GA-P35-DQ6 or Asus Blitz Formula

I am now thinking about a GA-P35-DQ6 or Asus Blitz Formula. Both use high quality materials, this is important for me because I plan on using this PC for a few years without upgrade.

My original purchase was Asus P5K-Premium. It did not work out because of the IDE/AHCI/RAID problem with SATA drives (apparently this is a known unresolved issue).

I understand that GA-P35-DQ6 has 2 revision (1.0 and 1.1). How do I find the revision number, is it on the box?
 
Looking at my DQ6 box, the revision is given on a sticker on the box. I have no clue what's different between 1.0 and 1.1 but I know I've got a 1.0 and it's been working rock solid since day 1. I haven't tried overclocking but there's Crucial Ballistix 1GB sticks (4) and a Q6600 with a Thermalright Ultra120 Extreme.
 
I have a hard time to decide between the two. The Blitz is about $10 more than the P35-DQ6. From my research, they are both very good MB.

What would you buy if you were me?

(Q6600-G0, EVGA 8800GTS-320 MB, Cosair-620W, 2 GB OCZ, P182, etc)

DFI Lanparty P35, but thats me.
 
I have been doing research on the Blitz Formula.

Accordng to the review from bjorn3d (URL below), this MB has 2 external SATA ports but I do not see them in the external IO panel (page-7 of the same review).

Can someone please confirm? It wll be a surprise for me if it does not have external SATA ports since this is supposed to be a high-end MB.
 
The revision 1.1 of the P35-DQ6 has a redesigned cooling system on the board. 1.1 is a much lower profile and in my eyes an awesome fix. The one on 1.0 gets in the way of everything. Hard to install cpu coolers (especially air) and gets in the way of gpu blocks possibly. It did at least with my maze4 so I only watercooled my cpu. Great motherboard either way though. :) I just wish I could find out who is selling 1.1 because I still see Newegg and the rest with pictures of 1.0.

I'm in the same situation as you. Wait or get a cheap board to hold you off until X38, especially if you are willing to shell out the dough for a Blitz. It should be here in 2-4 weeks. I'm getting the DFI P35 T2RL and then selling it off once the X38 gets here.
 
Checked the Asus site. There is no ESATA in the external IO panel in Blitz Formula. Looks like bjorn3d made a mistake. The lack of ESATA is strange because the Blitz Extreme, P5K-Premium and P5K-Deluxe all have the 2 ESATA ports in the back.

I need these ESATA ports because I plan to buy an external hard drive for backup. USB is too slow as compared to ESATA.

Since currently there are SATA problems with P5K-Premium, I may have to consider P5K-Deluxe now.
 
Do you think they are referring to eSATA ports at one of the PCI slots? My Gigabyte P35-DQ6 has two eSATA ports but they are attached at a PCI slot in the back. My eSATA ports also have a 4 pin molex connector to supply voltage to the external device.
 
I thought of this too. I checked the accessories and I did not see any ESATA bracket for the back panel. If I have to buy another PCI card, it means that the MB does not come with ESATA port!

I noticed that in the GA-P35_DQ6, it does come with a bracket has of 2 ESATA ports and also a 4 pin molex connector for power. Why? All external HDD or external HDD enclosures already come with power supply.

Ozoneman: What do you think about your GA-P35-DQ6? Would you buy it again?

I really like my P35-DQ6. I spoke to Gigabyte and they said Newegg should have the newest revision 1.1 as well. The pictures don't reflect the new revision, but Newegg probably never noticed the change and just keep going on with sales as usual.

I've had my DQ6 for about 2 months now. It's been solid. I've OC'd Q6600-B3 to 3.2ghz w/ 4x1gig Ballistic Tracers PC8500, no problems. Currently running 3ghz and waiting for winter to arrive. :D

You can find pics here. I had another post that showed more detail on the TRUE mount but can't find it. Probably disappeared during one of the recent forum outages.
 
I did ask Gigabyte what the difference between the rev 1.0 and 1.1 versions were and the 1.1 has a smaller heatsink footprint. One in particular is the one that'd have to have a cover removed to get to the screw to remove the cooling plate on the backside and is also big enough to make installing some aftermarket heatsinks a challenge.

I'm still digging this rev 1.0 DQ6. Absolutely rock solid. I'd easily buy another.
 
well i have a P35 DQ6 and so far been happy..im a noob in OC'ng so sometimes i get to see BSOD and all it takes on the DQ6 is just a reboot...IMHO it has a very solid BIOS, Capacitors and damn look nice especially those heatpipes runnning around the mobo although i have the pink dimm slots :p it grew on me and what it can do on my e6550 before..so all in all Gigabyte P35-DQ6 is a great and solid board! buy it and you wont regret it..

Why do you have to remove the cooling plate?

I've used the 4 pin molex when I hooked up a hard drive from another PC to the eSata port on the back. I just wanted to hook it up for a few minutes to move some files over after removing from the other PC. By the way, the mobo comes with an adapter that will go from the 4 pin molex to a SATA power connector.

I would definitely buy another P35-DQ6. It is top of the line and it is sexy!!!

You might have to do this if you use some aftermarket heatsinks like the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme that have their own backplate rather than the stock pushpin mounting.

I'm interested in the P35-DQ6 also. Does anybody know if the revision 1.1 board still has the huge heatsink on the back of the board? If so it it will have to be removed in order to install any heatsink that requires a backing plate.

Qunestions on SATA/ESATA connections in the GA-P35_DQ6:

1. I know these ports (SATAII0, SATAII1, SATAII2, SATAII3,SATAII4, SATAII5) come from the Suth Bridge and these one (GSATAII0, GSATAII1) come from GIGABYTE SATA2 chip. What difference(s) does it make for the end-users?

2. Which ports should be used to connect the External SATA bracket?

You don't have to worry about the heatsink on the back if you install Scythe Ninja cooler. It is a great heatsink and will do what you need.

1. Not much really. The GSATA won't do Raid 10 I think.

2. Any of them.
 
I checked. GSATAII0, GSATAII1 can only do Raid-0 while the other South Birdge SATA connections are do Raid 5 or 10.

Since I do not plan on setting up Raid, I should be able to connect the ESTA bracket to any SATA ports, right? Are there any reasons, one way or another, in term of speed and resource?

I was thinking to connect the ESATA bracket to these 2 ports and leave the other ports for internal hard drives and optical drives. I plan to buy an external HDD for backup (maybe once a week) using this ESATA connection.

Thanks. Looks like the heat pipe setup really cools the MB.

The article mentioned that the new X38 MB will hit the market in late August/early September. Does anyone have more information on the launch date?
 
well x38 mobos should be popping up soon; however the blitz been officially out for about a month but good luck finding one for sale in us, I think it will be similar with the x38 mobo like asus maximus it might lunch in september but you prob won't be able to buy it till mid-end october. Now if you can wait the x38 looks to be a better performer, anandtech had a review of gigabyte engineering sample x38 mobo and even that one beat current p35 mobos by few %.

Somewhat of an apples and oranges comparsion with regards to the Blitz Formula being found for sale in the North America. I checked NCIX.com's website, they indicate that as of the 12th the Blitz Formula has been discontinued due to a board to be released soon using a chipset they can't discuss due to a NDA. If one assumes the NDA means the X38, that implies they are ditching the Blitz series for the Maximus IMO.

Because of an impending release of an upcoming board based on a chipset that we're under a NDA on, ASUS discontinued this board before shipping any quantity out into the channel. As soon as I have news that I can post with regards to the new board, I'll put up a message in this thread to point everyone in the right direction. Apologies for the inconvenience".

NCIX is a Canadian reseller as an aside, but would assume their situation would apply in the USA also.

Anyway, I've occasionally seen some Blitz Formulas for sale on ebay, albeit for some almost absurd prices. Blitz Extreme I have seen off and on with some online resellers, Newegg had it, but pulled the listing again as of today, I'm guessing just due to being out of stock, unless they just aren't getting any more stock, period.




Okay, I guess my point with all this rambling, since it probably isn't clear is that I think the situation with the Blitz series was somewhat unique..although yes there was a delay with the Extreme, and we have yet to see (and may never see) the Formula in North America, I suspect that was in part due to them making a small amount due to the X38 chipset and the Maximus coming out.
 
not sure if they going to discontinue the blitz formula or not but ClubIT had it in stock for few days so I managed to buy one, should be here next week.

I also read this on NCIX forum and I came to the same conclusion as you with the possible Maximus Formula release to replace the Blitz Formula. I think ClubIt availability is only the remaining stock and I bet that when it will be empty, it will call the end of the Blitz Formula.
 
Well crap... I just spent 260.00 on the formula, but now I'm debating if I should cancel the order and try to get a comparable X38.

Then again I really don't want to spend over 300.00 for a board...

Well, the question that remains for you (and me) is When will the X38 actually hit the shelves? The maximus nevertheless?

I really wanted a Blitz for that Fusion cooling system. Hope they put something like that on the Maximus final release..
 
The fusion cooling was a main point for me as well, and te fact that the 2 reviews I saw for it were outstanding...

I think I'll keep the order, the rig I'm building should last me 3-4 years at least.

Now that Blitz Formula is out of the question for you. What MB would you use for your new rig? Are you considering P35-DQ6 or IP35-Pro ?
 
I did order the Blitz Formula; it should be here sometime next week.

I was going to go with the P5K-Deluxe, but was also thinking about the P35-DQ6. I would recommend you're already so close, you might want to sit tight and see if the X38's actually release later this month.

i bought a DQ^=6 a week ago but a cant seem ti get any cpu coolers onto it, nit even the stock cooler. Once you ush in one pin of pushpin mechanism you cant get the oter two in because the cooler sits too high above the board. Has any one else had this issue?
