So its official, FLying Labs has signed on with SOE to be the publisher and billing/customer support/host for Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Thougths and opinions?

Its a shame imo, I was really hoping for this game to be good. I think most likely what happened is the devs ran out of money; Ive been watching PotBS since 2001; 6+ years is a long time to be in dev without a major new project to raise cash (I know htey claim they made millions and millions from Rails Across America - but that cant support a company for 6+ years and pay for allt he costs assoicated with launching an MMO).

So they are basically selling out to SOE. I know the devs claim this isnt so, but I ahve yet to see any indie dev stay in charge once it gets signed on to SOE.

I will even predict how SOE will ruin the game: they will overpower the pirates faction and no one will bother with any of the other classes,.

Thoughts? Opinions> Love em, hate em, POTBS now = SOE.

It may not be too bad. Since SoE took over Vanguard SoH the game has only gotten better.

I don't know why SoE gets such a bad reputation..I've never ran into any scruffles with them.

I have literally been waiting 3 years for this game. After all the shit SoE put me through with Planetside and EQ, I don't know if I can stand to give them any more money.

However if I can use station pass, I might just do it since I own 2/3 of the station pass games.

Beta tested this game since last year and I can tell you the game is a let down :(

But I wish FLS the best, they're a great dev team and really listened to the beta testers. Hopefully SOE won't have a big influence with the game but time will tell.

how many "indie" devs has SOE bought?

Is it that bad? I never got into the beta, even though I was signed up for over 2 years.

Its okay, dont take my word for it as its my opinion but theres some facts that wont change.

Potbs is built on a playstation2 (Intrinsic Alchemy) engine, that would be fine 2-3 years ago (when they should of released the damn thing) The graphical flaws/errors/glitches are eye soring.

The physics are horrible for current gen even last gen (think ps2 here). Character customization and ship customization are no where near as close to current mmo's.

Gameplay wise is the only thing potbs has going for it, and even the gameplay is limited when you consider the current mmos out there today

They should of not delayed potbs for so long they should of released it at least a year ago :(

Noooooo I don't want to hear that, I want to hear how it's an engaging, fun and refreshing alternative to all the swords & sorcery mmos like I hoped it would be :( AoC has got "big disappointment" written all over it despite the slavering fans, and I'm not interested in Warhammer, so this year's going to be a big washout if Pirates isn't up to scratch, SOE or otherwise.

Im tellin ya, they are going to trash Pirates good.

Will be so easy; I see them unbalancing the factions (and we all know which one would get unbalanced given the title) and it will ultiamtely ruin the game.

SOE has a low opinion of user content, crafting, etc. Basically anything that isnt straight hack, slash, cha-ching. These things are critical to PotBS though.

I beta tested it off and on for the last year; I do agree with above psoters sentiments - the game should ahve been released a few years ago. It had mediocre graphics in this era though and could ahv ebeen upgraded sometime in the future.

Re: it being prime time news; well, I find this issue mroe interesting than 90% of what CNN reports. SO yeah, it should be on every TV in America lol.

Dunno how AOC will turn out; their recnet fund raising announcement included a blurb about making it mroe mainstream; has me worried now that theya re thinking WOW clone with $$$ signs. If so, that will be another waste; altho for the time being Id like to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Have you ever heard of SWG (Star Wars Galaxies)? 'nuff said:(

"It's as if millions of voices crying out were suddenly silenced." So much potential, it was such an awesome game, then it went to crap so fast, I don't even know what happened.

Simple...they dumbed it down for consoles.

The combat upgrade they did in April 2004? (not sure the date) was a good thing. Made the game rather more challenging, no more solo players with super buffs taking out entire nests of rancor single handed and with not much more than a scratch. Yeah, there was a lot of screaming over it because players couldn't do that anymore, but that pretty much quieted down once people learned the new system.

When they went and trashed the entire system though, eliminating what I thought was the biggest single draw for the game - being able to fully customize your character across ALL the different skills rather than being locked into a single class and limited choices - that's when I said "Screw You" to SoE and quit. Considering that whole NGE change occured just a week or two after the release of an expansion that added content for skillsets that got eliminated by the NGE, and afaik SoE refused to refund anyone for buying that expansion, I swore then I'd never touch another SoE related product.

So yeah, while PotBS might turn out to eventually be the greatest MMO ever, I think there will be a huge number of potential customers who won't touch it simply because SoE is involved now...I am one of them.
