NEC LCD2470WNX

Dell is coming out with the 2407 HC next month and there is no doubt the wide gamut will obliterate the Nec.

Does anyone even know when exactly the HC version of the 2407WFP is coming out and at what price point? I know the documentation is on their site, but I can't find a release date anywhere. I chatted with their customer service and, of course, they didn't know anything. Just said to keep checking the website every now and then. Maybe they are trying to get rid of a lot more of the regular model before introducing the HC.

Anyway, its tough to compare something that does exist to something that does not (yet).

I finally got access to this forum!

I have spend a lot of time reading various threads regarding displays. I am not a gamer with the exception of some light FS time. I do light work in CAD (electronic circuit boards) and Photoshop...I am not a photo pro either, but I take it a bit serious...I purchased last week a 2470WNX (thanks Manny and travbomb) that I have been using for a few days now. I needed more real estate! Nice looking unit...absolutely no dead pixels! It is in full native form and was a little on the bright side to my eyes out of the box.

After color calibration (with brightness set at 65% and contrast at 90%) using a eye-one display2 and Greta latest software, colors came alive!! While I realize this unit does not have a wider gamut (Adobe RGB 92-93%) than other units, I got more natural colors to my eyes than my previous monitor...a LaCie Photon Vision 19" LCD, which was the entry model LCD a few years back. I used white balance of 6500 kelvin and a gamma of 2.2. By the way, does anyone knows what brand panel was used in the older Photon Vision LCD? I think it was based on a LG if not mistaken...

My concern is while this unit for the price is great (displaying very neutral colors after calibration) ...how much better would the LCD2690 be? You know...I can always send it back and get the 2690. :D

I have learn a lot in this forum...Thanks.
Alex

Hi All,

I'm considering this Monitor as it seems like it's got the goods. Quick question, does the lack of PIP function in anyway take anything away from this monitor? Also, is the PIP function a gimmick?

Thanks you in advance for all replies.

Manny Calavera,

Hi, I just returned my 2-week old Dell 2407 and bought a NEC 2690 instead. I wasn't pleased with the contrast change and lack of detail in the dark areas when looked at straight-on. The problems I had are supposed to be intrinsic to VA technologies. I would like to know if you see this too in this NEC, which has the same panel as the Dell. I explain myself to a better extent here:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1004&message=23058338

You can follow my other posts in that thread for my gripes with the Dell, but the main problems I had are on that post. It is not good for photography, and so I was just annoyed and had one of those oh-what-the-hell-it's-my-birthday moments, and spent more than double for the NEC, which is absolutely marvelous. And the greater gamut shows. The greens are excellent. I still am waiting for my Eye-One display 2 I ordered, though, my Spyder2 seems to have some trouble calibrating this LCD, and the Dell too. I only wish the NEC had component inputs, though. But nothing's perfect. I will probably be buying the NEC 20WMGX2 later on though, as a second monitor, when my bank account heals its wounds a little. It is also an S-IPS.

As of this morning, I had the same tough choices- Dell 2407 for $570 or the NEC 2470 for $750 at PCconnection. I decided to go with the A-Grade panel instead although it is almosst $200 more since I do a lot of photo editing. Cannot wait to get it next week.

**edit, I got the 2470WNX-BK instead of the WNX (WNX was about $40 more)....Is there any real any performance difference between the two models?

Tri, both models are the same...the only diference is that the -BK has a black color case and frame.

travbomb,

Is the almost double the price of the 2690WUXi worth it over the 2470WNX? Also, what is the Adobe RGB coverage on the 2470? I know it has a sRGB mode.

i'm sure a lot of people purchase this model on the presumption of getting an A panel, but is this true or documented?

Thats why it costs more. Better panel, better components, better plastics, NEC built ASIC's. I am sure other companies like Samsung use A grade panels too.

No question here...this monitor is build like a tank showing quality all over it! Absolute no complaints and zero dead pixels in my case...

Travbomb,

As explained earlier, I am using this monitor mainly for photoshop work, lite CAD and the normal web surfing. It calibrated very nice, but I think I would like to see a wider color gamut...the 2690WUXi concerns me a bit by all the fuzz (good and bad) going around in different forums....you know, is a lot more money! Does the 2490WUXi has a wider color gamut than this one? ...I believe uses a different panel than the 2X70WNX series.

Thanks.

The 2470WNX sounds like a terrific monitor based on the few new users making comments. However, I haven't seen anyone speak to whether it works well with fast FPS games. Anyone have knowledge of that? Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi All,

I just got this Monitor & it's perfect for FPS Games. I've have seen absolutely no Ghosting on this monitor.

I just received this monitor...Holy COW!! Awesome, simply gorgeous. No dead pixels. And puts my 20" Samsung to shame. I was feeling bad because I had thought that I should have picked up a 30" instead but now I am very glad that I did not. Twenty Four is more than enough and I may stack another cheaper Dell 24 beside it when I need to. I was checking consistency up and down, left and right and absolutely no bleeding. Uniform all around. Well worth the extra $150 over other 24s.

My only gripe is that it has only 1 DVI slot?? So If I need to hook the Xbox 360 Elite (HDMI-DVI), I would need to rewire back and fourth- is this correct?

By the Way, what brightness did you guys set your up at? I have it at 84, anything brighter and I would go blind.

I am trying to hook up my 360 to this monitor but cannot, Does anybody know how I can do this??

There are no component inputs on this monitor. I will need an HDMI to DVI-D cable? (Can I use a dual 24pin DVI-D head for this or just a single 19pin?)

and as mentioned before- this will mean that I will need to unhook and attach(reattach) everytime I want to play my 360/Use PC?

Or is there such a thing as Two DVI heads combined with HDMI?

And what about the Sound??????

Anybody have their NEC 2470 hooked up to a 360?

Does anyone know if this monitor supports 1:1 pixel mapping so I can play my games on 1280x1024 in a square box instead of 1920x1200 ?

It does support 1:1. Manny explained it on page 2 of this thread.

My bud just picked up this monitor, from what I can see it's a kickass desktop display but definately not made for using as a tv (hence the lack of inputs) Since NEC calls this a business display I'm guessing it wasn't a high priority. I have no idea how you use that display at 84 brightness! When my friend unpacked and showed it to me the first thing I did was dial it down to the 50s. From my quick inspection I didn't see any the lag associated with previous Samsung S-PVAs (I could be wrong though) no backlight leak and great picture uniformity. Default colors looked spot on and I'd grab this is if I had the $$$.

I'll probably have to dial it down a bit more....:D great machine.

The color gamut is the same on both 24's at 72%. Main difference is obviously the S-IPS panel on the 2490 and its color controls.

does the 2490 have the lag issues like the 2690, Iam assuming it does as it uses exactly identical electronics.

identical electronics? It's not even the same size of panel.... But from a review and comments here.. no there's no noticeable input lag

yes different panel, Iam talking about the rest like the NEC ASICS, LUT's etc... all that stuff increases the lag hence the poor performance of the 26".

Actually i believe it is the frame buffer that causes the lag which is used to enhance the colors in various ways and many displays use frame buffers.

is it me or is there a "twinkling" effect when watching DivX movies? thanks.

mine came yesterday but had a row of dead pixels on the right and one on an island on the left. *sigh* first time i bought a monitor online too....

Yikes! I assume you will call NEC about this. Can you ask them what their dead pixel policy is?

I really want the NEC, but Costco has the Dell 2407 for $610 plus shipping, and you can simply take it to any Costco warehouse for return for any reason at any time (not just for 30 days). This makes the Dell very enticing since I can always take it back even if it has 1 just dead/stuck pixel a year from now. Decisions, decisions...

Thanks!

Yes, the input lag is caused by the frame buffer inside the monitor and depends on the monitor manufacturer, not the specific LCD panel. The monitor buffers a certain number of frames and uses that time to optimize the colors, contrast, etc of the images before displaying them. This introduces a delay between when the graphics card outputs a frame and when it is actually displayed on the monitor.

A description if frame buffering and input lag is given here.

My impression is that the higher-end brands of monitors tend to use frame buffering more aggressively (increasing input lag) since they do more optimization of the image (which is, of course, what is supposed to make the quality of the image better on their monitor than one from another "no-name" manufacturer that uses the same LCD panel). Although it sounds like this NEC strikes a good balance between image quality and minimal lag.

Mofongo.

Mofongo,
I think you will find that Costco has somewhat modified it's policy on electronic returns. You now have 90 days to make a return, which is still very good.

A dell panel doesnt even come close to comparing to an NEC panel, especially the 2407. the only thing the dell has better in this situation is being able to take it back locally. cant fault anyone for wanting to buy locally and have that option, but the NEC is so much better, for me it wouldnt be an option.
get the NEC, you wont regret it.

I agree. the NEC is displays very sharp text. i was suprised.. photos look great. i still have to test games and movies thoroughly. i got an RMA for it.. so, i'll ship it back monday (35 bucks for shipping!! damn hidden costs.......) *sigh*

there are times i wonder if i should have saved the 200 bux and gotten a dell.. =T

yeah, i like retail. you can buy it and exchange it right away if something is wrong with it or it sucks. at least dell sends you the new one before sending the other back! with newegg i gotta wait. i hope it'll be worth it :(

i got a question or two: can a monitor be so sharp that divx movies real bad? i can see blocks, ever changing shades and bad color everywhere... lol

i had the LG 246W and never noticed any of this bad. and it's almost not noticible on my NEC LCD1970GX that has the OptiClear coating. hmmmm..... how much would a 24" with that kinda of coating cost?

Keep in mind that your LCD2470WNX has nearly a million more pixels than your LCD1970GX and way way way more than a DVD can deliver. If you watch at fullscreen, you are going to see all the flaws of the DVD resolution, the MPEG-2 compression, and DIVX recompression.

yes but not more than the LG 246W...

NEC have recently announched the release of their new 24" LCD display, the 2470WNX. Part of the NEC 70 series, the screen utilises a Samsung S-PVA panel and offers 6ms G2G response time, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 500 cd/m2 brightness and 176 / 176 viewing angles. The screen is Vista and HDCP certified and also offers an impressive array of ergonomic adjustments, including height, tilt and rotation functions. The 2470WNX is available in silver and black models and is expected to be available from April 2007. "And probably going to cost $1,000,000."

LOL

ehmm, after having decided between BenQ FP241W and LG L245WP, I noticed how this one's price went down and arrived inside my acceptable range...

I have a really good opinion about NEC, but should I choose this display over LG L245WP? I know this one doesn't have HDMI, but any other things I should consider? There are still not many reviews of this...

Or in other words, why should I choose this over the LG 245WP (246WP) ? Only because of the superior quality this one has?

Thanks!

Don't base your decision on HDMI since it's easy to find a DVI-HDMI cable. I had the FP241W(firmware fixed). It was a perfect monitor, except for one bug, the monitor times to times had a black-out (on-off-on) within a second. It's related to the video card/drivers.
Happens most of the time on old ATI card. But I RMA it since there was no fix I or [H] could find and no way to know if it would always do it on future card. The LG as the same panel. Excellent display and LG as always impressed me with there product. But the "black-out" is also a problem on some LG 245-246 (it's a panel related problem...). So that's the reason I won't buy either of them... Sadly because 750$ canadian is a great price :(...

thanks for your reply MrPatate.

so HDMI is not that important, any other things to consider when choosing between NEC LCD2470WNX and LG L245(6)WP?

From the Costco website:

"Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell with a full refund. Exceptions: Televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPOD / MP3 players and cellular phones must be returned within 90 days of purchase for a refund."

Monitors can still be returned at any time. In fact, if you go over to the Sceptre forums, you'll see a lot of people who do just this. ;)

2 years ago, you used to be able to also return TVs within any time period, but they have tightened up on those.

I had the exact same decisions. I wanted to get the LG 245 ($600) since it was some $150 cheaper than the NEC, and it also comes with HDMI. I bet that if you can get a good copy of the LG 245 then you've got yourself a good deal with no regrets.

I was just worried of sending it back and fourth and then have my price mount to what I could have gotten the NEC for. Best Buy, CCity has the LG for $700 so that was not much of a savings over the NEC.

Mofongo,
I stand corrected. I thought I saw those fancy new stickers on the computer monitors in the store, but I must be thinking about something else.

On another note, I currently own a lg L246W and have no issues with it blanking out or not waking up. I am running it from a nVidia 7800GS OC. So far am very happy.
