why does the 550 watt version cost less than the 520 watt version??

The big difference is the 520 has modular cables. Might not be worth it to some ppl to pay more for that.

They are virtually the same. It can even vary from each individual power supply. I would say the HX520.

I'd go for the VX550 simply because it may be cheaper (a big plus!) and I prefer Indy regulation to group regulated units.

You might want to double check that HX520

I'd go for the hx520, the modular cables alone make it more than worth it. Although if you don't really care how your case looks/don't have much money then go for that other one. Personally I would never buy another psu that wasn't modular.
