Gateway FPD2485W - 24" HD LCD

I doubt that, I've RMA'ed it more than twice. Maybe 4-6 times now. It was always 98$. I just stopped because no matter how many I got they all showed the same horrible inverse ghosting.

Well if you done it that many times, no wonder they want to charge you $500. I thought it was your second time.

Or, you know, they could of just changed it. It WAS sort of a risk on their part to only charge 98$.

Also, after that many trade ins I'd expect the opposite of charging more simply because I returned the "defective" one every time. So I doubt it's 500$ now because I've returned it so many times.

I have had one of these for four months now and I really like mine. Out of the box the thing is not so good. Had to adjust the brightness a ton, but once I got everything where I wanted it things were fine. VGA and DVI both look amazing, but things do not fare so well over all the other inputs. The Wii looks ok over component, but stick with VGA for your Xbox 360 and use a DVI - HDMI cable for your PS3. Like everyone else I have the funny PS3 issue with 720p. For some odd reason just the PS3 using DVI will stretch while displaying in 720p. It really is not too bad, but still a tad annoying. All other issues I have found can be solved by turning the display on and off. That must reset the image processing. As far as ghosting goes, there is some. But it is only during extreme motion and is usually not noticeable or when it is, mostly tolerable. Not a bad display, but I am sure there are better.

Is there any way to tell by the serial number what revision the monitor is. The BestBuy near me does not take off the colored stickers, but I seem to think they were either blue or yellow. I wrote down the serial numbers from the out side of the box so that I could see if I could figure out what revisions they have.

They have 2 that start with MXH72 and one that starts with MXH73. I would assume that the 73 is a later revision but I am not sure.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

So I called GateWay and finally got through to the advanced tech dept. or what ever they were, and I gave the guy the serial number and he told me that the panel MHX 73 was made in January 07. I have a theory on how to test this and I will report back as soon as I do.

So I tested my theory tonight to find out what serial numbers / colored tags are what manufacture months. I stopped by a newer, more high end BestBuy tonight and checked out the monitor. They had one on display that had the MHX 73 serial number, and it was manufactured in March, so it looks like the tech guy may have been lying. The color on the service tag that is supposed to be removed by BestBuy was blue. They had another one there and it had a green service tag and the number was MHX 75 so I am assuming that it was a April or May model. I have not heard of any confirmed May or June panels so I think it may be an April.

Today I bought MGL6B Gateway 24" but I saw this forum that MHX73. so I want to know which one is the better version? I assume latest version may be improved than past version. Right?

I checked back of monitor.. MFG date was Nov 2006.

Should I return it back and find new version like MHX73?

Just for the record boys, I thought I would post this up. The Gateway FPD2485w is my main display. I like it and never had buzzing or heat issues. The only real problem I had was the crushed blacks in low lit movies. My GPU was a nVidia 7600GT running under XP. I now have an 8600GT under Vista 32bit home premium. My crushed blacks improved allot I think. I give the video cards shader's credit, but I'm not sure if Vista has a hand in it too.

I think if you have a nVidia 7 series card, then switch to an 8 series card, your crushed blacks will imprive using this display...

Anybody else who has made the series swap, and has this display, I would love to hear what you think about this too. :)

I actually ordered one from Gateway.com because they had a 1 day special for 80$ off the already marked down price of 579. I figured what the hey and ordered it. Then I got a call a few days later saying that that was not actually the right deal, it was for 80 of the speaker thing, but you had to buy the speaker thing and then send in the mail in rebate. I called them right back and finally got my issue escalated so I can get my discount. They said give it a few days, call back, and we should have an answer. I called back yesterday, still no answer, guy tells me to call back Monday. I am now considering since I found the 10% off coupon to just head up to a local BestBuy and pick it up from them, 549 - 10% = ~ 495 plus taxes and the warranty, which I will definitely be getting, would make this about 614. Although I may also head over to Office Max and check out the Soyo. It is only 299, plus because it is 299.99 the 2 year extended warranty is only 50$. So for less than 400 I can pick up the Soyo. Decisions, decisions.

Has anyone kept the "defective" unit to see if they only charge $98? It's very tempting.

That reaks of mail-order fraud to me. Besides, I'm sure that eventually they would be charging you for the original monitor. They probably wouldn't do it right away, to allow time for wierd shipping hangups, but in the end, they will get the money they deserve.

You will be charged the full retail price of the display.

So I canceled my order with GateWay and picked up the Soyo from Office Max, and it is amazing in my opinion. Granted, I have not tried any games or anything on it, but so far it looks awesome to me, plus it is only 299 and you should be able to get the 2 year replacement warranty for 49.99. I think it is an awesome deal!!

WTF! I forgot to return and they charged me $500 when they told me it would be $98. What should I do? can I complain to CC company? I don't even know what number to call at gateway to reverse this charge

Forgot...uh uhhh, sure....what, you missed that second 24" display sitting there next to the new one?:p

If I may ask, in all seriousness, why are people still buying this monitor with so many better choices out there?

VGA, DVI, S-video, Component inputs, plus USB hub, HD ready, and besides, it's a pretty good monitor.

Yes, there are slightly better choices, but none in this price range that have ALL of those above attributes. And right now, even if there was, I can't just dump another 500 bucks. I am sticking to my plans of making this last until Christmas, then I get my 32".

Hehe, yeah, I got what I deserved, but the monitor is sitting there doing nothing. I still haven't called either gateway or my CC. I'll let u guys know what happens.

FYI, I bought this monitor last december. If I had the choice and read this forum before my purchase, i would not have purchased it.

Gateway sucks! I have sent in my desktop in for service already as well as the monitor. Never had a problem with any other computer and I have a lot of them.

Today Went to bestbuy again.. just checked around... Somehow I saw 24" Gateway and changed price! from $549 to $679. I bought MGL6B at 549 price last week and Now it is 679 bucks for MEY79. I want to exchange since under 14 days policy for.. Hurry pls reply... WHich one is better? What improve from old?

Yeah, you "forgot" to return the old display. Christ.

You're a tool. The $98 is a temporary hold on the card. Gateway goes out of their way to tell you that you'll be charged full MSRP (minus the $98 initially charged) if you don't return the monitor.

In your case, I hope they end up hosing your credit.

Well that isn't what I was told and charged. I forgot to send back my monitor and I was only charged $98

Should I exchange that? Or No Big Deal??

If you have major heat problems, buzzing, inverse ghosting, or anything wrong with your monitor, you might want to exchange it. HOWEVER, when I exchanged mine (not from Best Buy mind you), I got a monitor that was even worse than my first monitor with the most awful inverse ghosting.

Now I don't know which model is the most current or which one has less problems, but if you have zero problems why exchange it? You have to decide if the current monitor you have is ok for what you are doing.

I would suggest you check for inverse ghosting, buzzing, dead pixels, etc. Good luck. Of course someone with a better history of exchanging the 24-inch might be able to answer you with regard to the model numbers.

This morning when I turned on my Gateway FPD2485W, I saw a dark line across the upper left portion of the screen. It is like a shadow overlaying the screen. See the picture below:

dscn5297ck5.jpg

My monitor is connected to my PC via DVI, but the line appears on all inputs, not just DVI. Therefore, it can't be a driver issue with my computer's video card. It seems to be a problem with the monitor itself.

I tried unplugging the monitor for a few seconds and then powering it back up, but it did not go away. I also tried resetting it to factory default, but that did not help either.

If you pivot the screen, the line stays in the same spot on the monitor (on the corner by the "HD Display" logo).

I am not sure what caused this, but it is possible that there was a power outage last night. I am not sure of this though. That is just speculation.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Has anyone dealt with this?

I believe I bought the Best Buy warranty, so if I have to, I could see if they cover this. I would hope they do, because this seems to be exactly the type of thing that should be covered.

Just an update on my problem:

I left it unplugged overnight and this morning it still exhibited the problem. As I hope you can see from the picture, the shadowy line is perfectly diagonal and cuts across the upper corner of the screen. Its very strange!

As I said before, it appears on component inputs as well as the DVI.

The manual/webpage says that if you have such a ghosts or shadows, you are supposed to use the "Auto" setting on the monitor. However, this setting is greyed out and I cannot select it when in DVI or component mode.

This confounds me. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Anyone dealt with Best Buy warranty and have an educated guess as to whether this would be covered?

I believe that the "Auto" feature is only available through the VGA input, not the DVI input. That would be why it is disabled for you. You could try changing the input to VGA and running the "Auto" and see if that helps, but based on what I see in your picture, I don't think it'd help your problem. I've had my monitor since January and I've never seen it do anything like what you show in the pic you posted. If you're still within the 30-day BB return period then I'd just return it and exchange it for a new one if I were you. Otherwise, go ahead and call in that warranty - I'd guess that something like this would be covered by it.

Does anyone know how to set 480p anamorphic wide-screen (853x480)? I have Playstation 3 at 480p mode over HDMI, but it looks to be using 720x480 for both 4:3 and 16:9 progressive scan. I would need 640x480 for 4:3 and 853x480 for 16:9 (these are the correct aspect ratios).

Well, I could not find a solution to my problem so I ended up taking it in to Best Buy to use my warranty. When I bought the warranty, the salesman told me that they do not repair these types of LCD screens, so I would be able to just swap it out.

When I carried it all the way in, however, they told me that they send it off to the service center, and they are the ones who make the determination as to whether or not it is repairable. Since I'm moving in a month, I couldn't send it off just yet (it takes several weeks to clear the service center).

Darn it, another person burned by Best Buy salespeople misrepresenting the warranty.

I tried this monitor. My main focus is Photo editing so my main needs/wants, was to have a 23-24" monitor that has accurate colors. I wanted to keep the price under $750 at the most.

I know IPS monitors provide most accurate color (in general), but because of my price constraint, I figures an S-PVA would suffice. After all, my Sammy 213T has done alright. My prints match my monitor very well.

So I tried the Gateway. The specs were nice, S-PVA, 24", and I got a good deal at the local Best buy (under $500).

I calibrate my monitors with EyeOne Display, at 100cd/m2, D65, Gamma 2.2. The colors looked fairly accurate, but overall there was a dark cast. I think this was due to the heavy anti-glare coating. The anti glare caoting is so heavy, it most images appear grainy. this was the deal killer for me.

Although I don't play games, you could see the invers ghosting when you moved the mouse or moved screens around. The Gateway monitor had a bright red bad pixel.

Overall, the Gateway was ok, but not as good as my ol Sammy 213T (which I am keeping so I have a dual setup). I guess I expected the new monitor to be at least as good as the Sammy if not better.

I had called dell asking for info. I got so annoyed with the run around and lack of help. I couldn't imagine calling for support. That and Dell is out of the 24" monitors for a month.

After reading here, I decided to try the LG L246W. I like the image quality better than the Gateway. It was a little easier to calibrate, I like the end result better, and it doesn't have the heavy anti glare coating. Overall, this fits my needs well and I got this at a nice price too (under $500).

I would have preferred an IPs screen, but the cheapest 23-24" models run $900+. The LG seems like a good compromise though. Since I don't shoot Fashion/Portrait photgraphy, the color accuracy will suffice.

I can see why people could think that.

Anyways I have nothing to prove here. Believe me or not. It doesn't really matter. I know what happened.

It's a chump move to try and scam a company like that. People like you increase the cost of goods for honest customers.

As I said before. I didn't scam them out of anything. I had an issue, created a RMA. Sent them videos of the problem.

Then forgot to send it back. So I was out of $98 and had a monitor that I thought didn't work. I really expected them to charge me full price.

Come to find out, it was my crossfire cards that was causing the problems.
