Asus Striker II Formula 780i

Due to my bad experiences with 680i SLI reference boards I'll probably steer clear of reference 780i SLI boards in my own machines. Therefore I am most looking forward to the release of the ASUS Striker II Formula.

Damm thats unlucky, when i burn up 2 of the same mobo i go crazy

Well to be fair almost half of those were DOA. So I didn't burn up that many, but rather I went through that many. The other half burned up with the exception of 2. One died to a coolant leak while the machine was running and the other is still running to this day.

I tolerated them because the reference boards overclocked better and were more compatible with different memory modules. The Striker isn't super fond of the OCZ memory I'm using that I have two sets of. At one point that memory was very expensive. More than the boards were so I kept using the reference boards in the hope I'd finally get a good one.

hehe.... Dan must go through mobos like hookers go through horny rich guys.. or something like that. ;)

I really do. I tend to keep processors closer to a year but motherboards and video cards get replaced all the time if something better comes along.

Dan, do you actaully buy any of your hardware, or is it stuff sent to ya to try out etc etc. lol...

Actually I buy over 95% of it. In the last year I've received two motherboards for free and one CPU.

This year I've purchased the following items I can recall:

Coolermaster Cosmos
Coolermaster Stacker 830
Antec Solo
Antec P182
Antec P190

EVGA 680i SLI x10 (I ate the cost on two of these and the rest were returned to the retailer for a refund or exchange.)

2xOCZ Flex XLC PC2-9200 DDR2-1150MHz 2GB memory kits.
1xPatriot Extreme Performance PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHz EPP memory modules 4GB kit

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7200

2xATI Radeon X1950Pro 256MB (Not 100% sure on this, they might have been purchased just outside of a year ago.)
EVGA 8800GTS 320MB Superclocked
BFG 8800GTX OC 768MB

LSI MegaRAID 8308ELP PCIe RAID controller

Logitech G15 keyboard x2 (One new version and one old version.)
Logitec G7 mouse
2xLogitec G5 mouse
Logitec G9 mouse
Creative Fatal1ty keyboard

4x150GB Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM drives
3xSamsung 16x SATA DVD-R/RW drives.

Thermaltake Toughpower 1200watt PSU

2xThermalright Ultra 120 Extreme heat sinks
Zalman CNPS 8000 Heat sink and fan

Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty

Nostromo Speed Pad N52

A couple of UPSes and other things that I probably can't think of. Most of my hardware is bought by me. I'd probably buy more if I didn't have other hobbies that I enjoy nearly as much or more than computer hardware.

you and me have to be 2 of the people who spend alot on their hobbies :D

ok, i need to take a trip down to your place an see your armory then... lol

It doesn't actually take as many weapons as you might think in order to equal more money than I spent on computer parts.

i do the same. i have had the q6600 since the price decrease (april?) but at least 5 or 6 mainboards (just for primary machne) since then. also 1 8800gts, 2x 8800gt and 2x 8800gts g92. i had great experience with my 5 evga 680i's so when i was looking for a quick replacement for my doa from newegg dfi x38 (since removed from newegg site for some reason) i tried to get 780i but none in stock anywhere. i will prob get a reference board, prob an evga, when they become more readily available.

QFT, a nice rifle or two adds up realll quick...

Well my Colt LE6920 AR-15 build is already more than $2000 total. I've also got a Bushmaster that's about $1500 or so. My Springfield TRP was $1300 and my Desert Eagle was $1190. So in four guns alone I've got more cash invested than I do in my gaming machine. (Monitor excluded.)

I am also waiting for the Striker II.

I've been very happy with my eVGA 680i, it's been running strong for a year, and hasn't eaten any memory... I couldn't be happier with it. That being said, I feel no mobo manufacturer has cleaner, more managable layouts than ASUS... after building a few rigs, it's amazing how much more important board layout becomes after each and every build.

Can't wait for that tri-sli goodness.

ah I'm not a rich guy and I have come close to what dan spent this year. It is really just a question of what you enjoy doing most. A lot of people just blow their money on cars or something. I blow mine on computer gear. Now that I am 21 though, I think I am going to get a pistol, either the Glock 19, or a USP (friend of mine can get h&k weapons at cost).

Rich in my eyes ;)

Wait till marriage/kid/house and cars come into play.

Hehe, I do the same thing.

Did anyone try the 780i? Is it the same thing as the 680i other then pcie 2.0?

So Dan, stay away from XFX 780i? what about the Asus P5N-T DELUXE 780i

I didn't say to stay away from the XFX or EVGA 780i SLI boards. The reference boards I'll probably avoid in my own machine just because of my previous experiences with them. Then again the 780i SLI reference boards might be totally fixed and kick a lot of ass. I don't know yet as I've never messed with one. I'm simply far more interested in the Striker II Formula than the reference boards.

I am also waiting for the Striker II.

I've got one board like this. The rest are junk. I too am fond of ASUS though they've had some less than perfect or even less than stellar models from time to time.

I think dan is just a rich guy :p

Hardly. I do make a pretty good living between my two jobs.

I would blow money on cars if I had more money than I do know. I've done it in the past too. I really enjoy it but I enjoy guns and computer hardware more. As for the Glock, I can't stand their ergonomics. They feel like a 2x4 in my hand and that grip angle is horrid. I'd take a serious look at the Springfield XD as it is as tough as the Glock, as reliable (so far) and certainly more comfortable in the hands. The XD has a more conventional grip angle than the Glock does. The H&K USP's are fine but I hate their mag release.

Wait till marriage/kid/house and cars come into play.

Screw that. I don't really believe in marriage. It just means I'd have to give up half my crap when kicking the woman to the curb which always seems to happen eventually. Kids are something I don't find remotely interesting. I don't think I could enjoy or remotely be happy with something like that.

Hehe, I do the same thing.

Did anyone try the 780i? Is it the same thing as the 680i other then pcie 2.0?

It uses the same silicon as the 680i SLI. It really should have been called 680i SLI Redeux or something. It really isn't a new chipset. All they did was add another chip to provide PCIe 2.0 support and additional PCIe lanes to give the board its' three full speed PCIe x16 slots. You don't even need the 780i SLI board for 3-Way SLI. I've been running it now on the 680i SLI board for weeks now.

Dear god i hope not anytime soon. :D

No joke. Married with children=BAD

I hate to take this thread further off topic, but since it's already there...

I've already got two kids that I can't return, but I've been divorced for a few years (although I have custody). I know for a fact that most women don't understand anything about the amount of money guys can spend on computer hardware. I'm getting remarried later this year, and am in a hurry to get my new system done before I have to disclose how much this little hobby costs me... :D

also the h&k mags are like $50, which is ridiculous for a mag. What I would really like is a single stack 1911, but those go for like 3k, which is more than I am willing to drop on a handgun. I was briefly looking at browning high power 9mm, and was briefly interested in the mk-23, that is until I saw one. That pistol is gigantic.

and meh, I would just skip the disclosure, tell her that it is your "private" bank account, and just do what you will with it. Get the statements online and whatnot. Most people really have no clue how much hardware costs anyhow.

As it is new girlfriends bitch about how much money my hobbies cost. I tell them that if they have a problem with it they know where the door is. The key to being happy is having enough backbone to live your life the way you want to. If a chick wants to follow a long then they can but they won't tell me what to do. I'll have none of that.

Finally someone shares my philosophy. I can die alone and be happy. Infact most my childhood I've had my parents around and great parenting but I could give 2 fucks about a wife unless she's not a hindrance. Why? because I was raised by a great mom and dad and I think that when I look at society from a 20 year olds eyes (I'm 20) and I see that most females are attention-craving whores I kind of get sick of their get-up. Keep in mind I'm a pretty good looking guy and my parents fund ALL my hobbies so for me it's a matter of picking one I like; I haven't done that though... Why? I simply don't want to be tied down, and as Dan said: IF she follows you, great. Don't follow her. I'm sick and tired of seeing guys that are whipped and give in to every whim because their wife is either: 1. A trophy wife. or 2: The wife controls the household, even if the guy bought it.... I see no sense in it, being a trustfundbaby I am going to get her to sign a prenup if I decide to get married. I think I'll feel bad if I don't because my mom wants grand-kids and I can atleast give her that.... Just not now :p

Ironically, she thinks it's kinda hot when I talk about stuff she doesn't understand. She knows I'm passionate about stuff like this, and has promised not to interfere. However, I think she's comparing it to buying clothes for herself... She may see value in a few hundred spent shopping for herself, but I doubt she'll see the value in $3000 spent at Newegg. After all, aren't computers just for email and stuff?

Well women that are your age are usually stupid and shallow. Having a serious relationship with a woman that old is a serious problem. Most of them are unfaithful and have stability issues. Women are like Windows. It takes several patches and a service pack before they are reliable enough to use every day without issues.

You have your head on straight it seems like. Prenups are almost always the way to go unless you marry a woman with more money and assets than you. In which case it is probably better that you don't get into one. However if she is smart she'll bring it up. As far as providing grandchildren, well I've got family that are dissappointed in the fact that I don't want children, and I know my GF's family doesn't like my stance on it either. Still I live my life for me and not for them. I don't want children in my life and they better tread lightly on the subject because they won't like how I'll react to out side pressure. That usually results in me telling people to F#@& themselves.

I also know some whipped guys who do whatever their women tell them to do. They are always home or they have to include their women in everything they do. My women need to understand that sometimes I'll go hang out with friends and they are simply not invited. A man needs time to himself or time with his buddies. The influence of estrogen needs to be kept to a minimum.

When I was 20 and younger I dated older women. So much better in bed and easier to deal with. A year ago or so when I didn't have a regular girlfriend I was real popular with all the younger girls. Ages 18-22 just flocked to me. It is kind of a weird situation. When I was thier age the younger chicks just weren't interested in me all that much. Now that I'm older they want me. Older women won't go for me anymore because I won't have children and get married which is what they are all looking for. Another problem is that women my age (28) all seem to have children now. I'll have none of that either.

My women generally don't understand my hobbies or know why I feel the need to spend so much money on them. I always tell them that it is just like clothes or shoes, and jewlery. They tend to back off when I tell them that.

Anyway I'm on the lookout for the Striker II Formula and as soon as I see one I'll be snatching it up. I've found XFX reference 780i SLI boards locally in limited numbers but I have put off buying one. I've been tempted but I have a feeling that the ASUS is the way to go. My Striker despite being a terrible overclocker is really an excellent board and hasn't given me any problems. I can't say the same about all the 680i SLI reference boards I've had which were DOA or died on me in a matter of two months or less.
