Why the burning crusade has destroyed WoW

Let me start off by saying I know WoW has like 80 bagillion people playing it. I know its still very popular.. this post is just the thoughts of an old school WoW player upset with the new game.

I loved 1-60.. The world was great, the instances were fun, the stories/lure was interesting.. etc...

Raiding at 60 was a blast as well, MC was awesome (at first) and BWL was probably my favorite instance in the game. Even AQ, NAXX, ZG, Ony were extremely well done and were fun.

Bam TBC hits the floor and everything goes haywire.

There are a few major reasons why I believe TBC was destroyed WoW.

1) Arenas- A lot of people are going to disagree with me here, but IMO the simplicity of obtaining arena gear was the main factor that destroyed WoW. Whats the incentive of raiding (unless you can clear BT) when you can play 30 minutes a week and in a couple months be decked out in epic weps that match the high end raiding gear. I have no problem with some gear being available by pvp, but when i realized how easy it was to get arena epics.. i was stunned. The main incentive for many ppl to raid in original WoW was to get gear to own at pvp.. now any dumbas* with 30 spare minutes on his hand can gain access to the best gear.

2) Raiding/PvE Content- Old school WoW raiding was fun.. The new instances feel trite and boring. Making boss encounters extremely technical (where one person messes up the whole grp is fu*ked) does not make them innovative or fun. Idk, i guess i just miss the epic experience of a 40 man raid.. not the every player counts aspect of 10-25 man raids.

3) Outlands- I'm sorry.. the outlands sucks. This game has gone from having an awesome fantasy world to having some sort of sci-fi space/fantasy mess mix. It doesn't work. Bring back old Azeroth.. or at least make more new content in Azeroth so its not just stop by in SW to check the AH.

Theres a couple more, but I feel that TBC has just taken the fun out of WoW... If blizzard brought back a pre TBC server I would reactivate in a second.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

They are bringing Azeroth back bigtime in the WoTLK, don't worry. The addicts will get a massive dose.

Still glad I quit.

lol, same. I started playing I think about two months after TBC came out. Leveled to 70 and raided, I had a blast. The people I played with though had been playing WoW for awhile. Some had been playing since the beta. The people who had played a lot before TBC didn't like TBC much, they preferred the old WoW more then the new. I don't think your alone. I miss playing an MMO but I'm not going to play any of the current ones out. I want a next gen one, probably wait till guild wars 2.

Naxx was the height of WoW raiding, those encounters were just absolutely epic.

many ppl are joining everyday, and ur somewhat incorrect about the PVP aka Welfare epics, thats what i did to get semi ready for Bigger things like Kara, Za etc... 30mins is sometimes enough for 1 Alterac Valley and that will get u like 500 honor or so 500x5=2500honor, not enough to do jack with, but what it did was save me time from sitting in BLUE gear and hoping better gear dropped for my class, and it Costed alot of Honor, but overall slightly less time and frustration of hoping for my class drop and depending on others to be on, instead my PVP skill has Dramatically improved, and playing against the AI in Instances is just too easy, bosskillers is awesome site for info/strategies, but like i said its not as easy as you make it seem, theres still lots of time invested, but it was a solo effort, my guild doesnt mind, we have some ppl who Raid alot and Casual raiders as well.

as for the other things u dont like, I dont have a comment for that.

So what I did while some people were running instances for gear and playing the odds game, I went with the guarantee, spent a few hours a day, and get anywhere from 5k-10k on good day, and now I run Heroics for Badges, really nice gear, and guild Raids, Kara, ZA and Gruuls, no BT yet and take me along, and Id rather play the odds game for the HIGHER end gear.

As for PVE gear I noticed seems to have a bit more Attack Power or Hit rating.

But I understand where your coming from, but theres still alot better gear thats PVE that pwns most PVP epics.

TBC made the game a lot more fun for those who aren't hardcore raiders(I was one prior to TBC). I also didn't like the whole sci-fi feel of it and I'm telling you, I am very excited for the new expansion simply because it will be the "normal" Warcraft realm that we know and love.

Thank god for that, I hate raiding. Nothing like epic "staying up all night for a 2% chance at getting an item but oh wait I have no luck on lotto rolls" adventure.

Sadly, the PvP was still boring. So it wouldn't bring me back.

Still glad I quit.

I am going to have to disagree with you here. You make it sound "easy" to do arenas. If you have ever tried them, you wouldn't make a statement like this.
How do people that play arenas to get gear affect you playing your character in PvP? If you are getting owned, then raid to get better gear or PvP more.

It just sounds like your bored of the game. It may be time to move on to another game.

I'm glad I quit before BC came out. I enjoyed WoW for the most part, but my schedule didn't let me play the 5 hour raids and other post lvl 60 content. In fact, there were times that I would log on, play 30 to 45 minutes, and than have to log out. How can you get epic gear when you can't do all the instances with everyone else?

In the end, uninstalling was a good thing for me. I was no longer frustrated with the amount of play time I had. I no longer cared about the gear I had. Running around in the battlegrounds with blues was frustrating.

In the end, finding a game that I could play with my schedule was my best option. I liked WoW, but it wasn't for me.

I'm tempted to join again and start up a new character, or work on my old 62 rogue. I just don't want to play alone though, not as fun.

to me it was one of the last patches that removed alot of elites from the game, im sorry but Stromgarde Keep is a joke now and anyone can solo that area! TBC did ruin alot of stuff but added some good things, my buddy has been working on getting PvP gear and it is taking quite some time, and he plays several hours a day, so its not easy to get and they arent "welfare epics" that too me sounds like a jaded gear snob, who sits there and crunches numbers to get a extra crit or .001% damage, geez its a frikin game! have fun and enjoy it.

Arena gear is better for pvp, raid gear is better for pve. Do which one you like, or both. But a guild of people in arena gear would have a lot of trouble in BT so don't go saying that everything is equal. Plus who care about the gear in the way that you're talking about it anyway? Gear is what keeps people playing, but if you enjoy raiding then just doing the raids should be fun to you. The fact that people can get epics by arenas that are less time consuming has never bothered me or made me think that raid gear is pointless.

Anyone have thoughts on this?
Yeah, they've got over ten million subscribers, so obviously they're doing something right. The things that you're complaining about are the elements Blizzard put in to attract more players to the game. Giving an alternative to decent gear aside from raiding is what a lot of people wanted.

WoW is a casual-friendly game that will do nothing but frustrate those looking for the "hardcore" MMO experience. If it was any different, Blizzard wouldn't have nearly as many players. It's in their best interest to keep doing things this way.

First off I'll say this. I don't play WoW. I play FFXI, I have played wow in the past as well as CoV, and a few demos of others. I am a big believe that two things need to exist. 1) Gear that is next to impossible to obtain and that is incredibly powerful (almost game breaking but not quite) and 2) Enemies that are next to impossible (or currently unbeaten but the developers will still claim it can be done) which generally will drop at least some of the gear in bracket 1. Now, once said gear is estabilished, nothing should EVER be done to make it extremely easy to obtain OR to make something better. By doing this you tell the players that all your work will mean nothing in 3 months to 1 year so why bother trying. Raising the level camp imho is another one of the unbreakable taboos of a game.

I actually deleted my characters and cancelled my account this morning.. I just got bored with it. I played pretty much since the release so it lasted awhile. I would have been more into it if I had 4-5 hours to raid, but I don't. Time to move on..

DUDE! get them restored immediately and sell them. Even a completely nub 70 is work at least $100.

Oh you mean like back in EQ1 days where u had 50 or more people competing for a rare spawn(IE 1 time a week, not 2 times or 1 time a day, like wow) can we say camp check! and the items was truly rare and not many people had it? but sadly that will not happen since most of the "i need it now generation" plays WoW. it worked back in 1999 but not now.

I quit WoW for the exact same reasons. However I quit before BC came out because there was nothing for a casual gamer like me to play. I was stuck at my Tier 0 set and there was nothing left.

Last time I checked we all paid the same monthly subscription fee. Shouldn't we all be entitled to some fulfillment as long as we put in similar total work?

Yeah when WORK ment quality players working hard to get something hard. Not oh I can put in 5 hours in one time slot but i'm a shitty player with shitty attitude and can get it now now now! Difficulty isn't allways measured in time. While most of the good fights in FFXI are 30mins+ with a bit of work before you start, a 5 hour raid is silly. Especially when from what I hear most of them are just not hard they just take 5 hours. Most of the rarer gear comes from mobs taht have the 1 per day spawn timers, while there are several that have the 3-5 day timers. WoW is MMORPG on easy mode.

I generally agree with the OP.

I was big on the World PVP though, and rolled on a PVP server at release. Shortly after they introduced battlegrounds, world PVP shrunk and dried up like a raisin of it's former glory. Arenas are more of the same shit to me, focusing on pitting two teams against eachother in a static arena, instead of a dynamic and varied landscape and unpredictability that occurs in world PVP. Old world raiding really had an epic feel to it, when it took 40 people to accomplish things. I do like that the newer raids focus more on smaller groups (it wasn't easy to get all 40 players and manage them sometimes) and that individual performance is actually an issue (not 30 good players carrying 10 crappy ones) but they lose the epic feel of the 40 man raids and I really wish they had kept that as an option. Now the only places you'd need to use your entire raid group is for outdoor bosses or raiding a city.
I also agree that the gear availability accelerated much too fast for my tastes. I remember when having an epic from molten core was like a badge of honor and a sign of accomplishment when we first started running it. Now everyone is running around with epics and the ones that players labored long and hard for are useless compared to newer things or pvp rewards. While I have tried BC and played with the stuff they've added, I couldn't get into it, didn't like the entire two years of work beforehand being swept out the door, and didn't really like the direction they were taking the pvp aspect of the game. I quit WoW a few months before the release of BC, when my character was still worth something.

$1000 to be precise.

I miss world PVP and i miss the ability to have a few screw ups in raids without having the raid wipe. I do not miss having to get 40 people online and ready for a 4 hour raid in order to share 12 items amongst them all. I do think that some BC instances are very very ridiculous, but that is what makes them epic, if we could all do them we'd all be in purples.

As for arenas, i am split on this one. Yes, its kinda fucked up that i can log in lose 10 times in an hour and get 200 arena pts. Then in a month i get S3 pants. Its true, thats kinda frustrating. however, PVP gear is not PVE gear for a reason. There are many things that differentiate the too, I'm not sure how significant they are for each class, but as a melee shaman, it makes a difference. I can't arena in my PVE gear, i get shit on. I do significantly less dps in PVP gear, but my burst dmg is higher. Raids and burst dmg = death for enhance shaman. I dunno. I think world PVP is the thing I miss the most. Its still exists. My guild took SW last week, just for shits, with 35 people. I wish there was more of a penalty for your faction leader being killed (well a penalty in general) because you only get like 5 people trying to stop you.

sigh... laptop is dying.... i'll finish this rant later.

I own this game but have never installed it. Reading threads like this is why, it makes the game seem very intimidating to get into, with all this weird talk and language it seems only the people who play the game know.

Also, I really enjoy flying solo for an hour or two as well as playing in a group, but threads often make it sound like I have to be in a large group and play for 5 or 6 hours to get enjoyment of the game? Is that true?

Should I even install this and play it because I don't want to have to invest 5 or 6 hours of time and deal with huge groups of people every single time I play. To me that don't sound fun, it sounds tedious. Now I'm not saying at times I wouldn't like doing that but not all the damned time. Does this game at all lend itself to pop in and play for a bit and then leave?

You can solo the whole game 0-70 if you like and I would even advise you to do so if you follow a leveling guide because random people will just hold you back. Unless you totally suck at hitting a few buttons in rotation or you waste alot of time exploring, you can get to 70 in 5-6 days played (that's in hours). Once you get to 70 things change. You can still do tons of quest by yourself, work on your Epic flying mount, solo pvp to earn honor points and work on your skill, work on professions etc. But at some point if you want to get better gear you need to do dungeons which require 5, 10, or 25 people depending where you go. You can join a guild and you should have no problem finding people to group with, many smaller guilds schedule the 10 man stuff to make sure they get a decent group and every raiding guild has a 25 man schedule. When you make friends you can form an arena team and do some really competitive pvp for some really good gear as well, and in patch 2.4 you will be much more competitive right from the strart by being able to purchase blue pvp sets and also use 10 man dungeon tokens to buy Season 1 epic stuff (pvp gear has very different attributes than dungeon gear to make you better at fighting other players).

But the game is extremely time consuming, everything that is worthwhile takes lots of doing over and over. There are shortcuts and you can certainly powergame it if you know the right people. For instance when I came back to WoW for a while last fall I got run though SSC and TK to get my Vials and BT attunement on the first day and then the next day went straight to Hyjal and BT, but I already had many friends in that same guild from the BWL, AQ40, and Naxx days. It would have taken someone who just hit 70 and didn't know anybody at least a couple of months to get these Vials and most likely longer. For a new player it can be very intimidating, but in patch 2.4 they are removing attunement requirements for all raid dungeons so you will be able to go in right away as long as you have a group that wants to take you. There are many guides and mods and lots of information that will help a lot, and I would STRONLGY suggest you follow a leveling guide and get set up with some key mods because it will save you literally weeks of wasted time. But it you do take the time to learn the game and develop your character it can be an amazing experience, fighting huge bosses that take 30 minutes to kill with 25 people working together (it was even better with 40) can be a lot of fun. Since you already bought the game and have 30 days free, it can't hurt to try it and see what you think, and you can stack a 10 day free trial with the 30 you get from retail and get 40 free.

The problem with joining a big guild is that you will have to play almost every day too keep up with the people around you, and you can't just play for 30-45 min and log out because even a 5 man dungeon can take over an hour not counting travel time, wipe recovery, afk, etc... And raid dungeons are scheduled multiple nights a week for at least 3-4 hours straight, and you need to play more before that to prepare yourself with enough gold to pay repair costs and make/buy/farm potions and other consumables. When we were learning Patchwerk back in the 60 days (a really hard cockblock boss if all 40 people didnt have enough gear), I was consuming almost 100 gold worth of potions every attempt every 20 minutes, its got pretty ridicuous. They changed all that suff now and 100G will should cover repair costs and consumables to last you a whole night through many many attempts. It was fun for me for a while because the experience of playing with 40 people in these truly massive and epic dungeons was so much different than any other game, but once you finish the dungeon you do it over and over every week so everyone can get the gear they need for the next one and it gets really old.

I highly recommend joining a guild. Just make sure that the one you choose is the right fit for you. I found two different guilds during my tenure in WoW. Both were excellent until internal turmoil killed them. Stupid petty arguments between a small group in the guild caused a couple people to leave the guild, which then caused a snowballing effect where others left being all pissed the first ones left, which in turn caused more people to leave. And after 20 people leave a guild of 50 or 75, it pretty much dissolves.

The two guilds I was in (while they were active) helped me not only learn my role as a warlock, but also helped me on the rare occasions I asked for help. And being in the right guild means you can almost always find a group willing to go on a raid as long as you aren't too picky with the instance.

I remember a string of about two weeks or so that the same group of 5 went to the same 4 instances in rotation. We were trying to help a couple people get better gear, and it certainly helped with experience (the first time I did an instance was with a group of strangers, and they chewed my ass for being a noob despite me telling them upfront it was my first time).

Part of being an MMO dictates that at some point you will end up needing other people to accomplish some goals. Not everything, but some things. I would say that if you're a solo player try another game genre.

I have 5 level 70s, and the 60-70 was so much incredibly better than 1-60 that its not even funny. The lore may imply sci fi, but the zones were all filled with demons, critters, monsters, and everything exactly the way it was in the original game. I dunno about you but I never saw any spaceships in terrokar, zangamarsh, blade's edge, etc. If you want to complain about netherstorm, I had no problem with the way the "technology" fit into the lore. And that kind of tech is no more out of place than the goblin technology that's all over vanilla wow either.

The game is screwed up in the way that purples are completely free and all of my alts have full sets of purple gear with almost no effort, but the gameplay and the new zones and instances are great. I've done every instance at the time it was released, from MC to my guild opening the AQ gates to naxx, to killing illidan and downing sunwell bosses on the ptr. Raiding is so much better in 25 mans and the dungeons and fights are just as cool if not much better.

you want to become a god and own non god players. and to be able to prevent others from obtaining your god gear.

I quit WoW because after we finished Karazhan a year ago... I realized that PvE in the game would just be a grind and not fun... and the PVP in WoW has always sucked.

Ok it didnt always suck... it was fun when the game first came out and we hit lvl 40 and proceeded to gank people...

World PVP sucked once battlegrounds came out....and that killed WoW for me.

I agree , TBC did destroy WoW, its just not fun anymore, the instances are mediocre I miss doing Scholo and Stratholme, were It didnt matter if you had good gear , no you cant even get into any of the high lvl stuff unless you have dedicated hours upon hours of getting "geared" for them, Im still playing but am canceling my account by the end of the month in preparation for Age of Conan.

Idk, i guess i just miss the epic experience of a 40 man raid.. not the every player counts aspect of 10-25 man raids.

Yeah I love having useless pieces of shit in my raid do nothing beneficial, do no preparation, and know nothing about the encounters yet still experience the same content and get the same rewards as me. Yeah, I really miss that part of old school raiding.

Your definition of "epic experience" really means "I want a free ride."

Sure. BC actually helped rectify that. Pre-BC, non-raiders were pretty much canon fodder in every game aspect. With badge rewards, heroics, and 10-man instances, casuals actually really good end-game options available. I'm currently MTing halfway through Black Temple (currently the last raid zone), and I still wear five badge rewards and two crafted pieces, meaning half my gear is obtainable to anyone who can do a 5-man instance (repeatedly).

I do agree that WoW PvP has never been nearly as good as it should be. BGs solved a problem yet created a new one; the world is so vast and ill-suited for PvP that world PvP is boring, sparse, and aimless, put us in a BG and now we have constant action but now we've taken out persistence and meaning which is the staple of MMOs (e.g. you take over an "area" and no one gives a crap; just load into the next BG). Arenas are actually really cool, but it's something that should be simply one feature of a PvP-rich world, not the entire focus.

They are bringing Azeroth back bigtime in the WoTLK, don't worry. The addicts will get a massive dose.

It will be more of the same old shit, which in the eyes of the majority is not really a bad thing.

As for the issue of raiders versus casual players, I don't really think the issue comes down to time, I think it comes down to sheer mind-numbing boredom. An instance is cool the first couple of times you do it, but then the learning process for the encounters, being stymied again and again and having to do wipe recovery over and over for each boss encounter was quite possibly the least fun, most mind-numbing thing I've ever done. Then you finally get the instance on farm status, and you start to strive to find good excuses for things to do on scheduled raid nights just to ensure that you don't have to endure another few hours of painstaking boredom.

Frankly, I find sitting around staring at a wall less painful and boring than raiding.

This thread seems to be nothing more than whining from people who failed to:

A: Be good at playing the game(how hard is that, seriously)
B: Raid pre-TBC

Just seems like a lot of bitterness.

TBC has made every whiner's wish come true regarding getting gear without having to raid. Getting PVP gear takes the same amount of effort as PVE gear(time wise). The caveat of PVP gear is it is PVE specific. Sure, some pieces are great for PVE, but not really because a lot of points are wasted on STA and Resilience.

The game is so much easier and so much more appealing to the non-raider than it ever was. Shit, people are doing PUG Karazhan run's now(which after 2.4 you wont need an attunement for) which only go for a few hours. You can get about 20 Heroic Badges from there which helps you get badge loot which is VERY comparable to PVE Raid loot.

If you don't like the game, great, don't play it. The game is now geared towards casuals and raiders equally.

you want to become a god and own non god players. and to be able to prevent others from obtaining your god gear.

FFXI (the mmorpg I currently play) doesn't have PvP. So it is nothing about some ego-trip owning non god players. If I wanted to do that I'd just go play CoD4 or CS:S. I want there to be gear that if I obtain it puts me into a diffrent "wealth class" as the rest of the server. And then if I do all that work then I don't want it to be shitted away with some 1/2 ass released expansion that throws away a year (or two) of work.

What they are doing to WoW is just like what they did to the CCG Magic The gathering. They released over powered expansions that forced you to buy the expansions to keep up. Yeah sure your deck was good (or even godly) at the time but now it'll get ripped by the average deck of 50 cent cards.

I refuse to play a game the says "All of your work will be undone in the next expansion". I play MMORPGs because what I do tonight makes me stronger tommorow night and that 6 months from now the work I put in will still mean something.

And for the record, I'm not in the "ultra-elite" class of FFXI players who have one or more stage 5 relic weapons. I am in the "upper" class because of hard work, not because I played 17 hours a day for two weeks straight right after the latest expansion was released.

Part of being an MMO dictates that at some point you will end up needing other people to accomplish some goals. Not everything, but some things. I would say that if you're a solo player try another game genre.

I love to play with other folks, I just continuously read about people getting chewed out or yelled at because they don't know what they're doing, i'd like to know what i'm doing before I go joining others and looking foolish.

Personally I love what TBC did for WoW. I hated having to do 40 mans to gear people up. I enjoy raiding, but I like having options for obtaining gear outside of run MC 20 times until the bulk of your guild is geared up, then do the same thing in BWL, etc. Now instead of gear checks the encounters require more team work and coordination. The gear gap from level 60 blues to level 60 epics was just too big.

They reduced the gap between blue quality and epics, made blues actually worth wearing, and then gave us more options for obtaining gear. For 25 mans I ask that people get a bulk of their gear outside of big raids. Between heroic badges, Karazhan / ZA drops, heroic drops, crafting, reputations, and pvp there are a large variety of ways to gear up. I just got my 3rd character, a paladin, to 70 back in January and he's already geared enough to heal through T5 zones, and I'm working on his tanking set now. My mage has 5 pieces of tailored gear that will last until T6 zones, and his pvp weapon is similar quality. I raid on my warrior that is main tank for my guild so I like that I can be self reliant and gear up my other characters with small group encounters.

Are some aspects of the game too easy? Probably. Is keeping the game casual friendly good? Absolutely. It's easy enough that anyone can learn to play, but still has challenging encounters like high end raids and arenas to keep the hard core challenged. My only real complaint is they don't add new content fast enough, but if it's a choice between quality and quantity I'll stick to their high quality content.

The only bad part in BC in my opinion is that the old raid instances need some scaling to bring people back to them. Perhaps heroic difficulties with better loots for 60+. I never really finished ANY raids and I got invited to a NAXX raid this Saturday (I don't even know where it is but I took the shortcut to attune to it for giggles)

Other then that, it took a few months to level up my first alliance character. I didn't use a leveling guide, I just enjoyed the ride and enjoyed the scenery and exploration. Being a Resto Sham, I get my ass handed to me in PVP but I can put up a good fight if the bullshit factor is minimized. I don't use macros so that's propably why I get beat down so much.

Other then occasional annoyance with PVP I mostly enjoy the game. Just stockpiling som cash for when WotLK comes out. Got my Epic flyer the other day and already replaced 600+ gold. Also goofing around with lowbie alts. I enjoy it, though I feel the alliance baby out too much in Battlegrounds and refuse to work at them.
