DELL 3008WFP for $1599 or less in Canada

After gathering all the evidence and talking to several csr's and kiosk sales rep's here's what I think might have happened with the price of the 3008WFP

The 3008wfp was going to be originally released in Canada for $1599, and then discounted to $1299 upon initial offering, when Dell Marketing found out that they would be the only ones to market with a new 30” in 2008, they decided to take advantage of this and offer the monitor at the prices you see today. What happened, was that this promotion campaign was never stopped in Canada, although this error has been fixed in the States, there are still flyers being printed in Quebec (For over a month now) that still show the discounted prices.

You don't really think they made the same error 4 times :rolleyes:

So basically if you really want this monitor now, call up Dell and rip them a new one, DO NOT BUY this monitor at the insane price of $2000. I’m sure the price will be back to normal within a few months time (When NEC’s and Samsung’s new 30”s come out).

If you live in Quebec, go to a Dell Kiosk, and bring the evidence, argue the point, Quebec has laws against falsely published prices.

This monitor is very nice indeed, there is a definite backlight bleeding problem (on mine it’s in the top center and bottom right) but only when you have a true black background; otherwise it’s just fine (I don’t think I have ever seen ANY LCD that didn’t have a bit of a bleed). It’s also true that this monitor is extremely bright in a dark rooms, I personally have the brightness set to 35 and it burns my eyes on pure white backgrounds. I love this monitor.

I am thinking about getting this monitor, but even at $1,650 (the discounted price floated around) I am hesitant. At $1,299 it would be a no brainer and would be sitting on my desk.

I think that Dell just decided to charge as much as possible on release and see who bites, after that they will lower the price and call it a sale. Then eventually they will drop the list price to something more befitting of Dell's image as a a discount computer manufacturer.

I set the brightness to 0 and the contrast to 37. Anything over that is too bright for me - white backgrounds start glowing and become blinding. Even at my settings the monitor is not that easy to look at in a dark room for text work/web browsing. It's really too bad that it's impossible to dim the backlight further.

As to the backlight bleed - I don't really have much of the normal type of bleed on mine. However, this new LG panel has this property where you see light glowing from different parts of the panel when you look at them at a certain angle. I've never seen it on other panels. It may be a property of this latest generation of IPS panel. My 30" Apple doesn't have this, but it does have some of the familiar classical bleed (which is not angle specific). It doesn't really bother me much. The thing I'm bothered about is the brightness.

Another thing I noticed when running some display calibration software is that the gamma and sharpness are wrong on the 3008WFP, but right on the 30" Apple. There doesn't seem to be a way to fix the gamma. It's possible to come close to fixing the sharpness by reducing it from 50 to 40, but this results in a slight degradation in small light characters over dark backgrounds. The Apple's sharpness is fine without this degradation. I think this problem has something to do with the signal processor used in the 3008WFP.

Overall I like the 3008WFP - it certainly has nicer colors than my Apple. However, the brightness issue is a royal pain - I have to sacrifice contrast, and I still get an image that's too bright. Also, because the backlight runs so bright, it generates a lot of heat even at the minimal setting, and probably consumes power accordingly as well. I don't understand what they were thinking - I can't imagine that this level of brightness could be right for anyone doing text/web work. It's great for video and games, but not for text unless you use it outside in the sun...
 
The brightness is part of the reason I want the older 3007-HC with a slightly lower brighness, that and it SHOULD be cheaper.
 
Mine is on the way now @ $1599. I called and went through small biz, pointed the guy I got at this thread.

He offered $1799 right away and after some discussion and checking with his mgr he was able to match the $1599 in the top ad here. He said he didn't know they could match Canada prices. I didn't press him on the $1299 because if you go to the link in the ad where it shows $1299, drill down and find a 3008WFP, it lists at $1749 there now.

I was considering buying one of these at $1999 but hated to do that knowing they can be had for a lot less. $1599 splits the diff between $1299 and $1999 and I feel ok about that.

For current owners, I believe this was mentioned before, for the back light bleeding, if you press up against the screen border where the bleeding is happening, you'll notice how it goes away.... Remember that this monitor is mostly made out of plastic (around the screen border the plastic is flexible)....and how much heat this sucker produces....now you know why this was suppose to be introduced at $1599.... if you purchased this monitor for more than $1599 and you are within your 15 day (or 30 day depends on where you bought it from) return period, guess what, return it....

News flash, guess what dell is doing with the Total Satisfaction Policy, they have started to charge you for the convience of buying there products.... how special of them.....

I was able to get one for my company for $1499 after showing them these ads. I don't understand why it takes negotiation to get a company to honour THEIR OWN ADS :mad:

In stock, overnight free shipping, apparently. If anyone is looking for a solid comparison of the 3008WFP to a CRT for input lag, that is one of the first things I am planning on measuring. Any requests for tests to run feel free to PM me and I'll see what I can do.

After some argument I was able to re-negotiate the $1299 price. Almost got 5% off of that price too, but I'm happy saving the $200. I had to be transferred to a new sales rep to get the deal.
 
very funny thread knowing that we have to pay 2850 dollars in Belgium for this same monitor :(

I just wanted to let you know I was able to buy a 3008WFP today for $1599 even though I am in the US and not in Canada. I called multiple times and was given many excuses, reasons why they couldn't sell me the monitor for anything but $2000.

The first call was through the home office section (big mistake). I emailed the sales rep this link and the other link and after discussing this with his manager for 10 minutes, I was told they couldn't sell it to me for anything but $2000. They told me "these ads were photoshopped"....... lol

The next 3-4 calls were all to the Small Business Section. Each call was different and the reasons all varied. Finally, one sales rep put me through to some manager who was in charge of giving discounts or something. She said she could give me a discount but couldn't go lower than $1699. I told her I wasn't paying for something that others are getting cheaper. (I was hoping I could get it down to $1599 as shown in the first ad. I had tried hard to see if $1299 was possible but it didn't seem so). I told her I wasn't interested but thanks anyway. She tried to keep me on the phone when I was so quick to say no thank you.

Called back an hour later (Small Business), told the sales rep I wanted a price match on this particular monitor and that Canada has this monitor for much cheaper. Mentioned the flyers/ads in Canada and told him I was quoted an hour before by a manager at $1699 so I wanted to see what the best possible price they could give me once again. He put me on hold and 5 minutes later came back and told me the lowest he could give it to me was $1599. He couldn't go any lower than that. I said great and ordered the monitor.

It's amazing to me how many different prices/reasons/excuses I received all within the same company. If your in the US and want this monitor right now, I would call up the Small Business section and see what you can get. You might have to call multiple times to get a lower price as I did, but if you get lucky enough, you should be able to get it a lower price than $2000 here in the US.

Thanks Buda for bringing this to my attention as I wouldn't of bought this monitor because of the $2000 price tag if I didn't see this thread. Thank you so much. You can copy/paste this post to the Canada site if you think it might help as I am not a member to that site.

One word of advice(for US sales)......Do not call Dell Home, only Small Business. They have a sales quota and are eager to meet it. I had to call twice today to get the right deal. As Buda said under no circumstances pay 2K for this monitor.

2 Kiosks in my city, both denied me as an email had been sent to them saying DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SELL THIS MONITOR FOR $1299


And yes, they had the english flyer with $1299 advertised.

Fuck Dell for repeatedly advertising that price and refusing to honor it.
 
Sheesh, I am in Canada, I would like to get the 3007-hc for the US price. It is a constant $1600 here.

Dell would piss a lot less people off if they harmonized their deals. Instead we have Canadians pissed that they can't get American prices and Americans Pissed they can't get Canadian pricies. How screwed up is that?

I want a 3007-HC, but there is no way I will pay 50% more for it, because I live 100 miles in the wrong direction.
