I got my e6420 yesterday and I wanted to know if anyone else have gotten theirs yet?
I won't OC it until I test the stock setting for stability and run memtest for a while so no numbers to report on that front yet.
4MB of L2 for the price of 2MB is very nice :)

Got it and running smoothly.

All the way up to 3.5 seems fine on stock voltage. After that you have to start pouring it on.

Mine is an L647G.

I got one a few days ago, no regrets. I fold on it 24/7 in the Linux SMP except for the X2 4200+ (WinSMP) and without tryin' it was at 3.0 GHz stable running and the coolest cpu of my bunch ;) I have a E6600 (2.9 GHz), a E6400 (3.0 GHz), a E6420 (as mentioned above), a E6300 (Conroe, B2, only 2.0 GHz) and a X2 4200+ (2.4 GHz) all folding 24/7 for the cause.

You guys buy it for around $215 right? You think there will be a slow incremental decrease after april 22nd to the supposed $183 price tag? If i have a system built and just waiting for the processor, should I just buy it now?

Hard to say, id say it would probably be a quick drop to that price. Buying a cpu right now is not the smart thing to do. Wait 6 days. :)

I'm so ready to get my build on with a 6420.

It's

not

even

funny.

I've spent just over 1200 bucks on everything from chin to nuts, and I'm just waiting on the processor..kinda hard to sanely justify waiting for only 30 bucks when it's the very last piece you need.

I bought it knowing it would drop. I needed a system ASAP because I can loose up to $200 a day without my system. I but the $40 bullet and bought early.

I paid $208 USD from BLT, the next cpu I buy (either a quad or another E6420 will come after April 22nd price cuts) I was kind of in a hurry and decided to get the E6420 a couple of days ago. It'll probably be cheaper after the April 22nd cuts, but so far all I've seen are the wholesale prices of a 1k cpu's at a time for retailers.

One thing worth mentioning. Athough BLT was able to ship my CPU the following day, it still took them 6 days to get it here and their shipping isn't cheap. That means that you may be better off waiting until you can get free 2 day shipping from some other etailer on the 22nd.

I know how that is. I'm glad I got mine yesterday. I finally finished installing both XP and Mandriva on my new computer. Running like a champ so far. Not sure how much is due to the E6420 though since everything is new.

Man I knew I should have pulled the trigger at shopblt a week ago. But launch is so close now. If only we knew they'd overclock decently, after seeing the batches of poor clockers recently.

I ordered one from BLT it should be here tomorrow. I was afraid on waiting for the price drops because of the crappy OC people have been getting from the newer batches of the 6300, 6400, 6600. I saw some other people getting some decent overclock with the 6420 and 6320 so I didnt want to wait and risk it for $20-30 in savings.

My 6420 from shopblt is running smoothly at 3.5 right now. Next stop, 3.6.

I noticed you're in early on the DFI 965-S. Haven't got it yet?

What volts you running?

no    somehow my signature and information attachment didn't make it to dfi, and there was a massive amount of miscommunication that I just got sorted out the other day. So after expecting it for over a week, I ended up buying it from the second wave of ewiz availability. Grr. at least I'll have it next week. At least I've found that I'm able to hit 3.6ghz no problem with my e6400, although motherboard is flaky, so that'll get resolved with dfi. But I'm all the more tempted to get e6420 now!!

Hmm.. I got my E6420 from BLT in about 3 days, I don't think it's so much their shipping department (BLT's) as it's the crappy shipping company that's shipping your cpu. :( You can't blame the taxi driver if the car breaks down  (Anyway that's my $0.02 cents worth of opinion :p)
Edit: I wonder if there's any truth to the idea with a batch change on the E6420's that it might produce some bad OC'ers  (as far as I've read it did for the E6600's, the E6400's and the E6300's  )

I've said in another e6420 thread and I'll say it again. These are all conroe chips. They were more or less all made together, and then binned into what they are now. So it's really silly to be comparing e6420 to e6600. They aren't intentionally "batch changing" to produce less superior products. Or well, I mean they could have if they've found a way to achieve what's needed to meet spec, and save a lot of money, of course.

But the point being is that it'd only be reasonable to expect e6420 to overclock better than e6600 for the following reason. E6420 are all pretty recent batches, and intel has shown improvement again in recent batches. E6600 that you can get from retailers currently are still from older batches, and will take some time to get up to speed, and as of such, may not be as good as e6420. That's all that can be said.

Gah. That's too bad. Sorry to hear that.

Well if it's any consolation there are some of us *cough* that have the board with no processor to use it with. A whole nother factor of lame. :D

For that matter, no cooling either...I can't decide wether to drop coin on a simple 120 loop now or see how far a $55 air cooler will take on this new build...I'm not looking for gawdy OC numbers (for now), I'd be happy with 3.2 - 3.4 (....for now..hehe) , which seems very feasible on the 965 and the new 6420's..

Well finally just got my system running properly and started to see what this chip can do. 3500 mhz is that max before I have to really get a nice bump in voltage.

Im currently running it 3487mhz, 1744qdr, 872mhz mem, 1:1, 4-4-4-12 1t. Temps get to 54 max with cpu stress tests.

Now check out these 3dmark06 results which are freaking amazing me:
Old rig: 8150 Marks
New rig (stock): 10450
New rig (oc'ed): 15160

Also score 14.6 sec 1m SuperPi times compared to my 29 sec times from my old rig.

I can't believe how much faster this chip made my rig coming from a fx-55 939. Im absolutely loving it.

Edit: BTW the chip's stepping is L647G476

Man you are wearing me out  , NO where did I compare a E6600 with a E6420. I merely stated what I have read on many forums and from my own experience (I have a E6600) the newer Conroe's don't OC' as well, especially at stock vcore (1.325) If you jack the vcore up they may or may not OC' as well. I run stock vcore and a OC' of 2.9 GHz stable on my E6600 rig because I don't want a higher cpu temp (I'm air cooled) and I need a super stable clock because I fold 24/7 with this machine (along with a E6400, a E6420, a E6300 and a PD 805, soon to be a E4300) If you don't want a E6420 after all the good reviews I really don't care I have one already. (as soon as April 22nd cuts materialize I'll probably have a quad or another E6420)

I think we're having communication issues. The point I'm trying to get across is that both the e6420 and e6600 will behave similarly depending on the week. There can be weeks better or worse than others. Intel may find a way to meet spec while saving money at the expense of scaling abilities. I'm not saying the e6420 is worse than the e6600, except for whatever binning method intel does, which up to now looks to be very loose, and not so significant. From the sounds of what you're trying to say, you're saying that e6420's are better than e6600's in clocking. And that simply isn't true. Collect a bunch of e6600's and e6420's from the same batch, and they should do similarly on average, or possibly the e6600 will edge it out by a slight bit. The issue really is just with what supplies major suppliers like newegg are shipping right now. And if it happens for example you get a l642 e6600 from newegg that won't scale well at all, and if you get a l652 e6420 from blt that does much better, you're in a sense comparing apples to oranges. Find a bunch of l652 66's and compare to a bunch of l652 6420's.

With all that said, I don't know why you get the idea that I'm putting down the e6420. I am in full support of it, and will be purchasing one soon myself.

Got mine today from BLT, made it hear before my newegg stuff ( which I'm still waiting for!).

Mine is a L645G433. I will post results this weekend.

got mine last week, paid $234 and change with 2day shipping from Erie Computer

#L644G465

but I'm getting goofy temps.. running 5-7 degrees below ambient/room temp.... bios, coretemp and speed fan all tell me the same temps

what's funny is I get the same temps with the stock cooler and my liquid cooling setup...

it's an ecs nf650i sli-t mobo, chatting with ecs about it now to try and figure it out

gah 232 with shipping..PC Nation has it for 218 with free 3day fed ex....and 10 bucks for dhl overnight...

new sig in rig... thanks for whoever linked me to the $15 off $200 and up at buy.com. i just couldn't wait for the price cut even though it was a few days away!

I really wanted an e6600, but I can't sit and wait for the price drops so I went with an e6420. I really wanted the 4mb cache since I don't upgrade very often. I just purchased from PCNation with the overnight through DHL. Hopefully all the parts of my new system will be here Monday. I'm going from an Athlon XP 2500+ to the e6420 which should be quite the performance jump.

I'll just OC the e6420 enough to get e6600 performance. I'm only looking for 2.4 GHz or so on stock cooling. Would that be a problem or should I look into a Zalman etc.?

I lapped mine last night since I am still waiting on the rest of my stuff to come in..The IHS wasnt flat at all lol.

haha yea, sure.. thats what they all say.. until they find out what their chip can do ;) :D

no need for zalman at that speed, but the results with what people are getting you know you are going to want to oc more. so go ahead and get a zalman for higher potential.

On a side note:

YAY the rest of my shit comes today! ill have a computer up by this afternoon, and post my oc results! but i only have a ultra 90 so i wouldn't expect the world or anything..

That is the same batch # I got . Fedex just dropped it off let us know it clocks ( I am still waiting for my MB)

You could hit 2.4Ghz with zero effort.

If you're looking for a mild overclock, try 8x333 = 2.66Ghz (e6700 speed) You should be able to hit that with the stock cooler & stock voltage easily.

Personally, I'd get an after market cooler and go for 8x400 = 3.2Ghz.

How does the FSB work relative to ram? Does changing the FSB of the CPU have any effect on the RAM's speed?

I'll be using 2gb of OCZ DDR2 800 (4-4-4-15).
