Kojima says PS3 superior to 360

I'm still not 100% certain but it looks more and more like MSG4 will NOT be coming to the 360:

Moving on, I remind him of a comment he made last year comparing each of the three current consoles to "different kinds of dinner". Did he still think that was the case, now that all three are on the market? Nope. "They're more like a movie theatre metaphor", he says.

"The PS3 is like the theatre, it's a little bit high-priced but it has to be high quality as well. The 360 is a DVD, it still needs to be high quality but you need more variations, while the Wii is almost like a TV channel, because every game you have it with your family"...

...Pity. So, Devil May Cry 4, going multiplatform. Thoughts? Comments? "I think it's up to each project, and the individual producer", he says. "If they want to take it multiplatform, they will". I'm going somewhere with this question, and he knows exactly where that is...

"But like I said, MGS4 is aimed for the movie theatre, it's aimed for the PS3, so the game's scenario and graphics need this theatre-type hardware. It's when a producer has a game that can work on the 'DVD level' that a game will go multiplatform", he says. Sorry kids. Your "OMGMGS4360" banners will have to come out another day.

Since we've opened up this can of worms, I may as well get his thoughts on it. Why, I ask, do you think this rumour simply refuses to go away? "Because 360 owners want it on 360, obviously", he quips.

It looks like he's saying that MGS4 just won't be possible on the 360. I suppose the DVD comparison is a good one because I have heard him complaining of not having enough space on a 25GB Blu Ray and otherwise the power of the two consoles is quite similar.

translation: "I like big, uncompressed video files on my disc because I'm lazy"

Well, uncompressed video is far too large, even for a 50GB disc. You are thinking about uncompressed audio, which does give you a nice step up from the lossy compressed stuff. Besides, so what if we do get 1080p high-bitrate MPEG4/AVC cutscenes?

That made me laugh out loud almost as much as the interview.

Its ok with me I have a PS3... soon though this thread is gonna become flame central

Why? I guess there are a few MGS fans that will be disappointed if they don't have a PS3 but it really doesn't affect me at all. There are plenty of great games coming for the 360 that will keep me busy until the time I decide to buy a PS3...and then hopefully MGS4 will be a "greatest hits" for $29.99.

So what the hell was the "different kinds of dinner" analogy?

Seriously. He lost me with that one, too.
Actually, I think most of what he said was pretty strange.
I think I might be the only person around, but I haven't played much Metal Gear since Snake's Revenge for the NES anyway.

I think it's a pretty standard marketting tactic to talk up the platform you're being released on.

If MGS4 never sees it's way to the PS3 what I want to know is how much money Sony didn't pay Konami to keep it exclusive.

Here's an analogy for you Kojima:

The PS3 is like a 600$ Bluray machine that also plays games.

The Xbox360 is like a 400$ game machine that also plays movies.

The Wii is like a 250$ Gamecube that makes you flail your arms around.

They are CONSOLES for crying out loud, not dinners, not theaters, consoles.

I don't know whether to laugh or shake my head at his comments and anology... I mean, is he talking about videogames and consoles, or what? :D

What he is intoning in a good example is with more expensive and in his opinion better hardware you get a better expirence.

For example.. when you drive to your local theater. Pay your ripoff feel of 8.50 or 10 bucks to watch a movie. Do you go to the crappy theater down the street or drive to the nicer place with DLP?

The nicer place with DLP theaters is where I choose to go because I want the best expirence. Or what I percieve as being the best expirence. This man is saying that in his position the system that will provide the best gaming expirence is the ps3 for his game.

Great that is awsome. I personally never liked the MGS series.

Yeah, who the fuck is Kojima and who the fuck cares? It's obviously going to be Sony Biased as it is Japanese based...

Come on people, you're all blowing this way out of proportion. Kojima is one of the best video game people in the industry. We hear one person say something, and we obviously has some sort of huge meaning, but at the end of the day it's just a person who's working on a game, who says the PS3 will offer more to the kind of quality he is looking for in his game.

And in the end, since PS3 is his target platform, he'll say whatever it takes to get people to buy more of the systems so he can sell more copies of the game :).

Bottom line is pretty clear: even a great developer like Kojima isn't immune from playing the politics game. Notice how he doesn't *actually* say anything is superior to the other, he just gives you some bizarre analogy.

On the topic of his analogy, it's worth noting that people buy more DVD's than they take trips to the theatres these days :)

I don't know about that. When he says, "the game's scenario and graphics need this theatre-type hardware. It's when a producer has a game that can work on the 'DVD level' that a game will go multiplatform" he is definately saying that the 360 can't handle what the PS3 can. He is saying that they are on a lower "level" than his game and that the 360 can't handle MGS4's "scenario and graphics." That looks pretty cut and dry to me.

Actually all he's referring to is the space available for his cinematics. And if he really is saying that the 360 can't handle what the ps3 can, then he must be able to transcend technical specifications, because the two systems are remarkably competive under the hood, with a graphical edge for the 360 (better GPU and ram) and a processing and storage edge for the ps3. (cell, HD, blu-ray)

Look, anyone who's played MGS knows that the man likes his big movies. The games are great cinematic pieces that rely heavily on cutscenes, and they're popular and critically acclaimed for a reason. Having 25 gigs of space to play with to make his games more movieish is his perogative. All it speaks to is which system holds more media on one disc. And great games have been on multiple disks throughout gaming history.

That interview made me chuckle. I own a PS3 and 360, so I am no !!!!!!!. It is pretty clear that he is just trying to drum up support for the system which he is releasing his game on in an effort to make more money. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, whether you agree with his comments or not.

I didn't say that, I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't doctor my posts. Anyways, I was a huge fan of MGS back when it was still good, but I've never heard of this kojima loser...

when it was still good? until when?
really weird reading you say youve never heard of kojima and calling him loser when you say you were a HUGE FAN

So basically, Kojima is pushing the PS3 version first to appease Sony since it will undoubtedly be a timed exclusive.

Someone should let Kojima in on the little "secret" that the GPU in the 360 is easily more powerful than its PS3 counterpart.

And a more powerful GPU can remedy the fact that there simply isn't enough space on the DVD-9 medium for the game that Kojima wants to make?

What?
I personally can't stand it when you people use the word "spin", but you all are really OD'ing with it.

But hey, it's just as Kojima said it...

What does that mean?

P.S. This really isn't meant to be a dig or anything. I just have no idea what it means and wish to educate myself. :)

Not that he reads this site :D

But Kojima...which is it? First you say that the 360 can run MGS4 with a few tweaks

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/676/676685p1.html

and now it can't.....

OK

I believe ya

Well of course it can. We are talking about the cut scenes which explains the why and this theatre analogy, right? Performance wise, they run neck and neck. If konami use the in-game engine for the cut scene then there wouldnt be a problem at all. And of course he must promote his game so he will say things like that to pique interest.

That's all good information to have...except uhh....what does MSG4 stand for? I'm thinking Metal Gear Solid 4....but...uhhh....right?

I thought it was Quoted For Teenage Mutant Turtles. ;) I figured it was something along those lines, but I had always seen it as QFMFT in the past, so I wasn't sure if this was some other phrase that I was unaware of.
