Fry's OCZ 2GB DDR2 PC2-8500 1066MHz Memory $140 AR

I just bought these yesterday for $205 with a $50 MIR, so $155. Those are DDR2 1000, these are DDR2 1066. Think it's worth canceling that order and getting these and save the $10 for higher speed memory?

just keep those, they are D9's as well :)

Yeah, but for $10 less and a higher speed (not to mention the much smaller rebate), I'm tempted. My order for the Ballistix hasn't shipped yet. What's the word on the Crucial vs OCZ quality and customer service?

Probably about the same but I'd take OCZ memory over Crucial memory usually. I've had some good experiences with OCZ tech support and RMA. These are higher binned modules as well. I ordered a kit even though I already have 4 gigs of Buffalo FireStix PC2-6400 that I haven't even opened yet. I don't know what I'm going to do with all this memory.

If these are definitely higher binned modules, I think I'll cancel my other order. $155 was a great price, but who doesn't want to save $15? I can't use them without a mobo anyway. :p

cancel it now! you wouldnt regret this ocz memory, i have mine at 850mhz with 4-3-3-4-1t timings and can hit 900mhz with 4-4-4-4-1t so the ocz is definitely good memory in my opinion, and also is rated up to 2.4v, ballistix says 2.2 so i dunno where that will get ya ;)

What is the maximum effective overclocked speed you've been able to achieve with these sticks? A lot of the PC2-6400 with Micron D9 IC are capable of 900Mhz 4-4-4. How high can you go on 5-5-5?

Stupid question, but can you use SLI specific memory in just a plain jane 965 motherboard.

Keep the Ballistix, they are a much better brand, trust me.

Based on what? I've seen a lot more Ballistix modules failing recently than I have OCZ. OCZ will also do advanced replacement of memory modules. I don't know if Crucial will or not.

They do as well and they have a far better RMA process than OCZ. All my comments are based on my personal experience.

Well, I decided to save the $15 and go with the OCZ. It's a higher frequency, smaller rebate, and cheaper. No problems canceling the order with newegg.

Am I the only one that remembers the shady OCZ business practices of past?

Since then, I've always stayed away from them. I've always had good luck with Crucial memory products and tech support.

Explain how the RMA process with Crucial is far better. They send you the new memory. You send the old memory back. There isn't much to it. The last time I ended up RMA'ing memory with OCZ they upgraded me to a newer more expensive revision of the memory that had just been released since they thought it might address the problem I was having.

Oh, I definitely remember. Back in 2002-2003ish. They used to be HORRIBLE. But they've come a long way. They're top notch now.

Good for you! I'm pointing out another option. In the end people are going to buy whatever they want and to tell you truth I don't even care. FYI: The PC2-8000 come to around $131 with Rebate.

I bought a pair, couldn't resist the price. hell, I paid 180 w/MiR for the Platinum 800mhz OCZ back in December so I can't say NO to 140 bucks for the 1066mhz (SLI ready to boot!)

I got to ask the PC gurus a question though... do you guys think that the prices will continue to drop even lower than this? I'm thinking on getting 2 more sticks since all other Online Stores have them at 200+. Even though using 4GB would be a bit overkill, if price won't drop any lower than this, I don't mind splurging for it.

WTF does that even mean?

doesnt really mean much... maybe that its been tested to work with all the sli boards? i think evga 680i had some compatibility issues with some memory sticks, so its good to make sure the memory and motherboard do work well together.

Its a very different company now,and actually they really stand behind thier products.

Just got mine today, gonna send in the rebate tomorrow. Don't have a mobo yet though, so I can't attest to the OCing capabilities yet. Box looks nice though. :p

Google it. It has to do with an extra performance boost when running SLI on an nVidia chipset board with this memory.
It's EPP profiles for the RAM and completely unrelated to the video card SLI we all know and crave...I'm just trying to be a smartass and poke fun @ the "SLI = SELL! SELL! SELL!" crap we're being subjected to.

EDIT: My bad, it means "SLI-Ready XTC Heatspreader". :D Still, it was quite funny watching my bud throw this in a rig w/ an intel chipset and an ATI card. :p

Yes, the memory has enhanced performance profile that only work on SLI enabled motherboards. It requires a chipset that supports SLI. I guess you don't have to actually be running video cards in SLI in order to take advantage of the performance boost.

The new OCZ PC2-8500 SLI-Ready Series is equipped with NVIDIA Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP) to optimize the modules’ performance on nForce® SLI-based motherboards. OCZ exclusively engineered select high-performance modules with advanced SPD (Serial Presence Detect) settings to allow compatible motherboards to recognize and utilize the added information, ultimately increasing the performance potential of the entire platform.

OCZ SLI-Ready memory modules are programmed to boot at 1066MHz DDR2 with supremely fast timings of 5-5-5. Only motherboards equipped with the custom-designed BIOS, such as those designed for NVIDIA nForce SLI MCPs, can detect the optimized SPD profiles and ensure the memory functions under the best possible conditions. The exclusive OCZ SPD specifications take out the guesswork and provide enthusiasts and gamers with significant overclocked performance with no manual adjustment or compatibility issues.

Each OCZ SLI-Ready module comes equipped with an exclusive NVIDIA XTC heatspreaders for the most efficient heat dissipation and a look that stands out like its performance. Additionally, all SLI-Ready memory is backed with toll-free technical support, the exclusive EVP (Extended Voltage Protection) coverage, and an industry leading Lifetime Warranty.

With the fusion of the sophisticated EPP memory specification and cutting-edge, high-speed OCZ DDR2 architecture, the PC2-8500 edition is the ultimate breakthrough for advanced SLI platform performance.

Marketing BS aside...$140 for RAM that's speced @ 500FSB+...that's
