Best game you ever played?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.??? This is without any question the WORST game I've ever played...how can opinions vary so much?

Best PC Game: Far Cry...it was so far ahead of it's time...

But the game I have the most time in would be the Gran Turismo series. It's a love hate thing, either you love GT or you hate it and want to play something more "arcadey". Don't get me wrong, I love arcade style racers, but my heart lies with the Gran Turismo series...

Quake 1, 2 and 4

Mafia, I never finished the first mission, horrible controls.

To update my list, which already included Tribes:

Half Life 1
Quest for Glory Series
Police Quest Series
Space Quest Series
Leisure Suit Larry Series
FEAR
Mechwarrior

FPS- Any HL game
RPG- Morrowind/ Oblivion
Strategy- Homeworld/ Starcraft/ Warcraft II
Platform/Adventure - Ratchet and Clank, Zelda (Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess)

I gotta say I fell in love with the Earth 2150, was a great game for lans and had quite the campaign

streets of sim city was an interesting game too and speaking of Maxis games, marble drop was also a good little past time game

I like games for various reasons. These stick out in my mind:

Replay: Chrono Trigger
Soundtrack: Chrono Trigger (followed by Halo 3)
Sports game: Triple Play 2000 (HR derby targets FTW)
Platformer: Super Mario World (I did all 96 exits multiple times)
Silly, mindless thumbstick pushing: Beautiful Katamari (rolling up the solar system was massive fun)
Plot: BioShock (not finished, but gotten through the major plot twist)
Overall mythos: Halo series

Slightly unusual categories, but it's hard to pinpoint favorites based on other criteria, at least for me (e.g., as seen above, I often like FPSes for reasons unrelated to their nature as "shooters")

Metal Gear Solid [series] for sure. I carry such great memories with those games, and the emotion is incredible. Just hearing the orchestrated theme is enough to reduce any man to tears. ;)

C&C : Red Alert
Heroes of Might and Magic 2
Diablo : Hellfire
Diablo II & D2 : Lord of Destruction Expansion
Mech Commander 2
Mechwarrior Mercenaries
Titan Quest & Titan Quest : IT

Fallout 2 - PC
UT99 - PC
Dungeon Siege - PC
FF3 - SNES
Super Metroid - SNES
F-Zero - SNES
Shadowrun - SEGA Genesis

What a tough call.

Some of the best I've played, not crammed into a list of 5...

Ultima Underworld
Ultima 4 & 7
Quake 2, esp. CTF
Grim Fandango
Dark Age of Camelot
Baldur's Gate 2
Diablo 2
M.U.L.E.
Half-Life
Civilization 2
Super Mario Kart
Knights of the Old Republic
Gabriel Knight 3
Guitar Hero 2 / Rock Band
Bureaucracy
GTA Vice City

I'll go with categories.
FPS: Half Life 2 series
RPG: Diablo 2 (STALKER if you can consider that an RPG...kind of a stretch)
Driving: GTA series, preferably Vice City
RTS: CoH
Puzzle: Portal

I love threads like this. Seeing what others put is fun.

List the top 5 best games you've ever played:

1) Tie Fighter
2) Homeworld
3) Warcraft II
4) Doom
5) Half-Life

Honorable Mention:

Dark Forces
Starcraft

Tribes. The pure fun, and intensity I played with over the span of several years, has not been even close to matched by any game. And it is multiplayer only.

Calling Stalker the worst game ever, is pretty silly. Shaq Fu, Superman 64, Trespasser, E.T., etc. are all much, much, much worse than Stalker. Stalker is a very good game, and you're in the vast minority if you think otherwise.

The youngins dont know anyting about the greatness of system shock 2

its amazing when i see DUES EX mentioned when it was a direct rip off of SS2
I just had to respond to this.

Deus Ex and System Shock 2 had virtually nothing in common aside from the cybernetic upgrades. The storylines couldn't have been more different. SS2 takes place in a single, enclosed environment for 95% of the game. DE spans the globe. The gameplay was vastly different, as was the combat. Interaction with other characters was nonexistent in SS2 except for Shodan whereas JC Denton dealt with allies and adversaries throughout DE. DE had 3 different possible endings...

I could go on, but this thread really isn't the place. I loved both games and consider each a first ballot hall of famer. To claim DE is a direct rip-off of SS2 just doesn't make any sense to me. You want to see a direct rip off of SS2? Look no further than BioShock.

I am going to half to say Half Life without a doubt, it was my first game that really got me heavily into PC gaming and i was addicted to it for about 6-8yrs after its release.

I just finished COD4, and i must say its not as close as HL was on my list but its definitely #2, after that i would say its FF7 then COD4

I like these threads also... Here's mine :D :

List the top 5 best games you've ever played:

1) Dark Age of Camelot (PC)
2) Shadows of Yserbius (PC)
3) Milton's Secret Castle (NES)
4) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (original; XBOX 1)
5) Civilization 1 (SNES)

Honorable Mention:

SimTower/SimAnt (PC)
Starcraft (PC)
Rock and Roll Racing (SNES)
Marble Madness (NES)
American Gladiators (NES)
Battletoads (NES)
Golden Axe (GENESIS)
Powerstone 1 & 2 (DREAMCAST)

Civilization II (PC)
Doom II (PC)
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (SNES)
Starcraft (PC)
Super Mario World (SNES)

If I HAD to choose one, I guess I'd go with Civilization II or Super Mario World.

1) battlefield 1942+desert combat mod
2) world of warcraft
3) team fortress 2
4) grand theft auto vice city

Not to mention I really didnt even care for deus ex but really liked ss2, that should show how different they are, they just had a simlar (same?) game engine, lots of games do.

Deus Ex was a great game... but it was similar to SS2.... but my vision of thinfs from way back then are a lil foggy

but i did play both to the end and loved them both...

but SS2 is the greatest of all time

I thought SS2 was way too short i love the gameplay in deus ex so ithink DE is better the graphics are better too

Couldn't say, I find questions like this impossible to answer. Played so many games over the years that I've lost track. You could ask me what my favourite game of all time is today and it'll change by tomorrow.

It'll probably be a C64 game or an Amiga game though, back in the days of innovation and creativity.

Civilization 2, Starsiege Tribes, or Ultima Online.

Too hard to choose one.

Tough call. For me I'll just go with a few of my favorites in no particular order:

Resident Evil 4
Baldur's Gate (series)
Street Fighter 2 (series)
Daggerfall
Tekken 3
Quake 2
Final Fantasy 6
Oblivion
Ninja Gaiden
Phantasmagoria
Mario Kart 64
Half-Life 2
Ravenloft
Strider
Super Mario Bros. 3

RPG
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind

RTS
Total War Series

Multi FPS
Quake 3 (countless hours playing this game)

Single FPS
FEAR

Close Runner-ups
KOTOR
TF2
Portal

i'm such an off-and-on gamer that i end up missing a lot of really good games. But the last game i really liked was Max Payne. Before that, i was (and still am!) a big Zelda OOT fan. Super Mario World was probably my favorite game before that.

Didn't think this thread would go on for as long as it has. Lots of good games mentioned here.

Planetside
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 - Thats right. The first one
Grand Theft Auto Vice City
Grand Theft Auto S.A
Grand Turismo 2, 3, 4
Forza Motorsport 1, 2

RTS - Homeworld Catacylsm - WC3, RTW etc are up here too
FPS - Half Life 2, Call of Duty 4 was really good too.
Online FPS - Desert Combat
RPG - I really liked Summoner - never really an rpg person though...
MMO - World of Warcraft, got bored of it recently though

Overall Winner - Freespace 2, god that game rocked.
