What exposure mode do you usually photograph in/prefer?

Well, after being on vacation and after my latest photo taking trips, I find that I really like shooting with Aperture Priority mode. I used to shoot pretty much full manual mode only, but since I'm usually with other people whenever I'm taking pictures, I can't take the slow and methodical approach as much, especially if I only have a few minutes somewhere.

Since I like control over my depth of field, I use A/Av over S/Tv unless the situation calls for shutter priority.

So, just curious, what mode do you usually shoot in?

My Pentax K10D has a TAv mode. It allows you to set your preferred aperture and shutter speed and the camera automatically selects the ISO for you (you can even set the range of ISOs that the camera is allowed to select from). I've totally fallen in love with this feature as it give me a much greater latitude in my exposure selection. Before I got the K10D, I was always an Av mode shooter.

Pretty much manual for me most of the time. But I also shoot in Apature that is gnerally on partly cloudy days, when I dont feel like restting constantly.

I'm almost always in Aperture Priority mode. I will occasionally use Manual but not as often

Aperture priority for me also. I haven't much experience with DSLRs yet, but AP seemed to be the place to start for portraits - doing depth of field experiments and such. I should move on to the other modes to see what effect they have. But I have a big trip planned. I will be doing a lot of experimentation very shortly

I had been meaning to ask you about your Summer 2007 pics (which are now gone because of the db restore). I saw all your macro shots were handheld and manual focus - did you use a monopod? Otherwise, you can really keep your hands steady with that D2X and a 200 mm lens shooting at slow shutter speeds.

actually, Hyper-Manual different from TAv mode.

The K10D has a special button (called a "Green button") that you can use when in Manual mode that instantly sets the correct exposure for the scene, you can then re-adjust Aperture/Shutter speed manually from there. It's like an instant shortcut to auto-exposure mode when in M mode. It can save you many precious seconds when you need to quickly change the camera settings to the correct exposure range while in M mode. Say the current scene requires 1/30 @ f4, but your current manual settings are way off at 1/2000 @ f16, instead of madly fiddling the dials to get into range, I simply hit the "green button" to get there right away, then override aperture/shutter speed to my liking.

Nikon calls it "AutoISO", I'm sure Canon has a comparable feature. You can also use iTTL to get similar results (limited range, of course)

I'll put the thread back once the DB stabilizes (I have it as a text document). Yes, all shots are MF and most of them handheld - no monopod. The flash of course does the work to freeze motion for handholding. Believe it or not though, I also workout daily to build strength to focus that camera.

If i want a GOOD picture, there's no doubt that manual is best. Other than that I use auto, it works extremely well on my Samsung D400 which was very suprising. A lot better than my Canon S1 IS auto mode which kind of makes me sick
