Loud Hardware Beep when Backspacing in empty input field (Win XP)

I'm not sure what is doing this, I have a sound card and it works, I'm listening to Flogging Molly right now, but when I backspace into an empty input field my computer emits a lard hardware beep, as in it sounds like that beep that you get when your desktop boots up, only louder.

Anyone have a clue? I have a Dell E1705 and Windows XP Media Center
 
Download the the TweakUI powertoy from Microsoft and disable "beep on errors" from the general settings.

Windows has an annoying tendency of beeping at you if you set set the Windows sound scheme to 'no sound' (or if you have no soundcard installed).
 
I was going to suggest disconnecting the internal speaker since it's not used except for diagnosing startup problems, but then I noticed that you've got a laptop...

Do the beeps happen regardless of what software you're using? Or is there a particular piece of software that beeps?
 
How about this:

Start -- Run --Regedit.

Go to Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound
Find "Beep" regkey
Set it to 0 (Disabled)
Exit Registry and Reboot
 
On second thought, I'm not sure if that controls hardware beeps as opposed to system beeps coming out of the sound card (like "ding" and "chord" and those types). Might be worth a try anyway, I dunno.

I have noticed that it is mostly Pidgin (formerly Gaim)
 
Which is it?
According to your title, it happens when you backspace in an empty field, but then you say it happens when you backspace into an empty field.
Since I've never been able to backspace into an empty field (must usualy shift+tab), I'll assume your title is correct.
Most every machine I've ever been on does this, although not in all applications. It's trying to tell you that the field is indeed empty & you can't backspace any farther.
 
My thinkpad used to do this, or something similar. First look in BIOS for an option to disable, then look in the device manager for a device called beep (I beleive it is hidden). This might be thinkpad specific though. Here is a page with some more detailed instructions.
 
Well, no, actually it was just talking about disabling the system beep and mentions that in this particular case it was occurring on a pop-up. The person describes it as the same beep as the one you get from the post (describing the sound of it) -- not that it was happening at post. So I took the solution as being for disabling the system beep wherever it may happen. Although maybe you're right that the solution only addresses a post beep, 'cause it has the word "Start" in there (as in, the post startup beep?). Hmm...dunno, sorry. Thought it might be worth a try.
 
That system beep only happens to me when I'm using Pidgin on XP and backspace an empty IM window. Nothing else causes it for me.
 
Didn't look for a solution. Just don't backspace when there's nothing to backspace :p


It was on my mom's computer, which I'm only on once a week when I visit, so it's not a real big deal for me.
 
The same thing happens to me, and it's bloody annoying.

Has anyone found a fix for this yet?
