Upgrading from 4600+ to...?

Hello everyone,

Today I was installing a new HSF (Zalman 9700 CNPS). When removing the old HSF (stock), the processor came up with the heatsink and bent a few pins. So of course I'm looking to get something new.

My primary use is gaming, my secondary use is 3d applications such as Blender and Autodesk Inventor. I'd like to spend <$200. I'm willing to overclock a little bit (though I have no previous experience), but I'm not looking to "cheat" a processor or risk stability for a few hundred Mhz more.

I've heard/read good things about the 5000+ BE, but I know the cache is smaller than on the 6400+.

Anyways, specs:
Asus M2N SLI-deluxe
eVGA geforce 7950 GX2
2GB Corsair DDR2-800
Soundblaster X-fi Xtreme Music
Enermax Liberty 620W
Seagate 160GB and 250GB
Zalman 9700 CNPS

Less than $200 even gives you the options of the 6400+ Black Edition ($159), and the quad core phenom 9500 ($190). The Black Edition 9600 Phenom is $240. Just something to think about. Prices via Newegg.

Going just to a 5000+ from a 4600+ won't be a noticeable enough difference unless you are very good at OC'ing.
 
...how bad were the pins bent? That can be fixed with either a credit card (all pins in a row bent) or a mechanical pencil (individual pins bent). If they were absolutely mangled, however, I'd understand.:D
 
Thanks for the help. And some of the pins were pretty badly mangled (bent almost completely horizontal). Cheers!
 
I went from a 4600+ to a 6400+ BE and the difference was pretty noticable. I do a little Inventor as well and this should make you happy for less than $200
 
I would consider going for the Phenom - the price increase isn't that bad, but I'm a little apprehensive:
-heat issues?
-work in an AM2 motherboard?
-I know it gets slightly better per core than an Athlon X2, but will the 9600 be able to outperform the 6400+ in most applications?

-Phenoms run cool, heats is far from the biggest problem with them.
-M2N-SLI Bios 0304 has support for the Phenoms 9600, how well it supports the Phenom is another thread.
-Gaming the seem about equal, in multimedia and synthitic the P9600 has the edge
