Motherboard screws, damaged thread...

Hey guys,

One of the screws on my motherboard is stuck, it will turn and turn, but no matter which way I turn it, it will always stay in the same place, as I think that the thread is broken. How do I get this screw out? The rest of the screw is fine. Also, the standoff mite be damaged. Please give me your advice.

You can try with lifting the mobo while turning the screw
pull gently on the side of the mobo to get some upward tension on that damaged screw
and unscrew it at the same time

if you get it out, check if the standoff isn't damaged
most likely only being made of brass it's gone as well
 
Hold the standoff screw with needle nose pliers. You should be able to turn the screw that way.

Agreed.

One thing however, if the standoff is spinning with the screw, and the standoff has not backed out from
the mobo tray, good chance the threads in the tray, and/or the threads on the standoff are stripped.
 
Thanks for the replies. THe only issue I have now is that some of the screws won't fit, and some seem misaligned. I have a Cooler Master Centurion 5, being on the cheaper end might not be as well built. So, it tends to grind a bit against my mobo, and the whole thing seems loose, and wobbles about when I apply a bit more force when pluging in cables.
 
Are you sure you're using the right screws?

My old case used the smaller screws, the kind you use to hold in hard drives.

Took me a while to figure out my Lanbox uses #6-32 1/4" hex screws instead of those smaller ones.
 
The Centurion 5 I used for my Daughters computer was very well built. And I have never heard of anyone complaining about screw alignment issues with it or it being wobbly.

If your using the M3 screws with standoffs designed for 6-32 screws then you will have this problem, it will seem to go in alright at first but then it will never tighten up, then when you go to remove it it just spins. Also because of the grounding tabs on the backplate adapter sometimes you have to apply a little pressure to get the board aligned properly then hold it there till you get a couple screws tightened down. This happens even on the best of cases. And if you don't use the proper screws you cant get it properly tightened down and it will seem wobbly.
 
I know I used the wrong screws, so I had to make do. It only came with seven correct standoffs. It doesn't really matter anyway, motherboards are tough and don't get filed down against screws (too easily), so I am not bothered if nothing is damaged. Thanks very much for your help guys.
