Someone beat that effing' jet-bike level from Battletoads:

I got this link from a friend earlier today, and it brought back nightmares from my youth. I honestly don't remember if I ever beat that level, I just know it was a pain in the ass.

This leads me to a possible discussion: Any old games/levels/etc. that you never actually finished? The one that is still sort of a huge chip on my shoulder is the original Blaster Master for NES. I absolutely loved that game, but I always failed when I got to the last boss. It was especially aggravating when my friend rented it and beat it in three days. I had that damn game for years and I never beat it. If it shows up on the VC I'll be all over it.

I remember beating that goddamn level after many attempts and blood blisters on my thumbs. Those Nintendo controllers really held up after being thrown at the wall so many times.

Fester's Quest!!! Has anyone ever beat that damn game? No saves, very difficult, if you died, you had to start all over at the beginning. The furthest i got was the fourth boss.

I beat Festers Quest :)

But I never did finish the first Adventure Island. Damn that game.

back in the day when shit was built to last.
I had a couple of friends in elementary school that wanted to play Gauntlet for the NES one day. The guy who owned the game couldn't get it to work. So he banged it on a bunch of shit and threw it against a few walls. It stayed intact, but still didn't work. Eventually, he got so pissed off, he grabbed his hockey stick and asked if my other friend wanted to go out and play. So they played some street hockey with a copy of Gauntlet.

Amazingly, that's what it took for the game cartridge to break into pieces.

In short, I agree. :D

Golgo 13 I never beat it. Not that it was very hard, just that I got Golgo and Metal Gear the same day, then shortly after my brother and I found Blades of Steele. BoS and Gauntlet took up all our free time until the snes came out. Now that I think about it, I don’t remember finishing Gauntlet either. That game just kept going and going and going and going and going…………….

I've never played BattleToads. Over the years I've always heard how difficult the game was and now that I see a level of the game I can see why.

lol i never beat any of my games when I was a kid, the first game I ever beat was the mickey mouse game on SNES, and I did that with the help of a friend playing 2 player...

I've beaten that level. That game was a pain the in ass. I think I got as far as the pipe level or the snakes. I always wanted to do the level with teh unicycle things. Hell I just wanted to beat it and never got to. Guess I should try and find an emulator and play it again.

i'd like to say for the record, i have beaten ninja gaiden 3 for the NES. to this day it remains my proudest video game accomplishment.

Yeah those NES cartridges sure were resistant to dust .

It wasn't dust that caused the problems it was the springs inside the nintendo that became compressed over time not allowing proper contact with the catridge.

Opening up the machine and bend the springs back out fixed this issue.

The "blow into the NES" catridge thing never did any good we just thought it did.

Not just Ninja Gaiden... the last (or I assume it's the last!) level of Ninja Gaiden! I remember getting to some monster that was your father or something and dying... and being SO pissed off that I just quit after a few dozen tries. I even got this far on Virtual Console and never finsihed.

Contra wasn't so bad, especially with the konamii code. It go pretty wild in some spots, but everything was pretty predictable.

I think Blaster Master is one of my all time favorite games. It was one of the first games I ever played that you had to go through the levels and actually come back to the beginning to get to the end. That blew my mind when I figured it out because it wasn't the typical linear progression through the world.

Megaman was ungodly tough back in the day, but I can finish it with my eyes closed now. I still think some of the sequels are tough games.

I remember Rush'n Attack being tough. I don't remember if I got bored with it or if it was actually tough though.

And lets not count out some of the end bosses in Punch Out!

You sir, have just ruined some of the fondest memories of my childhood.

Yea it was a pain in the ass.

Milon's Secret Castle was one of the hardest games I ever played. Think I beat it once.

Their were a bunch of nes games and what not I never beat or only did once. The ability to save your game and come back to it really makes a difference.

you guys gotta be kidding me, i can beat the jet bikes first try, the surfing is really fun too, and the snake pit. Ive never been able to beat that rat race level where you botta beat that dude down the tunnel before he blows up the whole place. so hard

This is also directed at the guy who said blowing on them didn't work: blowing on them and hitting the NES sure seemed to work fine for my unit ;) Maybe I was just lucky. Either way, I think my parents got it for me when I was like 5, I am not 24. Still works fine, in fact a friend and I fired up some Blades of Steal the other day heh. Give me that over my RROD'ing 360 anyday :(

... I kid, I love my 360. I just don't like the dying part.

As for games I never beat, I always lost somewhere towards the end of the original Ninja Turtles for the NES. Can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but I am sure there were more.

I still have memories of "1943: Battle of midway" the arcade version.

It pissed me off soo many times. I could make it all the way to the final mission (or at least I think it was the final mission) on one quarter.

The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Seriously... f*%$ that game. I still have nightmares about making it almost to the end of the driving part and hitting a rock in the middle of the road.

i used to play that game all the time and could never get passed it. Then like 10 years late i tried it again and did it a few times.

Kid Icarus was hard as hell, but I beat it finally on VC when it came out.
TMNT on NES was one I never beat. I also never beat Spellcaster on Sega, either :(

That was 2 minutes of pure hell. I don't know how many times I tried to beat that as a kid.

I hooked up my NES last summer and played JAWS, because I could never beat that game. And what transpired was probably my greatest gaming accomplishment.. Not only did I beat the game, I did it in 1 life and nailed Jaws with the bow of the boat on the first try. It all happened so fast, but I think I fell to my knees and cried tears of joy.

Megaman 1 and 4 were pretty insurmountable for me back in the day. A couple of years ago I played them again through an emulator and beat them though. I still play Megaman 2 occasionally, I've become so good at it that I can literally finish the game in under 30 minutes.

PS: That Battletoads level doesn't look that hard, I think I'll give it a shot... :D

I remember going apeshit over my cousin's house with that game, pretty much for the same reason.

Another one I never beat was Legacy of the Wizard. That was pretty nuts back in the day. I think I came pretty close though.

I'll back up ninja gaiden III as damn hard. the last level/boss is so tough. I remember my brother and I playing for countless hours trying to beat that. It got to the point where I'm not sure if we knew the correct techique or what but we borrowed a game genie and had infinite lives and an extended life cheat going and still never beat it, we never found an infinite life no dying cheat. I never played that game again.

I've got another vote for Ghosts and Goblins. That game was insane... I tried playing it years later with no luck either. Maybe I just suck?

I remember beating this level when I was 10....It brings back so much memories of frustration and throwing the controller on the carpet =/

Never played battletoads...
But I have beaten Ninja Gaiden a LONG time ago. The only hard part was the end bosses. Plus there was a spot on one of the levels where you could get infinite lives if I remember right...
I can beat punch-out pretty regularly. The SNES version, Super Punch-Out, I think was quite a bit harder.
Double Dragon was hard as hell. I finally beat it after right around 17 years. Hehe. The last two bosses were ridiculous.
Beat Ghosts and Goblins also... many times. It was pretty hard as well.
I think Ikari Warriors II was the one that I really could never even get close to beating the final boss. Stupid swords.
And I could NEVER beat TMNT. It was a huge accomplishment just to get past the electrified seaweed level.

The game I could never beat until a couple years ago was Blaster Master. My wife thought I'd gone insane when I finally did it though. I remember playing it when I was 12 or 13 and losing many nights of sleep just to makieit to the last level and dying on those clusters of stupid ninja star looking things.

Heh I made it past that a few times, but like I said, I never beat it. The timing on it was kinda tough. Losing after making it though that place just made you never want to play the game again lol. Though a week or so later I would always try it again. A bit after that you went into a warehouseish thing that was another place I only made it past once or twice. The two combined yeah... resulted in me never beating it :)
