i haven't been able to sync my music to my iPhone, and it's driving me nuts. i've completely disabled DEP, but when i try to sync my playlist, the iPhone and iTunes will say that they're syncing, then it craps out with an error saying that it cannot copy to the disk because it could not be read from or written to.

after getting that error several times, it magically started started transferring files and managed to transfer maybe 80 megs of music before getting the same error.

i've tried reinstalling iTunes, i've tried using 2 different external drives (both NTFS), and i've tried using another computer (XP tablet edition), all with the same result.

any ideas?

I've had this error as well sometimes. I can't figure out what causes it except that i've also gotten prefetch errors that may be related.

But you say that you also can't sync in xp so maybe it's an iphone problem. It may be worth trying to do a restore to factory settings.

hopefully it will be fixed in the next itunes update.....
apple has a habit of leaving lots of bugs in the windows version of itunes...

i think i might have figured out a way around the problem, although i still don't know what causes it.

the way i've always managed my music was to create .m3u playlists in my main music player, then import those playlists into iTunes. then i would sync my iPods (3G regular and 2G nano) to those playlists. a bit of a pain, but it works.

this was the way i was originally doing it with my iPhone when i was getting the error messages. however, when i started a new library and playlist from scratch within iTunes, they synced without a hitch. this is going to be a pain in the ass starting over, but at least i can use the iPod part of my iPhone.

If the music is on an external drive, then I doubt it'll probably work. Try and get the music to another folder on the main hard drive where Vista is installed, and add the songs back to iTunes from there. Then sync. Maybe iPhone recognizes it's an external drive you're getting the music off of, so it needs something that will be there always, and can't be removed for some reason...

Nope, all my music is stored on an external hard drive and I just created a Playlist called IPhone and added everything I wanted on the phone and it synced no problem, so the issue is NOT with the external drive. I even had to plug my external drive into my laptop to sync my phone as I run Vista 64 on my main computer and found out that MS 64 bit OSes are not supported with the IPhone. ITunes works, but not the IPhone.
