thermal wise.
