when it comes to laptops... i don't really know what to look for. I'm looking to get a portable laptop with a good battery life. This will be mainly used for web, email, music, dreamweaver, etc, and maybe the occasional game. I have a gaming desktop for that :D

it doesn't need an optical drive.
lightweight and slim
a descent size screen, nothing wide screen or huge
budget is sub $1000

any suggestions are welcome, so please help me out here! thanks!

EDIT: i'm a college student... so the cheaper the better, i'm willing to sacrifice performance (as long as its not slow as hell) for portability and price. XP would be nice too

X series thinkpad :) Looks like they are on sale right now for right at $1000 new but you could always get a used much cheaper or surf sites that have pre-built models any you may get lucky.

What other kind of laptop is there except portable? :D

I recommend a Thinkpad if you can afford them. If not, HP makes some good laptops.

I suggest you take a look at the Dell Vostro 1400. They're great laptops for the price, and they've also got some very nice deals going on at the moment.

thanks for the vostro recommendation

for web, email, music, dreamweaver, MS office will these specs work out nicely?

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition, SP2
14.1 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Display with TrueLife™
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
120GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability
128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS
Dell Exclusive MediaDirect™ Instant Play Software Application
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card
No Camera
Integrated High Definition Audio
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

all this for $799

$599 if i downgrade to a 1.4GHZ and a 56 WHr 6 cell battery

question: is there a huge difference between a 6 cell and a 9 cell battery in terms of running time?

anyone know how long this deal goes on for?

thanks

the 9-cell will give you about 1-1.5 hours of battery life over the 6-cell. I suggest you go for it if you intend to use the laptop on the go a lot. As for the specs you picked, they will do very nicely.

Ever see Dell's 20" "laptop"? ;)

My assumption (and yes,I know all the dangers of assuming) is that the OP wants something 15.4" or smaller. Right now I'm looking for something 14.1 or smaller cause my 15.4 is a bit chunky to keep hauling to and fro. I've been looking here (avadirect) and the price to spec ratio looks incredible. They also get good ratings on resellerratings. Anyone else have suggestions?

Peace
