So i buy an ultra 120 today because i got an e6400 that i plan on OCing, and the thing fits on the top, but on the bottom theres a tiny little chip or something thats maybe 1mm tall and its in the perfect place to completely fuck over the backplate for holding the ultra 120 up.

Is there any fix for this, dont really want to return this.

I've noticed that a lot of the 680i boards have things around the socket on the backside of the board that would keep a backplate from working. It's been one of the things turning me off from buying one.

Unless you can chop out a section of the backplate to make room for it, I doubt there is anything you'll be able to do to make it fit.

For EVGA at least, they fixed the 680i back problem awhile ago, I think in February or March (the post about this at the EVGA forums is gone). I purchased one in May at Newegg (122-CK-NF68-A1) and area behind the CPU is completely clear. I had no problems installing a Zalman 9700NT.

680i or 680i AND 680i LT? they seem to be very different boards

Im going to totally mod the shit out of the backplate, put more foam, make a little notch in the corner of the foam, and then hope the little chip doesnt get the shit smashed out of it.

i dont know how similar or different the backplates of a ss nt06 and tt big typhoon are compared to a ultra 120, but ive used both on my 680i LT, the evga model, and both have worked fine without any problems, just some mild warping.

The full 680i I know for sure. I would guess all of them are good now as it wouldn't make much sense just to fix this problem on one type of board. I don't think the foam will do anything at all since there's going to be a high amount of pressure. I would personally try to cut/drill out a hole. I've seen people use plastic washers to raise it, but that defeats the purpose of the backplate.

heres a pic of what i think is going to possibly break off, its RIGHT under the corner of the little foam square pad, and has a lot of pressure being applied to it it seems

its about 1mm in height

I've got a 680i Lt as well as a 650i board and they both have the chip in that same location. I'm using a Scythe back plate and it has 1/8 heavy foam backing that seems to cushion the chip just fine. I haven't had any issues with the chip at all and I have a water block clamped down hard, so that's much more pressure than a standard HSF will make.

alright it seems like everyone put the backplate on and is having no problems, so screw worry, im putting this sucker on! :D

Another option, if you're concerned about it would be to find 4 plastic washers to use on the screws, between the backplate and motherboard... just thick enough to give you that clearance.

I have a 680i A1 board with the 120 extreme and it fit with no problems. I was worried about it fitting before i got it, but i went through the forums and found out the cooler has only problems with some of the older 680 revisions. Plus the extreme i think was redesigned but don't quote me on that...:p
