What is the current state of PC gaming...?

Piracy is an excuse for developers making second rate games to point fingers at and say "look, evil pirates made the game fail!!! It was all them!!"

PC Gaming is doing just fine. Didn't you hear ? A group of crappy developers just decided to prioritize console development. You knew them as Epic. One group of retards less, to ruin PC games with console ports.

And I'm being serious. No sarcasm at all. PC Gaming started to be less appealing, ever since developers started to gives us console ports. So one less company that does that, is good news for PC Gamers.

I agree...Epic used to be well...epic...but now, they will be forever remembered for UT3 (what a disapointment) and GOW (lol).

As stated previously by many before, good riddance.

I personally don't enjoy playing with a gamepad unless it's racing, sport, or fighting sims.

For all the rest, nothing comes even close to K+M.

I own a Wii tho, but for obvious reasons, since I was looking for a different gaming experience than my PC...and the Wii rawks!!

I agree...Epic used to be well...epic...but now, they will be forever remembered for UT3 (what a disapointment) and GOW (lol).

heh, being remembered for GOW on console isn't anything to laugh at, that game sold millions of copies and is a huge success for epic. So UT3 was a flop. Seems as though epic should just stick to console games and not worry about pleasing us ungrateful PC gamers and maybe they'll release another quality release like GOW

The problem with GoW, was when it came out on PC it was a broken piece of shit. Bugs bugs bugs bugs bugs bugs and more bugs. It still doesn't even work for me, at all.

well ms gets money for every game sold on console...they DONT on pc. CA CHING $$$$
they have control of everything and make even more online CA CHING $$$$

funny they don't consider the cost of the os as profit like this....I bet if there were no pc games everyone would be using linux.

last year it was all about games for windoes
NOW ITS F THEM pay people to shout and drop support all financed by MS
so we pay them to F us over...way to go microcrap

yep, its a half-assed port. And we are making it clear to them that half-ass pc ports won't fly with us and they won't see our money because of it. However this also means they'll eventually just stop trying altogether. This is one reason I'm getting a console soon.

Well GTA4 is another reason. I'm not going to take a chance(as well as wait for months) and find out that the PC port of GTA4 is crap. Sure they've been solid in the past, but in the past PC wasn't so low on publishers priorities.

I would like you not to take my words out of their context.
Since we are talking about PC gaming and I was quoting a post about Epic, I obviously loled at GOW on PC.

I must admit I didn't particularely enjoy GOW on 360 either, but there was nothing to lol at, and enough people who really liked it.

Now, GOW on PC was truly a joke (IMHO)...

Hope this clarifies.

I loved GoW on console. but I'M a PC gamer, I don't own a console. I was furious that I bought that game and wasted money and supported a shit product. (thats why I download games before I buy them).

Ungrateful ? Maybe you missed the sarcasm smiley, but Epic IS the ungrateful one. I don't know...we just bought their games for years and made them what they are today. Maybe PC Gamers deserved more respect, than to receive crappy console ports, especially from a game that started as a successful PC franchise ?

Just a thought...

If they do stop altogether, I say, YES! AT LAST! A company that does what Epic did, has the nerve to advertise UT3, a PC franchise, with "From the creators of Gears of War" (at the time, a console only title), prioritizes console development, while being part of the PC Gaming Alliance, is nothing short of retarded.
I say good riddance. You can't develop anything more than a console game, then PLEASE stay out of the PC Gaming scene.

What he said...:)

PC gaming is about exactly where it was 7 years ago. It'll be the same when the new batch of consoles come out.

I've read you commenting over and over again about it's retarded for Epic to be part of the PC gaming alliance........why?

I mean they are pushing for more standardization of hardware. What?! You're so objecting that ANY company is coming out and saying "Stop using those stupid intel integrated graphics cards that can't do anything for a game?" Bad epic bad! We want shitting cards!

The nerve to advertise UT3 "From the people creators of Gears of War" OMG no way? You mean PS3 users or ANY new gamers can't possibly not be informed of that info? I mean movies do it all the time. I mean no one advertises their games like that!

Gears of War a buggy piece of shit for PC? Huh..funny I beat it twice now. And granted I had the game lose my saved game file once but...buggy piece of shit...hmm...The bugs I've experienced are the same for many other pc games. I guess ALL pc gaming is a buggy piece of shit then? Oh except Doom 3 which pretty much was mocked. First time I can really recall a pc game having hardly any bugs.

BTW. Epic made ENGINES used in tons of games. Many pc developers used that engine. They are a small company and made pretty much JUST unreal tournament games. Gears is pretty much their first new IP in ages. And you know, the game published by MS to help move xbox consoles.

Spot on. Spot on.

Epic couldn't sell UT3 on PC, and they sold even less on the respective consoles. It wasn't piracy. $1 Million for Crysis is nothing to sneeze at. Especially considering they don't have to pony up to the console maker.

You'll hear a lot of complaining, however PC is doing just fine. Plenty of big name releases coming up, even if they are cross platform.

You guys are great, but the problem is that you are minority. Number of smart people will allways be smallest, so all this is really expected as gaming becomes more mainstream.

Whats nice about a console is its almost all different types of games. You play your FPS and MMO games on the PC while you can play games like rock band and sports games on a console. Right now I'm loving TF2 for my PC and ea skate on my PS3.

I must have missed Skate coming out for PC? Or for that matter, any decent racing game that isn't rally or Need for Speed underground street racing fluff.

I will never understand the blind console hatred around these parts.

Yeah, you must have missed the best racing sim ever made, with online leagues that play for thousand dollar cash prizes, have scored drifting competitions, 12 and 24 hour endurance races and stuff like that, live for speed, look it up.

Also, TOCA 3 is an amazing racing game, better graphics than LFS, but not as good as a simulator and not nearly as good online play.

maybe you missed the fact that epic is a company? It's funny because you talk as if epic is a person that stabbed you in the back, and you're getting all emotional about it. stop pms'ing and come back to reality.

they are a COMPANY, they will do what they can to make money, bottom line. Console games are where the money is so that's where epic going to be. They don't owe you anything. And Obviously they don't seem to prioritize making quality PC games anymore. Oh well. Move on. Some great games can only be experienced on the console, this is how its been and this is going to be how it is in the future. Hold onto your elitism if you wish, but you'll be missing out on some great games.

If UT3 was what it should have been, sold a few million copies, and had a huge online community, this never would have been an issue. I think a lot of people are bitter that Epic released a pile of shit with UT3, it got rejected by the PC community, and Epic never took responsibility for what they caused. Instead they just spouted some anti PC shit, took their ball, and went to consoles. Not to mention the shitty GoW port. That is fine and all since it is their company, however Epic's PC problems are self inflicted, and they never owned it.

And what should have UT3 been? if it was more like UT people would complain that its more of the old. if it was too many new concepts, people would say its been consolized. What UT3 should have been is a new IP, at least then you don't have the impossible-to-please lovers of the previous versions of the game.

ugh. im arguing about the state of PC gaming, what a waste. its a sign of the times. years ago when we had multitudes of fresh PC games, this topic didn't even cross our minds. now look at what we've become!

Epic clearly stated it won't be developing any technology for the PC untill 2011 give or take. The unreal engine from here on then will be designed exclusively for consoles.

Hmmm, Well, the end of human existence is going to happen in 2012. Epic only going to have 1 year to make a game and profit from it.

HEHEHEHE!!!!!!

Actually, the Mayan calender just ends at 2012, the Mayans were NOT referencing the end of the world or mankind. The people that believe that to me are not different then the people that believe in the trickery of the bible. (no offense, not trying to start an argument, just the way I see it)

That's actually a very good point. I remember back in 2001-2004 there were a LOT of great PC games coming out constantly, this topic was hardly ever even discussed, now look. I do love PC gaming and always will, but it really sucks that all we get these days is a handful of good games each year. :S Contrary to most, I am actually glad we are seeing a good amount of console games being ported to PC. I just wish they'd do a better job porting them. Original IPs are of course the best, but we can always hope. :)

Ummmm, how are we being ungrateful? Because we don't kiss their asses about everything they do...? They started on PC and have made award winning multi-million sellers on PC primary. They should stick with PC mainly and port the games to consoles. NOT the other way around.

Whats nice about a console is its almost all different types of games. You play your FPS and MMO games on the PC while you can play games like rock band and sports games on a console. Right now I'm loving TF2 for my PC and ea skate on my PS3.

Except for the fact that most sports and racing games suck - which is really all consoles are good at. And one thing consoles will never EVER have is strategy games (or at least be any good at it). Probably the best game genre of any, imho.

P.S. Don't get me wrong, I do NOT hate console gaming. Some of my all time favorite games are on consoles, I just think developers are focusing way too much of their efforts on them and abandoning the PC gamers.

Gears of War on 360 probably sold 4 times as much as ANY of their PC games ever did... I don't really blame them for going 360 primarily, and I think anyone with any sort of business sense would either.

The last number I saw was GoW for the 360 selling over 4 million copies in its lifetime, and I've started to see recent reports saying this number is now over 5 million... I don't remember any Unreal Tournament coming close to that number.

There is now tons more 360's out there now for the release of GoW 2 then there was for part 1, and plenty of people probably buying a 360 just for GoW 2... I expect GoW 2 to sell on par or even better.

You really fault Epic for going console only? It works for them and congrats. I thought GoW on PC was a mess, and I regret buying it, but I'll definitely get GoW 2 for 360 cause it works a lot better on the console (and it's not so much of a buggy mess).

Even if GoW was released ONLY on the PC I doubt it would have even broke a million sales in it's lifetime... certainly not anywhere near 4 million.

Epic moved on, yea, but hopefully there will be someone to fill their shoes. There is still plenty of developers who focus mainly on the PC. I'm a huge fan of PC games, but I don't really get this hatred towards Epic for moving from the PC. So they want to do console work, yay for them.

Like I said earlier, there is this crazy hatred of anything having to do with consoles on this forum which is just a little odd to see. The only problem I ever have is when you have developers like Infinity Ward who bitch about the PC platform (while having the #1 best selling game) and then screw us over on extra content. Epic is only guilty of releasing a shitty game.

Does no one value putting your loyal customers first anymore...? I also run a business, and would never dream of f**king over the people that made me what I am. If I wasn't making enough money, I would expand on my target consumers and cater to them as well, but I would NEVER leave the people that made my company what it is high and dry. Epic has left us PC gamers high and dry, and that is not cool. I am so sick of this mentality that greed comes before everything, does no one have integrity anymore? I'm sorry but Epic f**king over the millions of loyal PC fans that made them who they are is bullsh*t.

Yeah, there is no such thing as corporate loyalty. Most warranties are a joke because the companies have such specific terms (you have to be run over by a herd of elephants, emus, 10 zebras and 3 kangaroos on a sunday the 5th of July at precisely 3:24PM if you want to return your defective Hardwareitem). There is no such thing as corporate loyalty, this used to exist in spades. Why has this disappeared? Because the average consumer doesn#t remember being bent over the table when it comes around again 2 years later.

Its the same reason politicians can lie through their teeth directly after the election, but the next time around almost nobody remembers these things. I refuse to vote liberals in BC anymore, their leader promised "I will not cut healthcare, education, etc"... 3 weeks later after the largest political victory I've ever heard of, he gutted the shit out of them. GUTTED. 4 years later, nobody even mentions this fact in the elections. Such is the attention span of our society, such is the excuse why companies can produce shit products, with no support and no loyalty to their customer base, and why the world will spiral downward into a cesspool of greed and corruption. Oh wait, we're there already. :)

Maybe you also missed my previous posts (don't even know if they were in this thread, but they were on a similar thread), but I completely understand the reasons for companies to prioritize their efforts on the platform that will give them more money. They are a money making company after all.

However, what Epic did was in fact a stab in the back. We, PC Gamers, were the ones that made them what they are, so yes, in a way, they DO owe us something. At the very least, some respect, since we DID spend our money on their games in the past.
They decide to release a piece of crap console port to the PC, then proceed to complain about PC sales (even if they are higher than console sales) and ditch PC support almost entirely, with comments like "PCs are good for anything, except games" or "next gen consoles, even a Nintendo one, will take priority over the PC". All this being part of the PC Gaming Alliance, which is SUPPOSED to boost the quality of PC Games and NOT prioritize even more console development, which means more console ports for PC Gamers i.e. less quality overall. That's hypocrisy right there.

So, yeah, pretty retarded and I'll just continue to do what I do best with these idiots: NOT BUY THEIR GAMES.

I've read you commenting over and over again about it's retarded for Epic to be part of the PC gaming alliance........why?

Because to say that "It's not a buggy piece of shit, because I didn't have any bugs" is, well, naive, to put it nicely...

Anyway, I didn't even complain about bugs, so don't know why you quoted me and then proceeded to talk about bugs. I complained about it being a console port, which it most obviously is one.

About advertising, yes the "nerve". Again, we are PC Gamers, we want our games to be, well, PC Games, not console ports. Advertising a game (that started as a PC franchise anyway), with "From the makers of Gears of War", is retarded, because it clearly sends out the message that it's a console game, first and foremost. So why did they complain about PC sales, when in fact they shot themselves in the foot, with publicity EXCLUSIVELY to consoles ? That's one.
The other is obviously the fact that they didn't care about their loyal fans. They just ditched them quickly and even put all the blame on them. That's retarded and all I'll do is simply not support their games anymore. They should stick with making engines only, since they don't know how to make games anymore. I was disappointed with the UE3 anyway. Blurry mess with no native AA support, in 2007-2008 ?...

Exactly. If they want to prioritize console development, go for it. But don't ruin our PC Games, because of it. Take longer to develop one, but at least ACTUALLY put out a PC Game and not a console port.
To complain about PC sales and the PC platform itself, when they were the idiots that caused their own problems, is hypocrisy in its finest.

Unfortunately, corporate greed is what it is. And we can't do anything about it. But we can show them what we think about their retarded mentality, which is NOT buy their games anymore.

After reading all this, I can't help think that some of my favorite games of all time were console ports.

Games like Psychonauts and Price of Persia: The Sands of Time, which were designed and originally released on the XBox still kicked ass on the PC. I like playing games at high resolution, with a controller, on my PC.

If a game is good, I don't give a shit what system it was designed for. I have a decent PC. I don't own a console. The point in PC gaming is the flexibility.

Not that I have the time anymore...

Nobody would bash the console ports when they were done well. psychonauts was a GREAT port, it was a console game that worked well on PCs. It also worked with keyboard and mouse ( I tried with gamepad, but prefered my K&M setup).

LOL, do you follow these tech news and game development much or is this your first time ?

Because to say that "It's not a buggy piece of shit, because I didn't have any bugs" is, well, naive, to put it nicely...
childish. But away. apparently you're not following the massive amount of bugs in 90% of pc games that aren't ports that are strictly exclusive for PCs. I stated it's no buggier than the crap made exclusively for pc. By your own argument, if PC developers can't make their own shit, maybe pc gaming should die period because most of it is bug ridden.

Anyway, I didn't even complain about bugs, so don't know why you quoted me and then proceeded to talk about bugs. I complained about it being a console port, which it most obviously is one.

Ya they made a ton of engines that pc developers used and now the focus is making the new engine for consoles as a priority. Sounds like a pretty big loss. You nitpicking about advertising is weak because it's just that...nitpicking. I never cared about UT games or multiplayer only games. I didnt follow UT and part 3 was my first stab at buying one. I liked it, but some reason no one else did. I gave UT3 a chance only because I did like Gears so much *shrug* whatever. They didn't market to YOU so your pissed. Forget the masses and trying to get more of an audience.

"I was disappointed with UE3 anway" Sounds like a "I never like her anyway! I dumped her not the other way around!!"

Some of them can. But when they port a console game to PC, it's bound to happen more frequently, which is precisely what Epic did, with both Gears of War and UT3 and I find that unacceptable. It is my opinion after all.

Can you understand the simple fact that console to PC ports = less quality in the PC Game ?
Or is that too hard for you to understand ?

Yes, I complain BECAUSE it is a console port and thus quality goes down the drain. If you're ok with it, fine. Go ahead and buy everything they do. I'm sure they'll appreciate it and continue to do the same along the road. I'm not happy with it, so I don't buy their crappy console ports. It's my only way to show I'm not happy with it.

Lack of AA support and post-processing over the top, which makes the game look blurry, is not what I call "next-gen" or "advanced", but your definition is obviously different...

I don't have a fundamental problem with console ports. but:

FACT:
- Console ports are often sloppily done money making grabs, therefore they are full of bugs and unoptimized to run on PCs (run like ass).
- Consoles have a different control system that some/many PC uses don't like/prefer, these being ported over is annoying for many of us
- Many Console Ports say "push A or Right Trigger to attack"... my keyboard does not have a right tricked, and A is move left. ***falls under sloppy***
- Console ports having annoying and or RETARDED interfaces. AKA no mouse support, stupid push backspace to go back crap
- Console Ports often suffer dumbed down gameplay for the "average joe", whereas many PC gamers are used to games that push the genre forward. We come to expect advancement, not a regurgitation of the same shit, just a different setting.

I've heard Unreal Tournament 2004 sold about 4 million copies. Gears just sold a lot faster since MS was pushing it, and their were no big titles for the 360 yet.

We come to expect advancement

I believe this is why they want to kill pc gaming. We want things that consoles don't have.
We expect replay value and good solid game play in a game that last and last. Console gamers want flash and wow.
That is why we see things in pc games now that are WTF who the hell cares about that.
it has no plan and no thought but look at that cut scene...whoooooooo
mad did you see that....whooooooo

give me a game that is solid and playes for more than a week and I will pay
