Project: parallel HEX (completed!)

No, just put the tip of the insert into the hole then gently press it in with a low wattage soldering iron (about 25W)

Wow! I haven't looked in on this log in a while, although it appears the project has turned out very nicely! Congratulation!

Now I get it! (Sorry, language issues:)) You're right - it will make the acrylic soft then after fit it will cool down and melt this insert in it... It should be stable and steady right?

Beautiful in so many ways... I haven't been on hard forum in a while but i'm so glad to see this finished. Definitely one of my favorite projects. Congrats man

Thanks for the appreciation guys.

So parallel HEX is officially completed!

Here's some final images and videos for you.

The following series of images are of a strange effect I am getting in the Collector when the pumps are at their highest setting. I’m going to discuss this in more detail in the water cooling forum soon.

Here's what it's like after the pumps have been run 100% for 10 minutes!

Here's some videos:

Video 1 of 6 - Night time illumination, shows the bubbling effect in the Collector.
Video 2 of 6 - Day time lighting, starts with the Collector effect, then reducing it.
Video 3 of 6 - Day time lighting, close up of the Collector effect and a general pan.
Video 4 of 6 - Night time illumination, with the laser being activated.
Video 5 of 6 - Night time illumination, with the laser being activated (again but longer).
Video 6 of 6 - Day time lighting, with the collector effect very visible.

The parting shot, with parallel HEX in it's prime location:

Many thanks for being my audience!

Congratulations for completing one of the greatest mods in computer history :D

It's awesome and I hope you can upgrade the computer parts since this is definitely a keeper for a long time.

Absolutely gorgeous! I hope you get that weird bubbling effect in the collector figured out. Definitely very stunning to finally see all together. God, that must be so cool to show your friends and such :D

Wow nice job!! I forgot about this thread too  :)
... my list of people I hate on [H] is starting to grow and grow and grow :p

i'm wondering if it's possible to tweak the spouts inside the res so they all point in an either clockwise or counter clockwise position, so as they feed in it creates a whirl pool. i think all those intakes pouring into the same place causes a lot of turbulence. if they all worked together in maintaining a vortex, maybe the bubbles wont form.

or maybe raise the water level up, so that there's less distance for the water to fall, so the stream doesn't suck air down with it? know how you get turbulence from holding a hose above water, but once you submerge it, or hold the opening level to the water, no more bubbles? kinda like that.

It's been a long time coming and well worth the wait. Simply one of the best builds I've ever seen. Great job and congrats... I think I just had a geek-gasum!!!

;) Thanks again guys!

Xilikon - Yes, it can be upgraded although the waterblocks would probably have to be replaced. It will have to be a complete strip down to change the motherboard, but no more fabrication would be required. As for upgrading in the future, the hardware inside is already a bit dated but fine for the next few months atleast. Watch out for parallel HEX Reloaded!

Geo Fry - The wierd effect in the Collector is actually quite appealing! Since the bubbles never get to the bottom, they aren't actually sucked in to the circuits. This effect never happend when it was on the bench, it's only occurred since I changed the UV additive I used previously - which also changed the colour from blue (from the antifreeze) to clear.

nvidiapwnsati - :)

Everfalling - Tweaking the spouts as you say would require the top of the Collector to be changed, so the taps were angled. I think you could definitely get a vortex going by doing it!
As I mentioned earlier, the bubbling didn't happen before. I tried AC's BlueMotion UV additive this time - the only thing I changed - from generic UV additive. I'm 100% sure that's what caused it so extreme. You are right about the height of the water level. The greater the distance the water has to fall (and the force of it ie pump speed), the greater the turbulence. I noticed this when on the bench, but at that time the entire path of water became a mix of air and water when the pumps were at top speed.
I'm going to start a thread in the water cooling forum as I think there will be some interest in this there.

jmroberts70 - A geek-gasmum? That's a new one! ;)

Does anyone know how to edit the title of a thread? I've been wanting to put a 'Complete' for such a long time!

Ask a moderator to edit the title for ya :)

For the upgrade, I'm looking forward to this for sure with the next-gen technology (quadcore + 8800GTX) for some high level Geek-gasm ;)

iblock

Fantastic work, as everyone's said!
Congratulations on finishing the build, I've been watching this since last summer :)

What a great ending to the greatest case mod i have seen so far. Dont feel shy about future changes/additions.....you've got a great audience who'd love to see a comeback!

I've got absolutely nothing original to say. So, ditto to what everyone else has already said...

I've been watching this log for awhile too and I am quite impressed by the finished product

Mysterae I can honest to god say that if you put that case into mass production, I would buy one. I dont dare ask you to mass produce the collector because everyones computer needs alittle bit of individuality.

;) Thanks again guys!

I think you can update the title by editing your first post...but not sure..

After a certain amount of time, you can't retitle the thread yourself, but you can ask a mod to change it for you.

...There are (clear) acrylic blocks fitted at all corners with these brass expansion threaded inserts, erm, inserted in to them. ...

thread_insert_01.jpg

The one on the left is the flush type, the other type flange. I've chosen flush type, M5 threads as I'll have M5 screws holding it all together....

I have huge problem with these inserts - I cannot find them!! :-(
Tried in B&Q, other DIY shops but still nothing. Do you know any e-shop that I could order them?
WHere did you buy them?

Would you really? Strangely enough, a few people have asked about it too, but nothing solid. I've been designing a non-water cooled version of the case - not as tall and a lot less crowded, you can actually see the motherboard!

As for making the Collector for folk, I would if I could do more than break even costs wise. I've also redesigned that so it's smaller, only 1 port-in instead of 6, a square or round top and base for easier mounting and of course cheaper. But alas both the case and the Collector are still too expensive for most folk.

Dude you get you a 30" wide screen ultra sharp and take a big pic and I will take the centerfolds off the wall and put that pic up. I mean it, that is is the sexiest build I have seen on any site. You need to submit that to CPU mag and win a grand for new toys from the egg!

I couldnt read all the posts.... but how many hours are into this??? Im shocked and awwed!

What would be awesome is if you get more of that acrylic and build a custom housing for a large LCD monitor to match Hex, you could also do it for the keyboard. With your engineering skills, I dont believe it would be a problem for you.... that IMO would complete the project!

I would seriously consider ordering one... seriously.

Awesome work, very impressive. I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said..

But honestly, if you ever decide to make a few more.. let me know.. your skills are worth a lot more than the material..... I would gladly help you do more than break even..

im curious.....how does the case do with dust? I would think you would have to clean a plexi case a lot in order to maintain a good look.

The system is running pretty well thanks. l'm itching to make something else, but l'd have to sell Parallel Hex to afford it :( and l've got no idea what I would get for it.

As for dust, it's not bad if l cover it when I'm not using it. lt does suck in bugs when it's on!

You could put it on eBay and post a link on whatever forums you frequent. That would give you a good idea of how much you'd get for it.
