GTA...Overhyped, your opinions?

SOMEONE JUST TELL ME:

What happened to taxi driver mission, ice cream truck mission, police mission, car training missions, flight school missions and the other missions that you had in gta sa?

Also, how in the hell can i get a gun?

You get a gun automatically in the game during the normal progression of the story.

Patience grashoppa.

If you're looking for a gun just get in any cop car, you'll pocket the shotgun they have in between the seats. Its been that way since GTA3.

Overhyped before release? Not even close compared to many high profile games.

Overhyped after release? Absolutely...but mostly by overzealous reviewers and fanboys who only spent a few minutes in the game causing mayhem before they told everyone how great it is.

I agree that the graphics are disappointing...using the PS3 version on a 1080p plasma I definitely was shocked by the blurriness, shimmering and blockiness of some of the graphics. Getting past that, I do like the premise better than San Andreas but in going for more "realism" I think Rockstar sucked some of the charm out of the game. So far the missions have been straightforward and boring but I think they'll get better as the game progresses....I certainly hope my driving gets better because it took me three tries to complete the first mission without trashing my car. I also agree with an above poster about the horrible hand to hand combat...it almost seems as if punches are random and blocking is near impossible.

Overall, I think the game deserves a 9 just for the things it does get right...as well as the epic scope and good story line.

Strongly agree.

Nice touches, but they lost the core of the game. Running missions, killing hookers, and driving around is just not fun anymore. Especially the driving... for being grand theft auto, the cars control like total poo, even the good ones.

Then add in sub-par graphics, lousy frame rates, and I'm disappointed.

Story is awesome, and so is the dialogue, but getting TO both of those is frustrating and just not a lot of fun. This one may go back in the box for a rainy day.

they went away, just like the fun.

I'm reinstalling GTA3, I want to see if I just have too many happy memories of that one or something.

4/10...wow!
I was thinking closer to 8.5, and I'm a pretty big fan, too. I still think it's great, but it just doesn't feel right, and there are lots of technical issues that no reviewers even acknowledged.

7/10 for me. And I'm being generous.

This is one of the better sequels I've played and I think most of the hype come from this. People wanting a better GTA got one. If you didn't like previous games in the series there isn't really anything in IV that's going to change your mind.

Disagree ->

See the interesting twist for me is that I am a HUGE fan of 3, VC, and SA. I absolutly LOVED those games.

IV is just not doing it for me though, the biggest issue is the clunky controls IMO. That is not a "console" issue as the other GTA games controls were great (I had them for PS2 and Xbox) as are Crackdowns. But IV just is slow and retarded feeling. He never goes where I want him to and I think a baby could crawl faster than he walks.

That, and the boring/no existant side missions are what are annoying me the most. I felt much more into the game in VC and 3, even if the graphics were worse and the gameplay more simplistic.

As far as overhyped, if you cannot see the hype you are blind! Commercials, every store, every street ad, its GTA EVERYWHERE. Halo was probably more hyped, I agree, but I thought the same thing with Halo 3...2 was much better, simplistic, you could get into it (not saying it was the best game of all time, but decent)...3 just lost me and I gave up on it after awhile.

agree. I played all 3 versions of 3 to death. I still remember the RC airplane ones even! Loved those games and everything about them, and I can't stand 4 so far.

SOMEONE JUST TELL ME:

Taxi driver missions: Still in game but requires work to open them up. Now they are more interesting in my opinion and not as random.

Ice cream truck mission: No idea as of yet not far enough in.

Police Missions: Still in the game and even done better!

Car training missions: Ahh the manuvers and stunt driving right? Not sure not far enough in.

Flight school missions: Again unknown at this point not far enough in. You had to make it to the second city at least to open up some of those training missions.

So My bet is many of the missions you dsicuss are still present just done in a different fashion.

Controls need to smooth out. Hand to hand in Saints row was better. I never missed a kick in Saints Row. Nico still misses motionless corpses with his feet. I like the counters, but Saints Row resulted in more satisfying finishes by applying higher kinetic pushes to the finishing blows.

Driving needs to go back to the old GTA style. I have no problem using it, it's just that the overall speed is much lower than before, and less entertaining.

Aiming should match up with Gears of War, the lock-on hinders more than it helps so I have to focus on getting the right sensitivity for free-aim all the time, and even then there's a delay between squeezing and actually shooting from cover since freeaim behind cover doesn't have him stand up and get ready. A huge improvement over previous GTA games, but Saints Row with just the basic aim-shoot is better.

I like all the detail they put in, but it wasn't worth blurring out things so vigorously to compensate for the amount being drawn. I'd prefer less detail if it means everything can stay sharper. Hands-down, this is better than Saints Row, probably better than GTA:SA, but both of those games have something in them that I prefer over GTAIV's version and thus GTAIV has room to improve.

There are plenty of good things to note about this game that have already been mentioned all over the place. Despite this issues it's still a 9.5/10 game. But certainly not a 10/10 because the issues above are possible to address without adding additional overhead.

How long have you been playing? Doesn't seem like very long, and you don't really seem like a veteran GTA gamer if you don't see what's right in front of you.

This is not a flame bait, but just a bit of a tangent from the normal trend of loving GTA.

Frankly...I am sorta disappointed. I am having a real tough time getting into this one and feeling apart of it. Yes there are some really cool things, I love many of the little details put in (like hailing cabs, actually breaking into parked cars, cell phone, etc.)....but, I am still not feeling it as much as the last GTA games and even games like Crackdown and Saints Row.

The controls still feel heavy and bulky, the character just feels like a chore to move around and get where you want him to be. This ruins a lot of the gun fights and such.

Because the characters have actual WEIGHT now.

The car camera is really low, makes it hard to see what is going on without holding slightly up on the right stick which gets annoying. Changing car views than makes the car about 10 miles away which sucks as well.

Agreed with that... sorta... It's not so difficult to deal with once you play for a while

The missions are very simplistic and lacking the depth that the earlier games had.

The game slowly builds up to much more complex and cinematic missions as the game goes on. Keep playing!

There are barely any side games I have found so far...great bowling, darts, etc  Where are my car collection tasks, ice cream truck driver, taxi driver, police, fire, motorcylce school, car school, etc.? Those were a lot more fun...

Some are there, others are replaced. Brucie will email you car collection tasks (as well as racing), Roman will give you Taxi missions, hack a Police car computer to do vigilante missions, Little Jacob will give you drug delivery jobs... There's a lot more, just gotta play!

The map is way to confusing. I have played for a few hours and still know pretty much no where, only a few select areas. On GTA3 and VC I knew the whole game like the back of my hand. Saints Row and Crackdown I also learned most of the map. On San Andreas it was a bit harder, but still you learned it after awhile. They packed so many roads and such into this one...that it is almost impossible to learn totally. I kinda liked knowing where I was at all times.

It just came out not three days ago, I really doubt you knew the entire map of San Andreas OR GTA3 in three days. KEEP PLAYING

The dialog sound is way mute compared to the game sounds. Using a surround sound system, the atmosphere sounds are extremely loud while the dialog is hard to here...annoying. This happens on lots of games though, so whatever, I can live with it.

Not the games fault. Calibrate your sound system. Sounds like your front speakers aren't leveled correctly. I, too, am using a sound system (Polk's powered with an Onkyo 605) and the game has the best sound I've ever heard on a game. Very loud and in your face. And the directionality is fantastic!

Cars are very generic. So many look like each other and act like each other and there are not very many "cool" cars. There are a few, but they are rare.

Keep playing! Find the car dealerships!

New cops circle thing is neat, but gets impossible to beat. 6 Star wanted level, I was hiding in the subways. Walked about 10 miles, no cops around that could see me. But when I walked outside of the circle by going through the subways, it would almost instantly make a new circle centered where I was ?!?!? No cop saw me! The stars even stayed grayed out. It is just impossible to get rid of 6 stars now! (this is coming from someone who was the master at getting rid of stars in the last games). I really like the circle as you have a good idea of how to get rid of cops, but you no longer can hide close by and still get rid of stars!?!?!

Well, I dont care, flame away, these are my opinions so you do not have to quote my text and tell me why you think it is wrong. I know lots love the game, but IMO it has been a let down so far. I want GTA3, VC, and SA back!

Love the blurr, best game to date....EVER.

In my opinion of course :)

i dont mind the blur, i just see it as sort of a camera focus-type thing. much rather have the blur than have NOTHING in the background but a bunch of fog.

Maybe it's because I haven't built a PC in ages, but I find nothing wrong with the blur.

Haven't read the thread... but overhyped? Not even close for me.

One of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've ever had.

I put this under the Halo category; I am having a lot of fun with it, just not god's gift to video games for me.

LOL, tell me about it (regarding Halo). I can't stand the campaign because I went straight to MP (and I never really played Halo 2). I loved MP until I bought CoD4, and since then I couldn't go back to Halo.

I get what you are saying, but I was starting to feel apart of it by 10hrs in while playing GTA3 and VC...

I knew parts of the map, not saying the whole thing, but large chunks within a few hours of playing 3 and VC.

Yes, somethings are building and getting better, but others are just not.

As far as player models and weight...no, thats not the issue. Crackdown had awesome ragdoll effects and proper weight especially as you built strength...you didnt feel like a retard trying to fit though and your guy would not get stuck on random corners and doors as you try to manuever him through.

I second this again. Within 2-3 missions I knew where my main guy was for GTA3, and each section took a few hours to learn your way around.

5 hours in, and Liberty City is totally, well, unknown. I can't even find roman's place without the GPS.

I just threw in DMC3 again for a bit and had far more fun with it doing 2 levels and dying on a boss than I've had with teh entireity of GTA4 so far. I think I'll put GTA4 away for a while, play some good games in the meantime.

One thing that kind puts me off is the lack of rumble. The controller will shack when your getting a BJ but doest do shit when you flip a car or get shot. Plus having to control the camara going around corners so you don't turn blind is kind of annoying.

Other then some little things I am liking the game a lot more then I thought I would.

Isn't that the point of GTA 4 though? To be a massive game with huge maps. IMO, GTA 4 is the type of game I've been dreaming about since I finished GTA 3. A game where you can do anything and get completely lost in the enormous size of it. All of the other GTA games felt so small to me and that is where GTA 4 excels; even after five hours you STILL have not experienced everything there is to experience. Who would want a game where after just a few hours you have memorized every single road and location? After playing for ten hours I want to be able to drive on a road and be like "wow this game is massive. I haven't even driven on this road before and I've been playing this game for a few days."

And isn't that the point of the GTA series? They need to expand on themselves. Would you seriously want GTA 4 to be just another GTA 3 where you can memorize the entire city within a few hours? Or do you want to be playing GTA 4 for days and still be able to discover new locations and new things to do?

Maybe you are too used to linear games like Devil May Cry where you don't have to think about where you are going. Most gamers crave games that let them go wherever they want, do whatever they want and constantly be exploring new places. Using the size of GTA 4's maps is just a terrible argument. If anything you should be praising the fact that the developers were able to put such a massive city in a video game.

I played it for 10 hours straight last night. Did 6 missions and a couple of dates.
I spent most of my time driving around the city causing mayhem and looking for jumps.

I was also able to make my way to one of the locked cities on a motorcycle, going on the bottom level of some bridge. Instant 6 stars and I was able to survive for 12 minutes.

I ran down about 1700 people so far and killed 500 of them.

If you go to the airport, there are police with machine guns guarding an area, you can run down the cop in front of the gate, grab his machine gun and run off. If you die, then you will start again with the machine gun.

Given that unless a game grabs me immediately, and I mean almost straight out of the box, it gets shelved, so yes, I wanted anther GTA3. Something fun, light hearted, and fast to just screw around in. GTA4 is ponderous. It takes a lot to get into. I'm bored with it, and it'll be going on the shelf soon. I'd rather play hellgate london, and given that was the biggest disappointment of the year for last year, it's saying something.

I'm bored of GTA4 already. I play games for 10-15 minutes at a time these days, and after you lose 5 minutes for the PS3 to load, that's not long enough to do much. It's especially not long enough to get into a game, and it'd take me months to finish GTA4. I don't have months to spend with one game.

If I want to go somewhere, I go somewhere. I fire up the bike and go. Pick a direction - I'd rather be riding. Sadly, it's night, snowing, and freaking cold, so that's out. ;)

And I'd question the "most gamers" comment - many of us hate sandbox games. I despised Oblivion and was bored with Morrowind. Crackdown was fun for an afternoon, and only because I kept driving towards each goal. Black and white sucked major balls. All because none of them had a good enough, definable goal. At least, not a strong enough one to get you through. Those games are boring.

I loved all the GTA3 series. I ignored the side missions, ignored the crap, and just played the main storyline. GTA4 it's much harder to get into that, and much harder to get into the vehicles and controls. I love the story. The audio is awesome. The TV, radio, and minor touches and flourishes are amazing. The protagonist is the most believable we've ever seen. BUT... The gameplay is mediocre, and that ruins all the rest, imo, and for me.

I have a hard time understanding complaints when the game has a completion expectancy of 30-40 hours. Playing it for a couple hours you're still in the tutorial missions. Hell, after 6 hours you're still doing tutorial missions. I'd like to hear on average, how long people play a game before they decide not to play it again.

There were plenty of gameplay videos on the internet before the release so really, you knew exactly what you were getting beforehand, yet people are bitching.

True but maybe your opinion is skewed because you don't have enough time for GTA 4. Since you only play games for about 15 minutes each day you don't really have enough time to completely enjoy GTA 4. You should just set aside a weekend and get really in-depth with it, you'll surely enjoy it. This week I had finals and I found myself procrastinating like crazy because I kept playing GTA 4 for hours; not even doing the missions but just driving around causing complete chaos. It's the most fun I've had in a video game in a while.

About the sandbox games thing, I myself have never liked those types of games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Black & White)... the RPG type games. I feel like GTA 4 breaks the mold and is somewhat like an RPG because of it's size and characters, but it plays completely like an action/adventure game.

I think the GTA series are just awesome because no games are like it. Few games let you just go completely crazy in a huge city with almost no boundaries in what you can do. It's such a nice change of pace from games like Guitar Hero or Halo or Call of Duty. The GTA games aren't completely based on survival or repetition, they are based on how creative you can be and the many different ways you are able to complete various aspects of it.

Likes - Graphics are improved: mostly the lighting system! Sure they're not great, but they're much better. The story line is great but doesn't come closte Ray Liotta. The addition of the cover system. More intricate NPC characters on the street. The game has become a lot more intricate in various ways; the subway system, cab rides, the internet cafes, mini-games, the cop computer. The explosions and physics are great fun.

Dislikes - I think the driving mechanic is trying too hard to be real. Driving in a video game should never be more difficult then real life driving. Driving in real life is simple and easy and you don't sway around like you're on a god damn boat in every car you drive. They should of stuck to the arcade style driving which was fast and fun. For a game that is mostly driving, it's kind of disappointing that that mechanic specifically has declined. It REALLY took the fun out of the bikes too. I'm just amazed they would make their main mechanic so difficult, it seems like a shotty move to me.

Side note: I don't really care about the hype, I just wanted to play the game. Just like Gears of War and Halo 3. None of it really mattered except for how fun they were. This game I'm not so sure about though. Roughly 8-10 hours of playtime.

In real life you aren't driving like you do in the game, so you don't really have any basis for comparison, unless you actually went out and drove extremely hard on the streets in all kinds of cars, then you would feel the car swaying like a boat, as well as not turning if you are going too fast or are on the brakes.

Try Auto-x once with your car and see how it feels to drive and corner hard,
http://youtube.com/watch?v=iJmgvj0afQ0

uhhh... I have driven fast a lot on a track around my area... and it's not as hard as GTA IV. You don't see that guy swaying nearly as hard as the car model would in GTA IV. It's supposed to be a video game that negates reality. It's not meant to be a driving simulator... if it was one it sucks as one...

The driving model is quite challenging at the start but once you get used to the "Driver" style handling (older gamers will know what I mean), with the bouncy, soft suspension, you learn to adjust your driving style.
You also have to remember that most of the cars you get to drive at start of the game are all big clumsy American cars, with bad handling and crappy brakes. As the the game progresses better cars open up.
The car I am driving now is a Ferrai lookalike and it drives like a dream. Loads of grip, tight suspension and very sharp brakes. Being a fan of racing games I really appreciate the way different cars handle and it makes the game more enjoyable for me.

I wasnt really a fan of GTA before and with 4 its a lot better. I almost finished GTA SA for the story and it was alright. This is the one that really opened my eyes. I dont understand why people complain about the controls since it controls like... a GTA game. Once you turn off auto aim though, its more like GTA SA for the PC. Shooting people is ridiculously easy and my weapon of choice is the pistol so far. I just got to the 2nd island and WOW i like the story a lot. The most memorable characters are in 4 IMO. Cmon Brucie?.. hes by far the funniest character ive seen so far. Niko is the most lovable character in the series. Hes like a down to earth guy and like my friends dad (whos also eastern european).

Driving is a lot better in this game IMO. Its actually very easy to get around until you need to use the Ebrake. i cant get the drifts right this time around. But navigating through the city is easy, you just stay between the lanes and youll be safe most of the time. The euphoria engine is amazing in this game and i cant imagine going back to havok ragdolls anymore.

To whomever was asking about Ice Cream trucks, I did drive past one that parked near a bridge today. It's still on the first island, and I was driving Little Jacob on the first of his missions when I saw it.

So I guess that is still in... anybody run across a rampage icon yet?

Also, the hidden packages are red glow-ey pigeons, just in case anyone was still in the dark about that.

"Flying rats" as they're referred to in New York, I'd forgotten they were referred to as that.

Hilarious

If I'm not hooked by 5-6 hours, it's done. I'm not wasting 40 hours on something that isn't good - my time is worth more than that. I saw the gameplay videos - it looked like an improved GTA3, and I feel that it couldn't be farther from that.

Maybe so, but my play style worked fine for every other GTA game, so there's no reason I should have expected that it wouldn't work for this one. I don't have a weekend free till sometime in 2009, maybe 2010 - I've got too many things in real life to blow whole days on a game anymore. And given how bored I am with it now, I'm not so sure I'd even want to do that. I did what you used to do when I was a kid with Skies of Arcadia, FF8 and the like. Not so much anymore (although those had a hook - they pulled me in enough that I couldn't stop playing them. GTA4 has no hook yet).

You played a GTA game for 1 hour and put it away? I'm not flaming you because I have my own complaints with the game now that I am a little more comfortable with it but only giving a game an hour isn't enough to make a judgement call.

How much does the game cost? 70 dollars? How much is your time worth? If I spend 70 dollars on a game, I want it to start entertaining me pretty quickly after I hit start. I don't want to spend the first 10 hours of the game grinding just so I can get to the fun part.

Which brings me to a question: Is GTA 4 like Vice City or San Andreas?

SA really annoyed the shit out of me because it felt like I spent forever training, feeding and breeding CJ like he was a goddamn Pokemon. The Lens flare and excessively dark colors that made it hard to find targets(and when it did, it would autotarget something random not the guy popping caps into my head), No targeting reticule, NPC's that can't hit the side of a building at pointblank range, unless they are shooting me. And I really wanted to pay 60 dollars so I can drive other characters around who do nothing but complain that all I do is drive them around.

This thread is full of people complaining about things that aren’t or shouldn’t be an issue. It seems to me people are more upset that graphics, physics, and scale of the game.

People keep describing the driving as ‘clunky’. I would agree if I were missing thumbs. Generally, all the autos and aircraft handle well, except the helicopter with Sixaxis takes some getting used to. I can discern one car from another; none being generic. I think people get wrapped up on little things like that. Graphics are another issue people are harping about. As stated from earlier post, given the sheer size and scale of the city, the graphics are great! I feel the distance rendering is great and I feel the haze adds to the overall feel.

Also as stated above, the game just came out. There is no way of people knowing maps in full, or opening all the random “fun” side games.

FYI: The game is going to be long – I believe anywhere from 60-100 hours according the 24 hour game review and others. So there should be plenty of meat in between there.
I think people are just back lashing the new experience. This is possibly a more realistic approach to what Rockstar had in mind from the original concept of the game – and it’s great!

And given the more realistic approach to the game in general, Rockstar had to correct things like realistic scale, physics, etc, etc. You cannot have the characteristics from the more ‘cartooned’ previous titles and expect them to work right in this title – it doesn’t work.

So far, so good for me!

I guess the saying goes "to each his own". My copy from Amazon was dropped off yesterday.

I played for 3 hours and finished the tutorial sets of missions and did a few oddjobs. Odd that people are complaining about not being able to steal cars (to drop off at the pickup yard) or sling 'candy' from the ice cream van the second they start the game. From what I remember, GTA 3 didn't let you do car thefts until like 15 hours in. SA didn't until you were 20 hours in. Ice Cream truck? Wasn't that on the #3 island of VC?

My favorite plus so far is that when you die, you still keep your guns. This saves a bejebus amount of time because you aren't restocking to get back to a mission you just failed.

Overhyped? Definitely not. Two Worlds was overhyped. All the ads and previews about "how awesome the graphics were". I gamefly'ed that tripe. 15 minutes in, I was smacking the eject button to save my 360 from becoming infested with the HundredPercentia Crappicus virus. Graphics were ok, too bad they didn't include a decent game with it.

It's not a 10/10, but it's also NO LOWER than a 9/10 either.

Plus, I don't know how many of you have ever been on a racetrack.

Try making a 90 degree turn at 50+ MPH in any vehicle. Seriously, try that shit and see what happens.

In that case why did you buy GTA4? Unless you were living up a rock somewhere, you must have know how big and deep this game was. All the previews and reviews talk about how the single player story alone is 30hrs plus and that there nearly 100hrs worth of gameplay to be had.
If you don't have time or the inclination to play longer deep games like this then maybe you stick to casual games. Or maybe GTA4 is just not for you. I am sure if the game grabbed you as much as it did me, you would make the time to play the game. Or maybe you have become a videogame burnout and it is time to walk away from it all for a while or forever.
