I'm looking to get a new laptop. I really like the look of the MBP and I know they perform well. Recently my pc has been starting to act up (i built it about 6 years ago with no upgrades since) and I'm really interested in running bootcamp. My only reason is because I like to game, like CS/DOD:S, bf2, AOE III, occasionally some WoW. (my friends always seem to quit when I get interested) I also do alot of web and graphic design.

So my question is, will the bottom line MBP be able to play those games just fine?

* 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
* 120GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
* SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
* MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
* Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
* Accessory Kit

BTW, if I do get a MBP, I will automatically buy 4 gigs from somewhere else at the same time. I'm amazed at how much overhead apple has on a RAM upgrade.

To give you a picture with what I game with now:
a7n8x deluxe
AMD XP 2500 @ 2.2
Radeon 9800 Pro
1024mb GEIL pc-3200
120 + 80 gig seagate 7200rpm
audigy 2 ZS

That system has been a workhorse, and I play all the games except bf2 at medium to high settings at 1680x1050 (widescreen westinghouse 22")

Another question glossy or non-glossy?

I play all CS:S, DoD;S, TF2, and BF2 just fine on my MBP with the x1600. I ran the WoW demo in OS X and everything was smooth as well. It should be even better with the 8600GT. I bet you'll see quite an improvement over your desktop as the Source games are very CPU dependent.

My screen is glossy but this is a personal preference decision.

thats what i'm going for... you can't even buy the parts in my computer anymore

and i suppose i can go check out my university's computer store to see the difference

anyone else?

The base model Macbook Pro does pretty well with games.

I play Lord of the Rings Online, Portal, Half-Life 2, and Team Fortress 2 quite well on mine.

Half-Life 2 often exceeds 100fps at 1440x900 w/ high settings, TF 2 anywhere between 30 and 80, depending on the environment and number of players, I'd say it averages between 40-50.

Call of Duty 4 doesn't run very well, if I cut shadow and specular off and set things to normal detail, I get around 30-35 fps average at 1280x720.

I agree, the current MBP is a pretty solid computer and it'll outperform your current computer. I have the base model and it suits me just fine.

I'd go with the matte screen, I just don't like the glare on the glossy.

I've got the old CD model with a 256mb X1600 (Came as a free upgrade from the "base" model I bought from the apple refurb store!) and it handles Oblivion (native res, 4xaf 0xaa everything on high) just fine.

I also don't like the glossy screens. They're prettier, and have huge amounts of saturation (read: vibrant colours, but not accurate colours) but the glare killed it for me.

isn't their supposed to be new MBP coming out soon? 10.5.2 has new references to them. I wouldn't dive in just yet.

Sometime in the next two weeks, most likely. As early as the 12th (i.e. Tuesday) but probably no later than the 26th (if claims of an Apple event hold true).

Yea, then I really recommend waiting. Even if you still want that machine, you may be able to find it a few 100 cheaper =D

i don't plan on purchasing one any time soon... I'm just doing my researching/shopping around... the earliest would probably be late May because I need time to start saving and i'll be working my summer job (i'm just a soph in college) I just signed a lease for a house next year and i'm broke :eek:

I do think that the MBP will be much faster than your current rig, simply because of it's superior graphics card and CPU. I'd also go with the matte screen, I personally don't like glossy, even though glossy screens are pretty and all, the glare gets annoying. And I've played CS: Source on my emachines 3.3ghz Celeron just fine, so I imagine the MBP will be great.

so keep checking apple's site to see if they've release a new version of the mbp?

i have a boot camp question... would I be able to make a partition separate and independent from both the mac os and the windows os partitions? Basically so I could access my music and other files from each OS so I didn't have to duplicate them. Is that possible?

Macbook pro's have been updated. The base model now comes with a 2.4 Ghz dual core, 256MB ram in a Nividia GT8600, 2GB of ram, and a 200 GB HD.

All for 1,999. Less if you can get an educational discount.

I would say it is a solid investment.

Also, this will drop prices on the older models used/refurbished/clear out stock.

I have a 2.33 ghz model, which is 2 generations old now, and it does everything I want it to.

(BF2, oblivion, COD4 (low), TF2, etc)
