I would like to know what type panel it is. It states Horizontal Viewing Angle 178° Vertical Viewing Angle 178°. Isn't that an IPS panel? This just seems too cheap for that. Anyone know?
 
Tftcentral claims its an IPS *26"WS LG.Philips S-IPS (LM260WU1), other websites claim it features a S-MVA panel from CMO. Nobody really knows for sure. I myself am interested in this monitor as well.

I looked seriously at this monitor awhile ago, ultimately in the
absence of any definitive answer and in seeing one at BestBuy, I avoided it. If you really want IPS technology I'd stick with a company that knows what they are selling. Same goes for PVA technology etc.
 
this has come up a few times. Acer UK claims it is "advanced PVA" on their website. However, on quizzing them, they told me it was a Samsung PVA panel. When I asked what part they referred me to their specific parts team who can supply replacement panels etc for their models. They confirmed it was actually using an LPL panel, so LG.Philips, and that would be their 26"WS S-IPS panel.

Also add to this that the specs Acer list matches the specs of the S-IPS panel. Also, Samsung don't make a 26" PVA panel at all. Also, a while back someone posted a pic where they'd taken the back of an AL2616W and revealed a label showing the LPL part number (wish i could still find it)

Pretty sure it's S-IPS in this one

I'm not disagreeing with you, it is a very valid question based on the spec's that Acer lists.
But, I don't understand the economics of it. How can Acer mass produce a monitor with the same LCD panel as a high end NEC(2690) and sell it at $900(?) less - and to boot, call it their 'Value Line". Was it the AL2623W or AL2616W that you saw the photo of? Is it possible that there was a limited release of the 'Acer Value Line of monitors when it was introduced and then the panel was switched for mass production?

It may be a PVA panel, but flatpanels.dk doesn't list this particular model "Wd".

Second, the viewing angle is obviously not TN like. Looks TN? In what way? The ACER has 800:1 contrast, the TN you list is probably closer to 1000:1 without hardware acceleration, not to mention it is completely different size.

The samsung doesn't match either.

You may be right, however they fail to list the correct model "Wd".

yeah i know what you mean. however, i'm just going by what the parts team at Acer told me really, which backs up everything else. It's an odd one. I think BH have just based their writing on what Acer have written on their site / press releases, and tbh, why not!? However, on delving a little deeper, i dont think it can be PVA....i'll see if i can find that image somewhere!
 
right, this was one of the other bits of evidence I'd seen before, managed to track down this handbook for the screen. Note it lists the panel as LPL LM260WU1 for the AL2623w

I've noticed this as well, pehaps this is the issue, are there different vesions?

Europe:
Value line: AL2616W (ET.L8208.001)
Office line: AL2623W (ET.L810C.002)

US & Canada
Value line: AL2616Wd : (ET.G16WP.001)
 
all have the same specs though don't they? i doubt Acer would use different panels....also still the problem there isn't a Samsung PVA in that sector. It's a very odd one, wish Acer had been more clear with it all :)
 
on page 2, number 24 lists the panel used and says: "LPLLM260WU1 SLB1" from what i can tell.
 
This is some pretty good LM260WU1 support.
I got a reply from Acer US tech support in reply to the following question:
I'm interesting in one of your 26" monitors, for photowork.
Would you be so kind as to provide me with the Company name of the Panel
Manufacturer, type of panel and the panel part/Model number for each of
these two Acer Monitors AL2616 and AL2623.

I did however find the AL2616W where they call it advanced IPS instead. Couldn't find it in the english pages, but it was in the norwegian ones :D:
Acer 2616W

Both the AL2616W and the AL2623W looks like the same type, but the AL2623W was described as advanced PVA.
 
If somebody would buy this monitor and confirm that it is IPS i swear I'd have my order right after them... :) For some reason, I can only use IPS displays because I tried VA and TN an they just aren't good enough for my linkings...

They should be widely available? I went and had a look at an AL2616W at my local BestBuy before I made my choice (online Planar PX2611) At the time, I was unimpressed with the Acer's build quality and I was frustrated with all the conflicting Acer info. In seeing the AL2616W beside a Samsung 275T (S-PVA) there was a white glow to the Acer and it's contrast was obviously not as deep of black as the 275T. So, in seeing one live in my opinion visually it's more like a PlanarPX2611or iMac than a Samsung panel.

And that is a good thing, my current IPS panel cannot produce as deep blacks as S-PVA panels but theres no input lag, and no inverse ghosting or anything like that. Also, there's no back light bleed. Playing games is very clear and theres no blurring. So maybe its just me but if a monitor ghosts a lot then I wouldn't appreciate it as much even if it has a better contrast ratio.

I had my eyes on teh PlanarPX2611 too, but I cant justify the price of $949, maybe if I hear any good impressions or reviews on a 26" monitor that features the S-MVA panel from CMO I might give that a try.

I hear you - but that means Acer US sent me incorrect product specifications when I request them.

If it's not IPS tell me what panel it is?

Further I have e-mailed behardware 3 times asking them which panel was in the Monitor they reviewed and have not had a reply.

Hmm....does anyone know where it's bieng sold locally. If I can see it in opperation I could tell easily.

Damn, apparently it's only available as a special order or on-line. They must be in limited supply.
 
I saw one at Best Buy, looked similar to my Planar PX2611 in operation (white glow). Particularly compared to the SM275T (S-PVA) beside it.
 
If it's still there, this is how to tell which tech it is...

1. Tillt it back, look at it from about 45+ degrees below. If it gets dark, it's TN.

2. Try to get a dark image on it, look straight at it in the middle of the sceen. Move your head paralell side to side, keeping your head at the same angle. If you see details in areas that were previously dark, and a dark patch moving with your head, it's VA based.

3. Look at the dark image from the side or top at about 45+ degrees, if you see an amber or purple haze and none of the previous effects, it's IPS.
 
I'm supposed to be receiving one of these today, will post results.

anyone know if acer has a service menu with panel info etc. ala the older dells?
 
Let us know if it will display 1920*1200 over DVI too, please. This was a problem with them apparently.
 
1920x1200 is fine and it appears to be a *VA based screen. Similar characteristics to my old monitor which is *VA based.

Initial impression: its a nice barebones, big monitor. I personally dont mind VA panels so screen type is fine with me. If you are looking for a nice large panel that is cheap this is a good buy.

So it suffers from black crush? Horizontal color shift.
